Just like any famous tourist hub, Airlie Beach can be packed with endless fun and adventure, and it can often take days (or up to a week) to see most of the cool stuff! So, if you only had one day in Airlie Beach, how would you make the most out of it?

As a Queensland local, I’ve walked on the white sandy shores and swam in the clear waters plenty of times.

Therefore, today, I’m going to detail my favourite choices and help you prioritize what’s important enough to add to your days itinerary!

How to Spend One Day in Airlie Beach & the Whitsundays

Truthfully, in order to see the best of what the Whitsunday area has to offer, I think a five-day itinerary would be ideal. But, not all of us have that luxury, so I still have some brilliant opportunities below.

This way you can pick and choose what you want to do and how long you spend doing it!

⏱️ Short on Time?

I don’t think any Whitsundays vacation is complete without a trip to Airlie Beach. But since we only have a single day, I definitely recommend hanging around the town district.

I have many attractions mentioned below that you can pick from, but here is my suggested itinerary on spending 24 hours in Airlie Beach.

  • 🏨Where to Stay: Airlie Beach Hotel for a central and convenient location.
  • 🚗Transport: Renting a car is easier to get around, but staying in town will allow you to walk the streets.

If this has you intrigued, then please read on for more detailed information and plenty more attractions to see.

My Detailed Itinerary Suggestions!

1. Dip into the Airlie Beach Lagoon

In case you didn’t know, the surrounding beaches in this coastal town are not ideal for swimming due to the risks throughout the stinger season. But, this is why the Airlie Beach lagoon was built and is available for cooling down in the sweltering summer heat.

The best news is it’s free for all visitors and open every day from 5:30 am to 7:00 pm (9pm in the summer), so you can easily squeeze it into your one-day!

Additionally, it’s a very family-friendly spot with shallow wading areas, a kids splash section and a lifeguard on duty. Plus, it’s located directly in front of Airlie Bay, giving swimmers a view of the Bay.

Places like the Airlie Lagoon are easy walking distance from town

2. Hike to the Honeyeater Lookout

If you want to get yourself moving and reward yourself with one of the highest lookouts, then find your way around the town of Airlie to the Honeyeater hiking trail.

It leads you to a high point in the Conway National Park, where you can get an expansive view of Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, and the Coral Sea Marina.

The hike begins at Kara Crescent (not far from town) and takes about 2 to 3 hours (7.5 km), depending on your pace. While the lookout point is a must-see destination, I would not recommend it for people with physical limitations. This is due to the steep trail on the way up!

Tip: Wear comfortable and sturdy closed shoes, as some parts of the trail have loose gravel and can be slippery in the wet.

The Honeyeater trail is easy but steep

3. Visit the Whitehaven Beach & Hill Inlet

As mentioned before, boat trips to the Islands will take a massive chunk out of your day. So, if I were to choose any, Whitehaven Beach would be my first choice, including the swirling sands view from Hill Inlet.

Did you know that Whitehaven is one of the best beaches in the world?

With its turquoise waters and fine white sand, you’d be utterly amazed at how beautiful this place is. And oh! Don’t forget to rub its 98% pure silica sand on your skin for a free exfoliating spa treatment!

Therefore, if you don’t mind taking up most of your day with this option and you’re itching to dive into the clear, blue waters. This is just a boat ride from the marina, and lucky that most of these tours include some inner reef snorkelling.

4. See the Cedar Creek Falls

Just a 20 to 30-minute drive inland from the Airlie Beach, you can enjoy the lovely Cedar Creek Falls in the Conway National Park.

This is a lovely destination if you’re looking for another free swimming spot near the town. But, you’ll either need your own car transport or join a guided tour to reach this hidden gem.

Surprisingly, you can visit the falls year-round, but it’s not always as impressive, and I recommend you go during summer (from December to March). This is when it’s at its fullest, and you can make the most of your day by dipping into its refreshing swimming hole.

5. Get an Aerial view over the Great Barrier Reef

Don’t have time for a day trip to the reef? Then, find the best time for scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef.

Most are only a 60-minute flight, and Matt and I found it to be an absolute highlight and one of the quickest ways to see the reef.

During this time, you can take an aerial glimpse of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.

Honestly, the shapes and design of the coral are so much different from above. Along with seeing the famous Heart Reef, the swirling sands of Hill Inlet, and the pristine shore of Whitehaven Beach.

This is a bucket list activity, perfect for couples or small groups of friends who want to experience a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

6. Visit the Whitsunday Coffee Plantation.

If you want something different, then I suggest visiting the Whitsunday Gold Coffee Plantation in one of the nearby towns to Airlie Beach. Whether you’re a coffee lover or not, stopping by is a great way to take some time off and relax, have some lunch, or tour the coffee plantation.

The café is open year-round and offers several home-grown coffee blends and tasty meals. However, if you want to tour their coffee plantation and learn how to grow and harvest coffee beans, you should visit between July and August.

Fun fact: There are lots of native and exotic animals around the café, creating a healing and relaxing atmosphere!

7. Explore on a Jet Ski Tour.

Have you ever ridden a jet ski? If not, you’re definitely missing out on some adrenaline-pumping fun!

Surprisingly, Matt and I have done this a few times over the years (not only in Airlie), so as much as it’s a thrilling water ride, it won’t take a huge chunk of time out of your day.

➡  Book your Jet Ski Tour HERE with GYG.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but there’s something liberating about feeling the wind blowing on my face while we’re in the middle of the ocean waters. Plus, you can’t get the smile off my face!

If you’re not confident driving the jet ski yourself, it’s totally okay, the guides are there to help you. And what’s even better is that a license is NOT required.

8. Explore the Bicentennial Coastal Walking Trail.

If you’re looking for a low-energy and family-friendly activity, you can take a brisk walk along the Bicentennial Walking Trail. This 4-kilometre trail stretches from the town centre to the suburb of Cannonvale and offers marvellous scenery and plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

Unlike the Honeyeater Lookout Trail, this gorgeous coastal boardwalk is relatively easy to navigate (and, most of all, relatively flat). So, if you have some time to fill in, it could be an ideal option to take a casual stroll or a quick jog on this trail.

9. Spend an evening on a Sunset Sailing tour

What’s a better way to end your day than with a romantic sunset sailing? At least, I think it’s a gorgeous and relaxing way to enjoy a holiday!

Nothing beats the serenity while sipping a nice wine or Aperol Spritz and snacking on a small plate of local flavours. All while watching a beautiful sunset!

➡  Compare prices for Sunset Sailing HERE with GYG.

For roughly two hours, you’d get to spend your evening sailing in the Airlie Beach Bay and watching the sun dip behind the horizon. Along with listening to the flapping of the sails, the wind in your hair and laughter from the passengers. And if you’re lucky, you might also take turns driving the boat.

I highly recommend this laid-back activity to people who want to get a beautiful view of Airlie Beach for one last time before they leave.

10. Stroll along the Coral Beach Walking Trail

The Coral Beach Walking Trail starts between Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. Unlike the Bicentennial Walking Trail, this requires walking in the forest, making it a bit more adventurous.

But, once you reach the other end of the trail, you’ll be greeted by the pristine shores of a beach made from coral.

The trail to the beach is only One kilometre, but you can take an extra 600 metres uphill to the Beak Lookout for that extra thrill and views of the Whitsunday Islands. Compared to Honeyeater, this short hiking trail suits most fitness levels, but you must take more care in the Beak Lookout section.

Note: We still walked this section in our thongs!

11. Have a drink at Magnums.

If you want to experience some of the nightlife in Airlie Beach or just have an afternoon refreshment. Then check out the Magnums establishment, or “Maggies,” as the locals call it.

Thanks to its cheap drinks and nightly live music, it’s one of the most popular bars & nightclubs in that town. And I’ve even stayed in the backpacker hostel out the back, which is one of the cheapest places to stay in Airlie.

Magnums is located along Main Street, with an al fresco seating plan, big screen TV for sports, pool tables and a stage for live music or entertainment. And if you’d like to take it further, head down to its underground nightclub, where you can dance to the music and meet locals.

12. Grab a meal at one of the Cafes

While Airlie Beach is only a small town, it does have an impressive array of restaurants and cafes to choose from.

We spent most of our time around the Airlie Esplanade, but there are a few options on Main Street and the surrounding areas.

Some cafés near the town centre that I would recommend are the Sidewalk Café, Airlie beach Hotel, Whitsunday Seafood Bar, Wisdom Café next to the lagoon, and the Garuma Café along the Main Street-Shute Harbour Road.

13. Walk the streets for shopping.

You don’t want to leave Airlie Beach without buying something to take home with you.

While I have a preference for the magnets, you’ll be surprised to find a lot of locally made gifts and crafts that you won’t find anywhere else with travelling the Queensland coast

Since it’s one of the major tourist hubs in Queensland, you can just walk a few blocks to pick between your shopping preferences. This includes souvenirs, take-home treats, photo prints, clothes, paintings, statues, or groceries.

14. Go for an exciting Reef World Pontoon Adventure.

While I think the Outer Reef Pontoon experience it too far away, I still want to give it as an option to get to the Great Barrier Reef.

Just know this specific tour run from 8am to 6pm and won’t leave any time for other activities on your day in Airlie.

➡  Book your Pontoon experience HERE with GYG.

I have done this trip from Airlie a few times, and while it can be a good tour, there are downsides that make it my least favourite tour. The conditions need to be good to fully enjoy it (Ensure you check the weather). Plus, the trip out takes anything between 5 to 6 hours to return, which means only 4 hours on the pontoon.

Despite that, It’s non-swimmers, and seniors who would love to see the reef up close, even WITHOUT getting into the water. This is due to the underwater observatory, the semi-submarine and time to laze around on the stable deck.

Apart from that, the reef area is deeper for scuba diving and you’ll see larger fish here, compared to the inner reef.

Where to stay?

This small coastal town is a popular destination for backpackers. So, finding budget-friendly accommodation at Airlie Beach, even inside the town centre, may be quite challenging but not impossible.

Two places that I can recommend are Nomads Airlie Beach Hostel and Magnums Hotel, perfect for travellers who want to experience the town’s nightlife.

However, if you want a cosy and luxurious place to stay, check out the beach-front private villas and high-end resorts. This is perfect for travellers looking for quieter, more relaxing facilities and great amenities like private swimming pools overlooking the sea.

We stayed in several affordable and high-end accommodations during our visits, including Magnum’s Backpackers and Martinique. Although there is a significant difference in their prices, I would say that my stay in both places is worth it. Therefore, pick one that is most suitable to your budget, preferences, and convenience.

How to get there & Around?

There are several ways to get to Airlie Beach, either by plane, bus, train, or car. It all comes down to your budget, availability, and preference.

  • By plane:  You can catch a direct or connecting flight to Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast Airport). From there, it only takes a 30-minute drive to reach Airlie Beach.
  • By bus: Take a Greyhound bus from anywhere along the Queensland Coastal Network. Then, get off the designated bus stop at The Cove Road, next to the Boat Haven.
  • By train: Alight the “Spirit of Queensland” train. Then, get off at the Proserpine Railway Station at Hinschen Street. This station is 14.3 kilometres north of the Proserpine Airport and a 23-minute journey to Airlie Beach.
  • By car: If you love road trip adventures, go for a fun ride! This would give you complete freedom to travel anywhere at your own pace. Matt and I took a fun, long road trip from Brisbane to Airlie Beach for 10 days!
Beach views from other areas near Airlie Beach in Queensland

Airlie Beach is a pretty small town, so getting around Airlie isn’t that difficult compared to other similar towns. Moreover, most of the shops, cafés, and restaurants are along or near Main Street. This means you can tour the town or run errands just walking a few blocks.

However, if you want to get to places faster and conveniently, driving a car is the best option. You can either bring your own or rent one in the town. I highly recommend this, especially if you want to explore the towns near Airlie Beach. Getting a taxi or Uber can also be an option, but it isn’t cost-effective.

Other options are to ride a public bus or train that operates around Airlie daily, perfect for those who want to save costs and don’t mind transferring rides. Additionally, shuttle buses to and from the airport and service ferries to the islands are available throughout the day.

Tip: If you want to save costs by commuting within Airlie, choose an accommodation near a bus or train stop.

Would more days be better?

Airlie Beach is a pretty small town, so a day trip would be enough to visit the most popular attractions. However, if you want to fully experience the town in a much deeper sense, I recommend staying for about 5 days at Airlie.

If you want to experience Airlie Beach as a local, spend your first few days in the town centre. Shop at weekly markets, drink at a local bar, eat breakfast at a local café, and spend a leisurely afternoon in the lagoon. Then, spend the rest of your trip snorkelling at nearby islands, hiking the Honeyeater Trail, and swimming at the base of Cedar Creek Falls.

Best Time to visit?

Airlie Beach has a warm tropical climate, making it a perfect year-round beach destination. Although that’s the case, there are certain months of the year that are more ideal for doing specific activities. So, to determine when you should visit Airlie Beach, you must first identify what type of activities you would like to do.

Graph Data on Month to Month Average Temperatures & Rainfall in Airlie Beach, Queensland

I recommend visiting Airlie Beach in September and November or March and May when the temperature is around 25 to 29°C. During these months, there is less rainfall, tinner crowds, and more affordable accommodations, perfect for lazy beach days, scenic walks, and hiking.

The short walking track opens up to a beach made from Coral

However, if you enjoy snorkelling in warmer waters and seeing the waterfall to its fullest, summertime (December to March) is the optimal time to visit. Just keep in mind that this is the peak season of stingers, and the town also receives more rainfall during this time. And if you decide to visit during winter, bring a light jacket as some nights get slightly cold (as low as 10°C).
