Is Airlie Beach Worth Visiting? 

I definitely think Airlie Beach is worth visiting! With its stunning location, a major tourist hub, and a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. It’s surrounded by the picturesque Whitsunday Islands, which is a “must-do” location in the world. 

This beach town is truly a paradise on earth, with access to white sandy beaches and pristine, crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and scuba diving.

Best Things to do in Airlie Beach For First-timers?

This stunning coastal town is located around central Queensland, about 8 hours drive south of Cairns or 13 hours drive north of Brisbane. There are just over 4 thousand people that live there, but due to it being one of the biggest highlights in Australia, it will receive over 500 thousand tourists each year.

1. Airlie Beach Lagoon

The Lagoon is one of the best FREE spots to chill, since swimming in the ocean from the beach isn’t ideal, or If you have one day to spend in town! This year-round lifeguarded pool is perfect for all ages, whether you’re looking for a leisurely afternoon in the sun or a place to swim your laps. 

The kid’s section is great for little ones to splash around and play while parents can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with safe swimming. Plus, with ample parking nearby, it’s easy to make a day of it between the Great Barrier Reef or Island trips.

2. Honeyeater Lookout

Do you fancy a bit of exercise, love hiking, up for a challenge, or just want to get the best views in Airlie Beach? Then the Honeyeater Lookout in Airlie Beach should definitely be on your to-do list. 

While the steep 2-hour one-way ascent may require a bit of huffing and puffing, the view from the top is well worth it (especially on a clear day). You’ll find yourself awed by the Conway National Park bushland, wildlife you’ll pass on the way, and the overall lookout view of Airlie Beach. 

3. Markets

The weekly market experience in this vibrant coastal town offers unique shopping. This includes local arts and crafts, tasty treats, cute trinkets, sculptures, to freshly grown fruit and vegetables. 

If you’re on the hunt for a bargain, you’re sure to find a great deal on souvenirs and other treasured memories. And speaking of souvenirs, the markets are the perfect place to pick up a special keepsake to remember your trip by. 

4. Snorkel Great Barrier Reef

I think Airlie Beach has one of the best snorkelling sites in the state and is a must-try activity when you’re visiting. With over 1,400 species of fish, vibrant coral gardens, and crystal clear waters, the Great Barrier Reef is perfect for both beginners and experienced snorkelers.

Once you have found your place to snorkel the GBR, you’ll have the chance to explore the inner and outer reef, discover wondrous marine life, and even get up close with giant clams and turtles.

6. Hamilton Island

It worth seeing Hamilton Island by flying directly to the Island, or transferring through Airlie Beach. It’s nestled in the heart of the Whitsunday Islands, and I think it’s one of the best Islands in Queensland to visit or stay on.

As one of the largest resort islands on offer, you’ll be amazed at the endless activities and luxurious accommodations available. But what I love most about Hamilton Island is the ease of getting around on a buggy and an ideal day trips location too/. 

7. Scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef.

A scenic flight over the Whitsunday Islands or Great Barrier Reef is a definite highlight. You can choose between a helicopter or a fixed-wing plane, the best time to fly, and the budget based on the locations you want to see.

In just one hour, you can witness stunning views of the reef, including the iconic Heart Reef. Along with the swirling sand of Hill Inlet and one of Queensland’s best beaches, Whitehaven. Trust me when I say that seeing this natural wonder from the air is an unparalleled experience you won’t want to miss.

8. Day Dream Island

Being such a small Island and one of the closest to Airlie, Day Dream is a perfect Day trip to escape the mainland Australia. Make your way to this hidden gem for swimming in the clear waters, checking out the living reef surrounding the buildings, or dining in the resort.

Take time to explore the island’s unique flora and fauna, including its resident wildlife, and soak in the rays from the tropical paradise. Alternatively, you can spend the night at the resort and wake up to stunning ocean views.

9. Golf

If you’re looking to play rounds of golf during your stay, you’re in luck! The town boasts a fantastic golf course where both amateur and experienced golfers can hit the green. 

Not only is the course well-maintained and visually stunning, but there’s also a driving range available for those who want to fine-tune their swings before taking on the main course.

10. Cedar Creek Falls

Did you know that Airlie Beach has a Waterfall to visit, along with a freshwater place for swimming? Finding you way to Cedar Creek Falls is one of the best free things you can do and is only 20 minutes from the town centre. 

This waterfall is a hidden gem best seen at its most mesmerizing – in the summertime (December to March) or after rainfall. The water cascading down into the swimming hole below is impressive, surrounded by the towering rock wall. Although while the swimming hole is not deep, it’s a popular spot to sit in and cool down from that hot and humid weather. 

11. Coral Beach walking trail & Beak Lookout

Consider walking the Coral Beach trail if you’re looking for one that’s a little less challenging than the Honeyeater Lookout. It’s located near Shute Harbour and takes you to a beautiful beach made of coral. You can choose to have a dip in the ocean waters or laze on the beach over a towel. 

But if you’re feeling more adventurous, keep walking further up to The Beak lookout point and be rewarded with panoramic views of the coastline. Not only is this trail accessible for people of most fitness levels, but it also offers stunning natural beauty that is unique to the Whitsunday region. 

12. Whitehaven Beach & Hill Inlet

A day trip to Whitehaven Beach is worth it and Hill Inlet is undoubtably the best attraction to see from Airlie Beach, apart from snorkelling or diving the reef. If you’re searching for one of Queensland’s Best Beaches, then look no further than Whitehaven.

It’s hard to top the beauty of this stunning shore with pristine water, and the fine white silica sand. Not only does it look beautiful, but it can also exfoliate your skin, leaving it feeling rejuvenated. 

And let’s not forget about Hill Inlet, which is just a short distance away and included on most tours to Whitehaven. From the three lookout points, you’ll be treated to heart-stopping views of the swirling sands and changing colors of the water. 

13. Skydive

My experience of Skydiving over the Whitsundays was phenomenal, heart racing, and adrenaline-pumping. I’m just not sure there are enough descriptive words in the world to tell you about the experience, and you’re just going to have to find out for yourself. 

Imagine soaring high above the crystal clear waters and lush vegetation of Islands, then taking the leap of faith to plummet towards the earth at exhilarating speeds.

Whether you’re a seasoned skydiver or a first-time tandem rider (tandem is how I did it!), there are options for all experience levels. And with training provided by expert instructors, you can feel confident and secure as you take the plunge.

14. Whitsunday Coffee Plantation

Where are all my coffee lovers out there? All year round, you can visit the Whitsunday Coffee Plantation for a tasty lunch in the café, sample one of their coffee blends, or walk through the wildlife house. Not only that, but exotic & Australian birds are positioned around the café, and you can hear their hypnotic sounds the whole time you’re there.

In July and August, this establishment not only offers a variety of delicious coffees but invites visitors to tour the plantation and learn about the process of growing and harvesting coffee beans. Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind coffee adventure!

15. Heart Reef

The magnificent Heart Reef is a natural coral reef formation located on the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a stunning seascape wonder shaped like a heart, only visible from the air, and definitely worth seeing.

Scenic flights are the best way to see the full beauty of the reef as the Great Barrier Reef National Park protects it and is inaccessible for visitors to access.

16. Bicentennial Walk

The Bicentennial Walk is a gorgeous coastal walk that takes you past the marina and into the city’s heart. Not only is it a beautiful way to soak up the stunning scenery, but it’s also a fantastic way to exercise. 

The trail is well-maintained and easy to navigate, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll or a brisk walk. Breathing in the fresh sea air and feeling the sun on your face, is what makes this walk so enjoyable. 

17. Shops at Airlie

The shopping district in the town centre is relatively small and only 2 or 3 block in size. However, these street blocks contain local products, groceries, famous surf brands, clothing, boutiques, and eateries. 

You’ll find everything from handmade jewelry to hand-woven baskets and from locally produced honey to freshly caught seafood. And if you’re a foodie, you won’t be disappointed either. 

18. Jetski Tours

I find Jet Ski tours so much fun, feeling the wind in my hair while I’m zipping across the sparkling ocean waters. It’s perfect for those adventure seekers and nature lovers alike, with an added adrenaline rush as you explore the stunning Whitsunday Islands.

Opt for a short tour of the picturesque harbour or venture farther out for a longer ride, taking in the beauty of secluded bays and hidden beaches along the way. There is no need for a license, and you can choose a ride to suit your time and budget. 

19. Jet Boat Rides

Don’t feel like driving yourself, then the Jet boat ride might be more what you’re looking for. The Jet boats are for the thrill seeker wanting to hold on for dear life as your driver speeds across the water and performs 360-degree spins. 

The experience is nothing short of heart-pumping excitement from start to finish – as you hold on tight and soak in the breath-taking scenery around you. Not only that, but it’s great when you have an afternoon free and want to fill it in with extra fun things to do around Airlie Beach.

20. The Big Bowen Mango

I can’t deny it, I love Mango’s and can’t get enough of them. So, lucky this area of Queensland is Mango Heaven, plus you can tick off seeing another “Big Thing” in Australia and makes Bowen worth checking out. 

The Bowen Tourist Information Centre is located just 50 minutes north of Airlie and makes for a great photo op. Seriously, who doesn’t want to snap a selfie with a giant fruit? 

Plus, they sell frozen mango slices and Mango Ice-cream inside the centre, along with souvenirs, clothing, and local products. I brought a little tub of Mango Ice-cream, but make sure you gobble it down quickly, especially with the hot weather. 

21. Cape Hillsborough Kangaroos

No visit to Australia would be complete without seeing the local resident Kangaroos. Now you won’t find them in the city, and seeing them in the wild can be very random and not guaranteed.

That’s why the Cape Hillsborough Kangaroo experience is one of the best places to encounter them. 

Yes, you will have to make an early sunrise start to catch their morning feed but trust me, it’s worth it. These majestic wild marsupials on the beach are curious and friendly, and you may even get close enough to snap a selfie or two. 

Where to Stay?

If you’re planning a trip to Airlie Beach, the decision of where to stay can be a tough one. If you’re looking for a lively night scene or budget-friendly accommodation, staying in the city’s heart is your best bet, like Magnum’s or Nomads Backpackers. You’ll be within walking distance of bars, restaurants, and live music venues.

However, if a bit more luxury is on your agenda, there are plenty of high-end resorts and private villas to choose from overlooking the ocean. Even backpackers can live it up in style with some of the more affordable luxury options. 

I’ve stayed at Magnum’s Backpackers in town, the NRMA Caravan Park at Cannonvale, Mantra Club Croc, or lapping the luxury at Martinique. All of them were suitable for the price range, and you just have to research according to your location, convenience and budget. 

How do you get there?

If you’re flying into Airlie Beach, then your closest Airport is Proserpine, and you will fly directly from Brisbane or other cities in Queensland. 

It takes 30 minutes to travel from Proserpine to Airlie Beach. Therefore, you can take a shared or private shuttle bus from the Airport to central locations around Airlie Beach.

Alternatively, you can hire your own car from the Airport and drive yourself. Obviously, this helps with getting around Airlie too (as mentioned below). 

How do you get around town?

If you’re looking for the best way to get around Airlie, then I think having your own car or hiring one from the Airport would be your best bet. These can be hired from Proserpine Airport or in Airlie Beach itself.

Whether you’re planning a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef or exploring the local markets, having your own wheels will give you the freedom to go where you want, when you want. 

That being said, do you actually need a car to get around Airlie Beach? Well, that’s debatable on what you want to do. I find between the limited public Transport and day trips to the islands having Hotel pick up’s. Sometimes you can do away with needing a car.

In the end, do your research and find what’s the best option for your timeline and situation. 

How many days do you need there?

I’ve visited Airlie Beach several times, which has been anything between 1 to 7 days. But, If I were to recommend a timeline for a first-time vacation, then I think you should spend about five days in Airlie Beach. 

This allows you a couple of days in the Towns centre, with a few day tour options to see Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. 

However, if you have the luxury of time, there is plenty to do in Airlie Beach to justify a week-long stay. Whether you’re into hiking, sailing, or just lounging on the beach with a good book, there’s something for everyone. 

Best time to Visit?

While this tropical paradise is welcoming year-round, there are a few Months of the year that stand out as particularly idyllic. For those who love warm weather and endless sunshine, the best time to visit Airlie Beach is between September and November or between March and May. 

During these seasons, temperatures are in the mid-to-high 20s (Celsius), making it perfect for lazy days spent lounging on the beach or exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Plus, the crowds are thinner, and accommodations can be more affordable.
