My Overall Review on the Carnival Encounter Cruise

Overall, I think the Carnival Encounter Cruise can be a great all-inclusive holiday. The food and activities are sufficient and it’s nice knowing you don’t have constantly pack for each new destination. Plus, the Adults only bar & pool area was a big draw-card for me and found it more relaxing and enjoyable.

Obviously, we both had a blast and we would definitely book another one.

With that said, there seems to be more and more addon’s in todays cruises, that hike up the price. This includes the drinks, Wi-Fi, food, Port Tours and onboard activities. Even something as small as the Lanyard not being included anymore, was a bit disappointing, and it’s definitely more convenient and handy using one.

Matt watching the sunset on our cruise

If crowds are not your thing, then it’s probably not going to suit you. The Hots Tubs and Spas were all located in public areas and FULL every time I passed by, so I couldn’t enjoy them.

They also need some work on their App with message notifications and having it disconnect all the time (more on that below). But, with the knowledge I have now, I can plan around the things I didn’t like, which reading below, will help you plan and make the most of your trip.

Quieter Bar Areas of the cruise ship

The Encounter is designed to combine value, fun, and comfort, making it popular with families, couples, and first-time cruisers. From live entertainment and endless dining options to kids’ clubs and adult-only retreats.

But, like any holiday option, there are pros and cons to consider before booking. So, I have a quick reference table below to help you sort through these.

Where does the Carnival Encounter Sail? (With Map)!

If you’re considering booking a Carnival Encounter cruise, one of the first things to know is where the ship actually goes.

Departing from Brisbane, the Encounter sails to a mix of destinations including the Great Barrier Reef with Cairns and Airlie Beach/Whitsundays, South Pacific Islands like Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Fiji, and even longer voyages to Indonesia, Singapore, and Papua New Guinea.

They even host specialty Theme Cruises for Comedy, Country Music and the Best of the 80’s and 90’s.

These can range from 3 to 15 days, with the theme cruises doing a round trip back and forth from Brisbane.

To help you visualise the journey, I’ve included an interactive map of the Carnival Encounter cruise routes, so you can see at a glance which itinerary best suits your travel style.

34 Tips & Things to know BEFORE Cruising with Carnival Encounter

If you’re wondering what the Carnival Encounter is like onboard, here’s a quick breakdown below of its key specifications and features. From size and passenger capacity to dining, entertainment, and relaxation options, these details give you a clear picture of what to expect before you step onboard.

➡ Booking Cruise, Weather, Cabins, Power Boards, Drinks

1. Remember to Book Early

As for my first tip or things to know – You can choose to book really early for some great deals and prices. Cruise lines, including P&O & Carnival, reward early planners with competitive prices, onboard credit, free upgrades, or other exclusive bonuses.

By booking early, you’ll also have access to a wider selection of cabins. We booked a Balcony cabin on this trip and had our pick of floors and areas on the boat. And this was about 7 to 8 months before it left.

Specialty Shops on the Cruise Ship

Brands often runs special promotions such as discounted fares for early birds, including family packages or “kids sail free” deals. Subscribing to the cruise line’s newsletter or following them on social media can help you stay updated on offers.

It only cost us $100 per person to secure our cruise for 4 nights or less, or its $250 for  5 to 11 nights. And there is no need to pay the rest until 90 days before your cruise leaves.

We also snagged a special to get us extra Onboard Credit, which we used for drinks on our first day! Obviously, there are also last minute deals to help fill up the ship, but the downsides to this are being booked out and missing out altogether.

2. Check the Weather patterns:

The tropical climate the Carnival Encounter Ship means two distinct seasons:

  • the dry season (April to October)
  • and the wet season (November to March).

The dry season is ideal, offering sunny skies, calm seas, and cooler temperatures and tends to be more visibility in the water for snorkelling the Great Barrier reef areas.

Graph Data on Month to Month Average Temperatures & Rainfall in Airlie Beach, Queensland

Plus anywhere you go including Airlie Beach and Cairns is warm enough to swim anyway, it’s just the nights get a little cooler and you might need to take some clothing layers for warmth.

Lift areas inside the cruise Ship

If anything, Jellyfish and Stingers are more common in the Summertime, so Cairns and Airlie are best to visit during the winter to avoid most of it.

Cyclone season peaks between December and March, which can lead to rough seas, itinerary changes, and less pleasant weather. But this is also the low season for cruising and could be cheaper cruises, so please weigh up the pros and cons and find out what’s good for you.

We actually booked for November and what we got was next to “Perfect”. The skies were clear and I couldn’t believe how calm the seas were. Also, taking a cruise, out of school holidays is better to avoid crowds.

3. Choosing the Right Cabin:

Your cabin is always going to be on the smaller side and look much bigger in the online photos than what they are in real life. However they have everything you need.

The beds and pillows are really soft, room to put your luggage away and you able to set some toiletries out on the sink.

I think the balcony rooms are a great investment. As much as you can watch the sunrise or sunset from your room, they allow you to get some fresh air between the constant air-conditioning.

Balcony Room looking outside to the ocean

On the downside, know that the Balcony rooms can act as a wind tunnel with your Cabin door and the Sliding Balcony door. So, you should be very careful and only using one at a time.

  • We stayed on Deck 10 which had a balcony with half in sun and half shade.
  • Deck 11 and above had all shade
  • and Deck 9 had full sun ,
  • Deck 8 and below were all the shade.
Enjoying a sunrise from the Balcony Room

You need to consider your cabin location, too. If you’re prone to seasickness, choose a cabin midship and on lower decks, as these areas experience less motion.

For light sleepers, avoid rooms near elevators, stairwells, or noisy areas like clubs and restaurants.

If you’re someone who doesn’t mind a cosy space and plans to spend most of your time exploring the ship or onshore, an Interior Cabin might suit your budget. However, these rooms lack windows, which can feel cramped or disorienting for some.

For those seeking a luxury experience or planning to relax more, Suites offer the most space, or access the private Byron Bay Club area, with added perks,

Finally, check for additional amenities offered by certain cabins, like connecting rooms for families, or accessible features for those with mobility needs. In the end, access the Deck plan and help round down your options.

4. Surge Protected Power boards

Cruise ship cabins often have limited power outlets, which can be challenging when charging multiple devices like phones, cameras, tablets, or laptops.

Having a power board is especially useful, but before packing, ensure your power board complies with Carnival policies. Most cruise lines allow them, but prohibit those with surge protection due to fire safety regulations.

Additionally, ensure any electrical equipment you want to bring with you is in a safe working condition, or it could be denied and confiscated until your return.

Interior room set up

5. Should you get a Drinks Package?

Drinks can be a significant expense for many passenger and Carnival offers drink packages for soda, alcohol, and specialty coffees.

Purchasing these in advance can save you 10 to 15% off if you plan to enjoy beverages regularly. Which can be booked up to a week out through the Cruise Platform

Although, If you don’t drink much, opting to pay as you go might be more economical.

Purchase brewed coffee from the cafe

However, know the packages have limits? Alcohol is capped at 15 drinks per day, per person and you can only buy 1 drink every 15 minutes

Also keep in mind that Higher Cost Cocktails may not be included in the Drinks package and instead of charging the difference to their limit, you’ll be charged the whole lot. Additionally, Non-Alcoholic Beers may not be included in the Soft drinks Package

I found the cocktails a nice change if you don’t have them too much and so many different flavours around the ship, but they range in price from $17 to 22 each. You can get Beers in Schooners and Pints and all your main spirts are available too.

➡ Wi-Fi, What’s Included, Insurance, Packing, Seasickness

6. Do you need the Wi-Fi Package

Wi-Fi is an often-overlooked expense and The Encounter Cruise offers daily internet packages, but they can be costly and range from $16 to $25 Australian Dollars per day.

Please also factor in that if you’re on a 4 day cruise, you’ll be purchasing the Package for the whole 4 days, which is close to $100. There isn’t an option for half the time, or one day out of that period.

Also, The Internet only works in Flight Mode and doesn’t allow you to share it with others by Hot spotting. Our Passwords were also given as QR codes and harder to swap devices.

Central Seating area

Decide whether you need constant connectivity or there is always the option to use Data service on your Port Days ashore the local mainland cruises. There is also the Chat sections on the App to stay connected with other passengers, which you can use for free.

Without the Internet, Just make sure you use Flight Mode, Or turn your Data off. Even if you’re not leaving the country, your data service can connect to the ships satellite and you can still be charged for international Roaming for the service.

7. What is Included on the Cruise?

Cruises are generally inclusive, covering accommodation, main dining meals, onboard entertainment, and many activities. However, There was a lot more additional expenses on this cruise, in comparison to the last one I did 10 years ago.

So, understanding what’s included in your fare is crucial to planning your budget and avoiding unexpected costs.

The Waterfront Restaurant

Meals at the buffet and main dining rooms are part of your fare, but even inclusive restaurants, like Angelo’s (Italian food). Dragon Lady (Asian fusion), or the Waterfront restaurant had separate items on their menu, that were for an extra charge.

Water, tea, and basic coffee are usually complimentary, and you have access to them all day in the Buffet Pantry Section.

Also, some premium experiences, like spa treatments or fitness classes, The Blanc to Blanc Stage Show cost extra. Along with Certain workshops, like wine tastings or cooking classes, may also have fees.

The Blues Bar Seating Area

8. Is Travel Insurance Essential:

Travel insurance is non-negotiable for a cruise, including the ones exploring the Queensland coast. While you may think it’s an unnecessary expense, unforeseen events like medical emergencies, cancellations, or missed ports can lead to substantial costs without coverage.

Cruise ships have onboard medical facilities, but these services are private and can be expensive. Plus, even if you’re not travelling overseas, Medical expenses are NOT covered by the Australian Medicare or your Australia Private Health Fund.

Travel insurance often covers medical treatments and emergency evacuations, delays and cancellations can also disrupt your trip. If you miss embarkation due to a flight delay or illness, travel insurance can cover rebooking costs or other expenses to help you join the cruise at the next port.

Shore excursions present additional risks, from injuries during activities to cancellations caused by weather. When purchasing insurance, see that it covers all cruise-specific scenarios. Als, verify that the policy includes coverage for water-based activities like snorkelling or diving, which are popular in Queensland destinations like the Great Barrier Reef.

9. Packing Tips

Packing for the Encounter Cruise requires preparation for warm, humid climate and the activities you’ll be enjoying.

There are definitely people that go way out for matching costumes, and I saw Hawaiian style shirts everywhere! Along with monogrammed prints depending what the group is there for.

In the end, Pack for Tropics! This means Lightweight, breathable clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen are must-haves for warm climate. Think casual shorts, tank tops, sundresses, and T-shirts for daytime comfort.

Fish & Chips meal at the waterfront Restaurant

A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a lightweight scarf or sarong could be a nice idea or I have a Swimmers over-shirt I picked up on one of my trips to Thailand.

Pack sturdy sandals for exploring, water shoes for beach or reef activities, and dressier shoes for onboard dinners or formal nights. Comfortable footwear is essential and since I didn’t leave the boat on this trip, I wore my thongs the entire time.

A reusable water bottle is also a must to stay hydrated during the trip or on excursions. But please make sure this is empty when going through the Security checking in. Just like the Airports, there are restrictions and you’ll be asked to empty it.

A light rain jacket or travel umbrella is helpful for unexpected tropical showers, which can occur even during the dry season.

In the evenings, sea breezes can feel cool, so consider a light jacket or wrap for added comfort. Plus, pack a small day bag for shore excursions, consider waterproof phone cases for snorkelling, and insect repellent for mosquito-prone areas.

10. Do you need Seasickness Remedies:

Even seasoned cruisers can feel queasy and It’s one aspect I have to consider every time. Just know that once you’re sick, it’s going to make you ill for a long time, so prevention is always better.

This particular cruise for us was relatively flat and waveless, but I actually started my medications the night before, took them on the first day and I was fine after that with no symptoms.

Obviously, the weather on your cruise could be a lot different. So, There are options like wristbands, Teas or ginger candies, which are known for their anti-nausea properties.

Or, we’ve often purchased over-the-counter medications, but please chat to you pharmacist for the options that are available to you.

As mentioned before, choosing a cabin midship and on a lower deck, where there’s less movement can also help, along with Balconies for fresh air. Plus, spending time on open decks up the top and focus on the horizon, & avoiding heavy meals will help your brain adjust to the ship’s motion.

Pool Bar

➡ Snorkelling, Theme Nights, Loyalty Program, Dining

11. Should you bring Snorkelling Gear:

While most excursions provide snorkelling gear, bringing your own equipment has several advantages. Rental masks and fins can sometimes be uncomfortable or poorly maintained, which may detract from your experience.

Especially when they flood water into your face all the time.

We’ve often travelled with our own gear, especially when we dive. This provides a watertight seal and clear vision underwater. I would also recommend a rash shirt or UV-protective swim shirt, to shield your skin from the sun and jellyfish stings without needing excessive sunscreen.

If you’re visiting during Queensland’s stinger season (typically November to May), You’ll more than likely have stinger suits included and will be required for most of the swimming activities.

Also, a small underwater camera or GoPro is a fantastic addition to capture the beauty of the reef to share with people back home.

12. Formal and Theme Nights:

All cruises are known for their fun theme nights and occasional formal evenings, making them a fantastic opportunity to dress up and immerse yourself in the cruise culture.

Theme nights are announced ahead of time, with popular choices on the Encounter are like the Gatsby Night, Formal Night, the White Party, or Tropical Night.

While dressing up is optional, participating enhances your experience and makes for great photo opportunities. If costumes aren’t your thing, even small touches like a themed accessory or colour-coordinated outfit can help you blend in.

In the end, I found it about 50/50 for those dressed up, to those who didn’t!

13. Take Advantage of Loyalty Programs

Like most travel Brands, Cruise loyalty program can offer Discounts, Priority boarding and exclusive perks for repeat travellers. So, If you plan to sail with them more than once, enrolling in their program could help.

To maximize your benefits, familiarize yourself with the program’s details. For example, booking early or during promotional periods often earns additional rewards. Look for cruises offering bonus points or discounts for loyalty members.

During your cruise, take advantage of loyalty benefits like special cocktail parties or exclusive discounts. By leveraging loyalty rewards, you’ll save money and enhance your overall experience on future cruises, making each voyage even more enjoyable.

The Pantry Buffet salad Section

14. Do you need to Book Dining options?

Booking my dining choices is one thing where I failed! Breakfast and lunch doesn’t need to be booked, but Dinner does. I booked all our Dinners on the first day for the entire trip, but still had to wait until 730 to 8pm to get a table at the Free Restaurants.

Not sure if this is easier at the paid restaurants like Luke’s Bar & Grill, the Pizzeria, Charlie’s Bar, so just get in early to make sure. I recommend looking into all of this before the day, through the Cruise check in Platform,

However, This does get marginally harder when you have a group of people travelling, that aren’t staying in the same room, and you have to find someone at guest services for that.

The Dragon Lady Restaurant

➡ Excursions, Arrival Day, Check-in & Security Process

15. Budget for Shore Deals

While the Cruise itself might seem like a cheap holiday, it’s the shore excursions that sting a bit with prices and you need to budget for the port days.

Know that the price for these shores excursions are always MUCH dearer than booking them yourself. On the Other hand, you want to guarantee to get on the tour or arrive back on time, so sometimes it can be better to book with the Cruise Line – Especially if it’s a full day tour.

Strolling the Marina shores of Airlie beach

Another point is, high-demand activities like snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef or scenic flights over the Reef can fill up quickly and it could be handy to book these before you leave.

After seeing the extra-long lines at the service desk, you might not want to battle through that for on your first day.

With that said, If it’s a short tour and you can be flexible, then you can look into options yourself either on the day, or checking with the company direct beforehand.

Also to suss out some contingency plans, when the weather cancels the shore excursions and you still need something to do.

Walking the outside deck of the Encounter Ship

16. Do you need to Arrive the Day before?

Arriving early for embarkation ensures a stress-free start to your cruise and allows for unexpected delays and gives you more time to settle in. This includes if you’re driving or flying!

If you’re flying, consider arriving in Brisbane the day before to avoid last-minute rushes or delays. Stay in a hotel close to the Airport & the Cruise Terminal, giving you extra time to relax and explore the city before boarding.

Novotel Airport Hotel near the Brisbane Airport

17. Online Check in & Luggage Tags

The check-in process for the Encounter Cruise is designed to be smooth and efficient. While you can do this on the Day, there is a benefit to processing some of it through the Cruise platform earlier.

This includes choosing an early check-in time, downloading Luggage Tags, submitting dietary requirements and uploading your cruise card photo.

This all makes the Terminal Check-in process shorter and easier for everyone. You also get more time on the ship before the crowds get in.

Brisbane Cruise Terminal

Although if you don’t have a printer for your luggage tags, there is a stand outside the terminal that can print these for you and staple to your bag. Luggage tags are uniform and ensure the cruise staff have your bags delivered to your room correctly.

Upon arrival at the port, you will see clearly marked areas directing you where to drop off your luggage. Hand them over and be on your way.

Honestly, I think there was only 1 hour from the time we left them, to seeing them in your room, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long. I guess during this time is where they will be scanning your bags and ensure you’re not bringing any items not allowed, like Alcohol.

Attach Luggage Tags and Hand over Bags at the Brisbane Cruise Terminal

18. The Security & Check-in Process

Next, you will proceed to the passenger terminal, where you will be greeted by friendly staff who will guide you through the various stages of check-in.

You’ll approach the security screening area, which is similar to airport security. Here, your carry-on bags will be scanned, and you will pass through a metal detector.

This is also the point where you can’t bring water any further.

Once through security, you will make your way to the check-in counters. At these counters, you will need to present your travel documents, ID and cruise ticket, as well as your health declaration form.

The staff will verify your details and provide you with your cruise card, which serves as your room key, identification, and your payment method while on board.

Check-in Process at the Brisbane Cruise Terminal

Although please note that the Lanyards don’t come with anymore, so remember to bring one with you from home, use it without, or you can purchase one in board.

If you’re travelling overseas, this is also when you’ll pass through immigration.

After all that, you will walk through the terminal towards the embarkation area and gangway onto the ship. Along the way, there may be opportunities to take a welcome photo, which can be a fun souvenir from your trip.

After a quick scan at your muster station, to allocate that you got on board, you can find your room or move about the ship.

Your bags will be placed outside your room, so if you’re anything like me, I like to wait for these before wandering around.

➡ Planning, Sailaway Party, Ship Layout, Restaurants

19. Understand the Itinerary & Plan your days:

The Cruise ships offer a variety of onboard activities designed to cater to every interest. I recommend planning your activities on your first day when you have access to the App or you can read the Daily News Magazine.

This includes onboard entertainment like, comedy acts, dance classes, live music, and trivia games, poolside games and fitness classes. Plus, we had heaps of fun participating in the 80’s music Trivia at the Encounter Bar.

For adventure seekers, The cruise may feature fun activities like waterslides, zip lines, cocktail making or wine tastings (for an extra charge). Although, we also saw at least three people get stuck on the zipline in a matter of 15 minutes.

Zipline across the top of the Carnival Ship

Evenings are a highlight with high-energy stage productions like Blanc to Blanc, themed parties, and live singers.

We actually attended the Blanc to Blanc show. It’s 18+ and while it was entertaining, it was arranged as part comedy routine, part dancing, artistic acrobatics and nudity.

However, I wasn’t a big fan on the seating arrangement in the Black Circus auditorium. The flooring only had a slight incline to the stage, and there were alternative seating arranged higher than the one behind and made it very difficult to see the show.

So unless you’re willing to pay over $100 to see it, your view could be restricted

Blanc to Blanc Show seating

For families, Kids’ Clubs are a fantastic resource, offering supervised activities for children of all ages. This allows parents some free time to enjoy the adults-only areas or indulge in spa treatments.

To be honest, I saw less on-board activities available on the Port Days, so if you go ashore, don’t feel like you’re going to miss out.

20. Sail away party

One of the first places I recommend you go on the first day, is the “Sailaway Partywhich starts close to departure time. Obviously, this is the music and entertainment as you see the ship start to move away from the Harbour.

This all started on deck 14, but could be seen from deck 15 and some of 16. There were several staff positioned around the main pool to rev up the crowd, get everyone dancing and giving away some prizes.

You will definitely need a hat up here (and some sunscreen) as there is very little shade. Also plenty of people around, and seats are a lot harder to find. The crowds also make it harder to drink, without lining up for more than 15 minutes.

Despite that, everyone seems to have fun with a DJ playing songs like the nut bush, YMCA, macarena, and a staff member narrating the whole time. Plus, you can watch all the highlights on the big TV screen.

Sailaway Party on the top deck of the Carnival Encounter

21. Understand Ship Layout

Familiarizing yourself with the ship’s layout early on can save you time and reduce confusion during your cruise. The Cruise ships are large, and knowing where key areas are, helps you navigate with ease.

This can all be done using the Cruise App or downloading the map online.

Locate essentials such as the main dining room, speciality restaurants, buffet, entertainment spaces, kids’ club, gym, spa, and guest services desk and especially where your cabin is. T

his is also a great opportunity to discover quiet corners, like outdoor decks or lounges, for relaxation.

Guest Services & reception area

22. What are the “Included Restaurants”?

As for reviewing and telling you about the Free Restaurant Options, I thought they were all very accommodating to specialty Dietary Requirements

The pantry area is your buffet style meals and lots of variety. There are different sections allocated like fish and chips, carvery or roast meat, dessert bar, self serve salad section and a water station.

Food as such was good, but I do think of it as mass produced, takeaway style. However, there were certain food like the roast meat I enjoyed more than other areas.

I loved the “Waterfront Restaurant” and the personalised waiter and table service was definitely better than the pantry. Meals were quickly served and lacked quality on certain items.

Big Breakfast meal at the Waterfront Restaurant

Angelo’s” is the Italian restaurant and one of the free options available. However, like most of the menus, keep an eye on the “treat yourself” options as these cost extra.

Service was exceptional and meal’s came out quickly. But also like fast-food served with style. Matt tried the bruschetta, chicken parmigiana and the flour-less chocolate cake. I tried the seafood chopping which was a variety of seafood like mussels, fish, calamari etc on a tomato base sauce.

The Pantry Buffet on encounter Cruise

The Dragon lady” Asian cuisine was definitely my favourite, but I guess that comes down to always being a common choice at home. The Dim Sims and Spring rolls were a nice entrée and the calamari and stir-fry’s were lovely.

In the end, The Menu’s at each restaurant can slightly change throughout your journey, so always visit a couple of times if you don’t find options you like.

Dim Sim at The Dragon Lady Asian restaurant on board the ship

➡ Lifts, Bars, Bathrooms, Cruise App, Photos

23. Using Lifts Vs Stairs

Overall, waiting for the lifts and travelling on them weren’t too bad and you got to where you needed to be within 5 minutes.

But the lifts are atrocious on the first day with everyone getting settled into their room and looking around, or the last day moving your own luggage off the ship.

However, I felt for the most part, If you only have one to three floors to move between, then walking up or down the Stairs is going to be much Quicker.

Stair case & Lift's area on the cruise Ship

24. Bars and Casual Dining

We hung out at The Encounter bar A LOT, but seats in view of the stage filled up quickly when they had live performances or events. But, outside of the main areas was sometimes easier to snag seating for a group

Cocktails are close the $20 each, beers are about 10 to 14 dollars and I was buying vodka and soda for $12.

The Encounter Bar

This area had an outside smoking deck and it was  a lovely view passing by Moreton Island, Tangalooma Island resort and also the shipwrecks.

While the encounter was the main bar, there were other options around the Ship that were less busy for casual drinks and dining or quieter ones for specialty drinks.

This is obviously all for an extra charge.

The Ice creamery was a nice addition and obviously great for the kids on a hot day, But know it’s a popular spot and it took forever to get through the lines. Matt had to wait more than 20minutes just for a coffee.

Matt ordering a coffee from the Ice Creamery

25. Are the Bathrooms good?

While Bathrooms are available in your room and everywhere around the Ship. Even on a four day cruise, I saw so many break down or out of order.

I even ran into a Lady, who for 2 days had to leave her room in the middle of the night to get to a public toilet.

In our room, we even had to wait 5 minutes and press the button 10 times before ours flushed. Despite that, they are serviced daily in your rooms and several times a day in the Public Areas.

Toilet & Bathroom

26. What are the Cruise App features?

I decided to disconnect for our shorter Cruise. The good thing is the Cruise app on your phone works with the ships Wi-Fi for free and you can message other passengers on the boat, to help meet up with friends and family.

In theory this is a great way to save on the internet plan. However, on the downside, while it was sufficient for us this time, it wasn’t reliable at connecting, and you constantly had to reconnect or close the app completely and open it up again to use the Chat function.

On the other hand, the app was great for other things like booking dinner tables, shore excursions and tenders, accessing deck plans to know where to go, plus more importantly, get a statement of your cruise purchases throughout the journey.

While there are machines around to do this without the app. This made it easier to budget and keep a track of your finances, especially if your loading money on you card instead of securing with a credit card.

Central area of the Carnival Encounter Cruise Ship

27. Purchasing Cruise Photos?

Photo’s are taken by staff around the ship, all the time. This includes a group shot as you enter the ship, theme dress up nights, sitting at the restaurants, or on the shore excursions.

Prices are around $20 a piece for the printed copy, and it wasn’t cheaper just to get digital copies. These are all displayed on big boards in sections at the Photo Lab near the Encounter Bar.

You can pop along at any time during the trip to check them out to see which ones you like and purchase.

➡ Pools, Tendering, Casino, Cruise Etiquette

28. How Many Pools Are there?

The 2 different areas with Pools and Jacuzzis are a big hit for the family’s and kids, but I found them very noisy. One is enclosed or covered from weather and the Other is outside(both on the same Deck).

The outside one Keeps everyone entertained especially with a big screen TV playing movies like Despicable Me, or music videos.

Outside Pool Area with a big Screen on the Encounter Cruise

The Oasis Pool and Bar was my favourite pool and where I spent most of my time on the port day. I really wanted to find out what it was like staying on board when most people go to shore.

They have four different levels surrounding this pool with tables, chairs, pool lounges, bar and a smoking section. It’s Definitely a lot quieter around here – It’s also right beside the pantry, so you can get food and venture back into the adults only area.

The Oasis Adults only pool & Bar area on the carnival Encounter Cruise

29. Tendering

If you’re docking into a tendering Port, please book your time to go ashore as soon as possible. That’s unless you have booked a tour, as this generally comes with a schedule priority tender.

Queensland itineraries often include iconic destinations such as Cairns, and Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays, Each offers unique experiences, from swimming in the Great Barrier Reef, the gorgeous Whitehaven Beach or exploring the Daintree Rainforest in the top end. Otherwise there are overseas ones to New Guinea, Vanuatu, Noumea and Fiji.

While tendering adds an adventurous element, it also requires more time and planning, particularly during busy stops. Know that you’ll spend at least an hour checking in, Traveling on the tender and getting to where you want to be at the other end. So, please Factor that time into your activities.

Especially important that you know when the Last tender boat leaves from the Port and gets you back on time. If you miss it, you’ll be up for the extra costs to meet the cruise at the next port.

Tender Boat on the Cruise Ship

30. Stay Hydrated

Cruising in this area of the world involves plenty of sun, sea, and fun, making it essential to stay hydrated and prioritize your health.

The Encounter Cruise provide water stations throughout the ship, so consider bringing a reusable water bottle to refill regularly.

Insulated bottles are particularly useful for keeping drinks cool. Plus, ensure you carry sufficient water when on excursions or port days.

31. Hand Sanitizer

I’ve always taken plenty of hand sanitizer along on every trip I take. Not only is it good hygiene, but it can avoid sickness when you in such a crowded area.

While the Australian Coast is lower in the scale of risk, I would use hand sanitizer after touching communal areas, cash used on the mainland port days and when bathrooms have run out of soap.

32. Using the Casino

The casino wasn’t open on our first full Sea day, but it was every day after that. From what I found out, this will be determined from the Captain, and current weather. So might not be the same for your cruise.

There were plenty of different pokies and tables around, and never found it that full.

You can use your Cruise Card to pay for the Pokies or Tables, but expect a minimum amount to be deducted to start. This was $50 for the Tables!

In the scheme of things, I suggest bringing along some cash to pay for it, but that’s up to you. You still need to use your cruise card to use the pokies and your credit balance is stored on your card and can be transferred to other machines.

Whatever you do, don’t wait till the last minute to cash in your winnings or chips, as it’s not open on the last day. I also really wanted a Souvenir Casino chip for my collection, but this was the first place, IN THE WORLD, that wouldn’t sell me one at the cashier or from the tables.

33. Cruise Etiquette

Understanding basic cruise etiquette can enhance your experience and foster a respectful environment for all passengers and crew.

When reserving poolside loungers, avoid “chair hogging.” It’s courteous to only occupy a chair while you’re actively using it. The same goes for public spaces like lounges or theatre seats. You can arrive early for shows, but don’t hold seats for extended periods.

Respect quiet zones, such as adults-only retreats, where loud conversations or phone calls can disrupt others’ relaxation. Similarly, when navigating the ship’s hallways, keep noise levels low, especially during late hours when passengers may be sleeping.

Treat the crew with kindness and patience. They work long hours to ensure your cruise experience is enjoyable. If you encounter an issue, address it politely with guest services, as they’re always there to help.

Finally, follow ship policies, such as safety regulations during muster drills, and smoking only in designated areas.

34. Relax and Enjoy

My most important tip: relax and enjoy your cruise.

Planning and preparation are essential, but once onboard, let go of stress and immerse yourself in the experience. Cruising offers a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and stunning natural beauty. Take time to appreciate the views, whether it’s sunrise over the Coral Sea or sunset from the deck.

Don’t overpack your schedule and leave a little room for spontaneous moments.

Make the most of your downtime by exploring the ship’s amenities, from soaking in the hot tub to trying new cuisines at specialty restaurants. If you’re traveling with family or friends, prioritize quality time together, whether it’s participating in onboard activities or simply enjoying a meal.

Shore excursions are highlights of any cruise, but remember to pace yourself. The tropical climate can be exhausting if you overdo it, so balance adventurous days with relaxing ones onboard.
