Whitehaven Beach: Pros & Cons to visiting in the Whitsundays!
When planning a trip to the Whitsundays, one of the first questions travellers ask is: is Whitehaven Beach worth visiting? Known for its dazzling white silica sand and turquoise waters, it’s easily one of the most famous beaches in Australia.
But, fame doesn’t always equal the right fit for every traveller and many visitors weigh up the pros and cons before committing time and money. Whitehaven is remote, requires a boat, seaplane, or helicopter to reach, and can get busy during peak season.
Having visited Whitehaven Beach a few times over the years, I’ll share my honest review and break down both the highlights and downsides. In the end, it will help you decide if this Beach deserves a spot on your itinerary.

Is Whitehaven Beach Worth Visiting?
No matter how many times I’ve been, Yes, I do believe that Whitehaven Beach is worth visiting at least once in your lifetime! This stunning destination in the Whitsunday Islands is not only a part of the Great Barrier Reef, but also boasts some serious accolades.
In fact, it has won numerous awards, including the title of the world’s top eco-friendly beach. But, Whitehaven Beach’s beauty is what truly sets it apart from the rest of Queensland’s best beaches. With its pure white sand and crystal-clear waters, it’s easy to feel like you’re in paradise and honestly doesn’t take that much effort to get there.

In the same aspect, the town of Airlie Beach is worth exploring not only for access to Whitehaven Beach. But also for snorkelling, tropical warm waters, and resort Island holidays.

1. It’s made from White Silica Sand!
There’s a reason why Whitehaven Beach always finds a spot on Australia’s “best beaches” list, and it’s not just because of its dazzling turquoise water. It’s because of its jaw-dropping white silica sand, and why it’s often referred to as the whitest beach in the world.
This sand is unique because it’s made up of 98.9% pure silica, giving it a bright white hue and a texture so soft that it’ll squeak under your feet as you stroll along the shoreline. Believe me, you don’t want to miss out on experiencing the soft, powdery sand beneath your feet.
Not only does it make for the perfect photo op, but walking on it is like stepping on clouds. The sand’s high purity also gives it unique properties, like repelling heat, so even on a hot summer’s day, you’ll still be able to walk barefoot.
2. It’s part of the Great Barrier Reef!
The Great Barrier Reef is over 2000 kilometres long and stretches along the coast of Queensland. In fact, it’s big enough to be seen from space and is one of the largest living organisms. But did you know that Whitehaven is almost right in the middle of it!

As one of the premier destinations in the Great Barrier Reef, the crystal clear waters surrounding it hold precious coral reefs and diverse marine life. Therefore, if you’re looking for a slice of paradise, Whitehaven Beach should be at the top of your bucket list in Australia.
3. It’s often referred to as one of the best beaches.
I’ve travelled far and wide and seen many phenomenal beaches, but the scenes here are just hard to beat. Sometimes I find it tough to believe that this little slice of heaven is so close to where I live, and I feel lucky that I’ve had the opportunity to visit several times.
In fact, the only beach that comes close to Whitehaven would be Lake McKenzie which is worth seeing on Fraser Island. This is another option you should check out one day, which you can access from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach.
4. The Viewpoint to Hill Inlet
The viewpoint at Hill Inlet technically overlooks the northern area of Whitehaven Beach, but it’s worth seeing for the low tide swirling sands. This is the Instagramable spot you’ll see in all the photos of the Whitsundays and advertising the best vibrant colours.
It’s only a short 20-minute walk up to the lookout point and worth the effort with four different platforms to choose from. The walking path or time up there will depend on your tour, but I’ve found that most tours to will take you to the Hill Inlet lookout point at some point.

5. It’s an Award Winning Beach!
Over the years and continues today, that Whitehaven has won awards for being the best beach for several reasons. This includes Traveller’s Choice Awards, Queensland’s Cleanest Beach, and the world’s top eco-friendly beach.
Most of these awards are voted by the public or readers visiting the beach, so you would think it has to be good, right? I guess this is something you just have to see for yourself and understand where I’m coming from when explaining.
6. It’s included in a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Not only is it a stunning sight to behold, but it’s also included in one of the most prestigious lists of natural wonders! As mentioned above, this beach is included in the Great Barrier Reef and, in turn, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage areas.
It was inscribed with World Heritage Status in 1981, and collectively, the 2500 reefs, 900 islands, and sandy cays provide some of the most unbelievable maritime scenery in the world.

1. It can get expensive?
Whitehaven Beach Tours range in price from $150 to $300, and deciding which tour to take can seem overwhelming. The cost depends on various factors, such as a half-day/full-day tours, where you’re traveling from, and what else the tour includes.

It’s crucial to do your research and find the tours that suit your budget, time frame, and comfort level. Consider whether you plan to snorkel, how fast the boat is, and any extra amenities included in the tour.
2. It can be crowded!
There is only one thing I can think of why Whitehaven Beach is not worth visiting, which is the crowds on the boats and the beach. But the entire beach is seven kilometres long, so why is everyone packed in together?
It’s no secret that this stunning stretch of sand is widely popular; however, with popularity comes a downside. I felt the shores were packed with boats and people, making it difficult to enjoy the beauty of the beach without feeling like sardines packed into a can.
And I’m guessing this has something to do with the facilities needed, like Bathrooms and keeping their “ECO” status.
Based on my last recent visit, all the tour boats concentrate and dock on the same one-kilometre stretch of beach. Hence was leaving the rest of the beach empty. However, I did see helicopters docking in a different area away from the crowds, so you might want to consider that when looking at tours.

What is a typical day on the tours?
A typical day on tour will obviously visit the Beach, Hill Inlet, and possibly including snorkelling some of the reefs. Variations to this will be the time they spend in each area, where the dock, speed of the boat, and the tides determining the snorkel areas.
The beach time, you’re generally left to your own accord, and some might include lunch. You’re free to wander around, check out the surrounding bushland, laze on the beach, or swim in clear blue waters. I choose to walk around the beach a bit and try and get some space on my own. It wasn’t too hard, and happy with the photos I managed to get for this blog.
There could be choices between the northern and southern ends of Whitehaven Beach. This is the difference between walking the swirling sands on the Northern end or hanging out on the beach on the southern end. I chose the Southern beach for more beach time since I got to see the swirling sands from the Hill Inlet lookout anyway.
The inner reef snorkelling is Ok, but I prefer the outer reef for the bigger creatures and more space to move around. However, conditions on the outer reef tours aren’t always the best and not suitable for everyone.
Obviously, this comes down to personal choice, but the inner reef is great for first-timers and still pretty good if you haven’t got anything to compare.
Overall, I think you’ll have an unforgettable day no matter which tour you pick, but if I had my choice, I’d definitely opt for more beach time. There’s nothing quite like sinking your toes into that soft, white sand and soaking up the sun.
What should you bring on a Tour?
Don’t forget to pack a few essentials to make the most of your experience. Firstly, make sure to bring a camera or phone to capture all the stunning views you’re bound to see. You’ll also want to bring a towel and a swimsuit, because who can resist a dip in the turquoise waters?
Lastly, be sure to protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and remember a water bottle.
Don’t worry if you forget your snorkelling gear, as masks, fins, and snorkels are generally provided as part of the tours. However, you might need to see your options for lunch, as some have it included or for an extra charge.
Note: No shops or food sales are on the Beach, so you’ll need to bring your own if not part of the tour.
Do you need a Stinger suit to swim?
If you plan to dip in the crystal clear waters during summer, then it’s best to arm yourself with a lycra stinger suit. In Australia, this tends to be more common from December to March in the northern areas of Queensland, but you can read more into the Stinger season here.
Depending on the company and where it goes, some tours might provide the Lycra Suit or charge a small hire fee. This is the same for wetsuits and staying warmer in the water for winter time.

Are there any facilities?
While there may not be any shops or modern amenities on the Beach, some bush non-flushing toilets exist. Boats will dock on the beach near these, and you’re open to using them.
Is it illegal to take sand?
Have you ever wanted to take a piece of paradise home with you? As tempting as pocketing a shell or sand from Whitehaven Beach may be; it’s important to remember that this stunning area is highly protected and not allowed.
In fact, it’s illegal to remove any sand, coral, shells, rocks, or sticks from Whitehaven Beach. That’s because these natural resources play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of this pristine environment.

Whitehaven Beach is an incredible sight to behold and I would certainly recommend a stop at the beach if you’re passing by. It’s one of the nearest things you’ll get to vacationing in a postcard, and it does feel like paradise on Earth.
