Is the Great Barrier Reef Worth visiting?
The Great Barrier Reef is worth visiting because it’s one of the most extraordinary natural wonders on Earth. Home to vibrant coral gardens, colourful fish, turtles, rays, and marine life that you won’t see anywhere else.
It stretches over 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast and offers endless ways to explore, whether you’re snorkelling, diving, cruising, taking a scenic flight.

- 2. If you’re all set for a long day, taking a tour to the Outer Reef Pontoon is a popular choice. It includes a semi-submarine, Underwater viewing chamber and sun deck!
- 3. If you have limited time in Airlie, book a 60-minute scenic Flight and see the Great Barrier Reef and the famous Heart Reef, from the Air.

7 Top Reef Tours from Airlie Beach?
1. Whitehaven Beach & Inner Reef Snorkelling
The Whitehaven Beach & snorkelling tours are definitely my favourite tour to see the Great Barrier Reef. This was one of my recent tours, and I was not disappointed with the organisation, the staff, and the things we went to.

Departing from Airlie Beach, you’ll climb aboard the fastest day boats in the Whitsundays for an informative and thrilling ride. With super-fast semi-rigid inflatable vessels capable of reaching speeds of up to 35 knots.

There is a choice between:
- a Northern Whitehaven tour (with two snorkelling sites)
- and the Southern Whitehaven tour (with more beach time and one snorkelling site).
Please choose the one that suits you best, but since I was also doing an outer Reef tour on another day, I chose more beach time on the Southern Whitehaven Tour.

Whitehaven Beach is worth visiting in the Whitsunday Islands, and you won’t be disappointed. The same goes for the Hill Inlet lookout points and at least getting one snorkelling site done in the inner reef.

2. Whitsundays Scenic Flight in Fixed-Winged Plane
On my last visit to Airlie, flying in a fixed-winged plane was one of the first tours on my list. Imagine the feeling of soaring through the sky above the stunning Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef.
Combine that with nothing but endless blue waters and breath-taking scenery stretching out before you as far as the eye can see.
➡ Book your Whitsundays Scenic Flight HERE with GYG.
From your comfortable seat in a fixed-wing aircraft, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Whitsunday Islands, including a bird’s-eye view of the famous Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.

But the real highlight and what makes it an Australian bucket-list adventure? A visit to Heart Reef, one of the most photographed and beloved reef locations in the entire world.
This tour is roughly 60 minutes long and perfect for those who only have one day in Airlie Beach.
But know, you’ll need extra time to check in and go through the safety briefings. I also recommend researching the best time to fly over the Whitsundays by checking out the tides and cloud cover.

3. Combo Tours with a Boat trip, Snorkelling, and Scenic Flight
What’s better than one day trip? How about a combo deal with two tours in one which ultimately, get’s you two different Great Barrier Reef experiences, while saving some money?
The beauty of these tours is you get two different aspects of the Coral Reef, from the land and the Air. What’s even better is sometimes you can organise these on the same day!

This is the same 60-minute flight mentioned above, with the added bonus of visiting Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and snorkelling the inner Great Barrier Reef. There’s no need to pick and choose where to go when you can do it all in one day.
Whitehaven Beach is famous for its white silica sand, and the Hill Inlet lookout is where you’re going to see that picture-perfect swirling sands with low tide.
Snorkelling locations are decided on the day, but the fringing reef that surrounds the islands can be brilliant for tourists. Especially when you don’t want to take the 2 to 3-hour ride into the outer Reef.

4. Outer Reef & Pontoon Experience
Take it from me that the Inner and Outer Great Barrier Reef experiences will be completely different and one you’ll have to compare yourself. The Pontoon Outer Reef Tours are generally popular with all tourists and can be a good idea if you don’t mind the extra long day!
While I like swimming through the coral Gardens on the inner Reef, the Outer Reef is deeper, and you can see larger fish, turtles, and even reef sharks.
➡ Book your Pontoon GBR experience HERE with GYG.

Even better, this tour comes complete with a purpose-built pontoon, which services the tourists and their needs. These pontoons have tables and chairs, sundecks, snorkelling and diving gear, underwater viewing chambers, and even semi-submarines.
Morning, afternoon tea, and lunch are generally included in the cost, as is using the equipment on the platform.
However, there are some downsides to the pontoon trips like, Travel time & cost and the diving experiences will come with an extra charge.

5. Sleeping experience
Do you have a couple of days free? Or you’re searching for a romantic luxury getaway with that special someone? Then, look no further than the Sleeping on the Reef option that’s available with 1 night and two full days enjoying the reef.
➡ Book your GBR Sleeping Experience HERE with GYG.
During the day, your snorkel or dive on the Outer Reef is pretty much exactly the same as above, along with the rest of the passengers being there. However, around 2 to 3 pm, the other 200 tourists leave, and you have EXCLUSIVE access to the Reef pontoon with limited staff and guests.
How good does that sound?

Hardy Reef is home to one of the most spectacular stretches of the coral ecosystem. Imagine snorkelling around this enormous area or catching the sun’s rays from the deck chairs.
The world is your oyster, and you can choose what you want to do with it.
It’s an unforgettable night under the stars on a Reef-bed atop the pontoon. So why not take a moment to sit back and enjoy the sunset, sipping on your favourite drink?
While they aren’t the most budget-friendly way to see the Great Barrier Reef, they are certainly a once-in-a-lifetime Bucket-List activity in Australia.

6. Helicopter Flight with Beach Landing
Truthfully, If I had a choice, I would always choose a helicopter Reef Tour over a fixed-wing plane. Why, you ask?
Well, Helicopters seem to have a larger degree of viewing, and you’re more likely to get a window seat. And this is something I would always check beforehand.
➡ Book the Helicopter Tour HERE with GYG.

That being said, most of the time, the helicopter flights will come with a higher price tag, and this tour is no exception.
But the higher price tag comes with a very special experience and touching down on a different area to Whitehaven beach than where the rest of the tourists are.
Granted, these flights in the Inner reef won’t see the brilliant Reef formations of the Great Barrier Reef, but it will still be an amazing experience. You’ll also fly over the famous Whitsunday Islands, like Hamilton Island and Day Dream Island.

7. Sailing Trip with an Overnight Stay.
Sailing Reef Tours are an exclusive experience and one that’s much loved by certain tourists. You’ll find they offer a more relaxed experience, lower crowds and a more romantic feel for couples
Since the Whitsunday Islands are relatively close together, slowly cruising around them for two days on a sailboat could be a perfect way to enjoy them.

With captivating snorkel excursions each day and visits to UNESCO World Heritage-listed islands, you’ll truly discover the best of this stunning destination. With Whitehaven Beach, Hook Island, Hayman Island, and Border Island on the list, you’ll find your oasis where dreams are made from.

Is one day enough for Reef?
While one day on the Great Barrier Reef is “doable”, it’s important to note that weather conditions and tour cancellations are always a possibility.
Therefore, it’s a good idea to set aside a few extra days just in case.
For me, I always like to take a variety of experiences, see the beaches, snorkelling the inner and outer reefs, or take flights. Clearly, all these things can’t be done in one day.

Based on my experience and seeing the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas, Cairns, Airlie Beach, Lady Musgrave Island, Lady Elliot Island, and Great Keppel Island. Not one location stands out from the rest, and all have brought me a new and slightly different encounter.
If snorkelling is high on you list, I can help you find the best Great Barrier Reef snorkelling spot for YOU. But this post rounds down your options in the whole of Queensland, as opposed to just “Airlie Beach”!

Resources to Plan your Airlie Holiday?
Airlie Beach has always been worth visiting for the Whitsunday Islands. With so many tour options available, it can be challenging to know where to start. But, here are some tips and other resources to help you plan:
- Airlie Beach has a range of accommodation from budget hostels to luxury apartments and there are plenty of great places to stay in and around town.
- If you have enough time, a 5-day itinerary in Airlie might include snorkelling choices above for the Great Barrier Reef, a day trip to Hamilton Island, and wandering the inner city attractions.
- I have a great article comparing a holiday between Cairns to Airlie Beach? Both offer access to the reef, but Airlie Beach boasts a small town feel and more relaxed.
- Getting to Airlie Beach is relatively straightforward by either road tripping the coast, or flying into Proserpine Airport to catch a shuttle/or rent a car.

- Once in Airlie, getting around town can be done on foot, or with local Public transport for the budget-conscious. Car rentals are available if you’re keen to explore nearby towns like Bowen or Proserpine.
- The best time to visit is between May and October, when the weather is dry and sunny. Just be mindful of jellyfish season, which runs from November to May and know that stinger suits are recommended for swimming during this time.
- Whether you prefer Airlie Beach or are comparing it to Hamilton Island, both are located in the heart of the Whitsundays, but a very different holiday experience.
