Cairns Vs Airlie Beach – My Overall Difference!
In the scheme of things, I think the decision comes down to personal preference. I have visited Cairns and Airlie Beach several times each and think they are both ideal destinations.
However, if you are strapped for time and need to choose, then either one will be a fantastic trip away.
Briefly, Cairns might be the way to go if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, an international airport, and with easy access to the Great Barrier Reef and other attractions.
But, Airlie Beach could be the perfect place to soak up the sun, find a tropical Whitsunday Island paradise, and if you want a more relaxed coastal vibe.
Here is my side by side comparison of everything in the blog today to help you decide.

With that said, Let’s explore their other differences in more detail below and find out which one is better for you!
Which is better is see the Great Barrier Reef?
I’m just going to be direct and say it outright – I found there is very little difference between seeing the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns or Airlie Beach. This includes:
- They are very similar boats to get you there.
- The pontoons are almost identical.
- It takes about the same amount of time to get out to the reef.
- The coral colours and types of fish are similar.
- Prices for the outer reef are relatively the same.

However, I do see a difference between some Queensland snorkelling sites in the inner Reef sections (1-hour boat trip) compared to the outer Great Barrier Reef (2-3 hour boat trips).
Finding your best place to Snorkel can be overwhelming.
But simply put, the outer reef definitely has deeper waters and larger creatures around like Turtles, Groupers, or Wrasse. Whereas the inner reef sections are only a few metres deep, with smaller fish or young turtles, and you can possibly stand on the sand between the bommie’s.
But this all depends if you’re visiting Cairns & Airlie Beach for the Great Barrier Reef or the other available attractions. I find the other activities are what sets them apart from each other, and I’ll discuss this more below!

Cost & Airport
Which is more expensive?
When it comes to comparing the prices, it’s safe to say that both have higher price tags. However, in terms of options and choices with tours, accommodation & car hire, Overall I think Cairns is the clearer winner.
With more competition, a larger market, and an international airport, Cairns has managed to maintain affordable hotel prices. Plus, Cairns offers a broader range of activities and tours (including on land), making it more worthwhile investment.
With that said, Airlie Beach has been built up over the years for the young backpacker market, and my budget and choice for accommodation has been easily met here.

Where is the closest Airport?
The Cairns International Airport is just 10 minutes away from the city centre, making it the most convenient option for those traveling from far away.
Not only is it easily accessible, but it also offers a variety of flights from major cities around the world. So, whether you’re coming from Europe, Asia, or North America, you can rest assured that the Cairns International Airport will most likely offer direct flights.

However, getting to Airlie Beach is a little less convenient with its closest airport at Proserpine, about 40 minutes away. Not only that, but it’s a small domestic Airport and will require transfers from other major cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns.
Whether you’re flying in from another part of Australia or coming in from abroad, shuttle buses are available to take you directly to your hotel (or close by) in Airlie Beach.

Best things to do (Apart from the GBR)?
Cairns is fortunate to be surrounded by not one but two UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sites. This includes the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropic of Queensland. This opens up an incredible amount of rainforests to explore, waterfalls for swimming, and unique experiences.
That’s not to say Airlie Beach doesn’t have other drawcards too, but I think they are a little less known. Hence why I have listed the extra things to do below!

Tours, Best Beaches, Car Hire!
Which is better for organised tour options?
Both towns have a variety of tours to the Great Barrier Reef, Islands, and Beaches. However, since Cairns also has the Daintree National Park and tropical North Queensland rain, you also have lots of rainforests and waterfalls to see.
When it comes down to it, I could spend at least seven days in Cairns for an ideal timeline to see what the region has to offer.

On the other hand, five days in Airlie Beach would tick off most of your must-do experiences. With that said, remember to check out the other things to do in each location below and see what else you might like to do.

Which has the best beaches?
One important thing to keep in mind is that neither Cairns nor Airlie Beach offers stunning beaches for swimming, that can be enjoyed directly from the city itself.
This is not to say they don’t have a beach, cause they do! But, because they are more of a mangrove beach and have a potential for jellyfish and crocodiles.
They just aren’t a good beach for swimming!

Therefore, the only way to the white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters is by taking a boat out to the Islands or the coral reef. Or, essentially, booking a tour!
Cairns offers some brilliant activities at Green Island, as well as the beaches, along with Fitzroy Island. And both contain an abundance of marine life or coral reef just waiting for you to explore.
On the other hand, Whitehaven Beach is worth it as the epitome of beaches in the Whitsundays, along with the views of the swirling sands from the Hill Inlet lookout point. However, Day Dream Island and Hamilton Island is a must-visit for popular beach additions from this Whitsunday location.
That being said, both Airlie Beach and Cairns have Lagoon style man-made pools for safe swimming in the actual town. They are free to use, great for a cool-off, or you can find plenty of people sun-baking the day away.

Do you need to hire a car?
Suppose you’re weighing up the pros and cons of hiring a car in either.
Well, let me tell you, as someone who’s done both, I find it easier and more convenient to have a car at my disposal. This gives me the freedom to move around in my time schedule and go to lesser-known spots.
➡Find your favourite brand & compare prices for your Rental Car HERE
You’ll need to plan your journey carefully if you don’t have a car, as public transport is limited in either place and many of the best attractions are far away from the town centre.
Having your own wheels means you can come and go as you please, without waiting around for buses or taxis.

That being said, I found the tours in Airlie Beach more common with hotel Pickup and negated some need for a vehicle. However, this will depend on the activities you want to do and the companies providing them.
Note: There are NO options to see the Great Barrier Reef (for free or by your own means). Both places will require a tour or hiring a boat!

Safety, Population, Places to Eat!
Are they both safe to visit?
Cairns
Cairns has had a few issues with youth crime and increased homelessness in recent years. However, as a visitor to the city, I can honestly say that overall I’ve always felt safe in Cairns.
In my experience, the city has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, with numerous activities and attractions to explore. Although, like any city, you might want to avoid some areas alone or walking around at night.
But as long as you keep your wits about you and take the same safety precautions you would in any urban environment, there is no reason to be overly concerned.
Airlie Beach
Despite being a high tourist city, Airlie Beach has low crime incidences, making it a safe place for tourists to explore. One reason for this is that there are less locals in the area, meaning there is less competition for resources and less likelihood of tension boiling over.
So, if you’re looking for a beautiful waterfront destination that’s both stunning and safe, Airlie Beach could be the perfect getaway for you.

What’s the difference in population?
Surprisingly, there is a noticeable difference in size between Cairns & Airlie Beach. Despite that, with their access to the Great Barrier Reef, they will both receive about 500 Thousand tourists each year.
According to recent data, the population of Cairns is around 150 thousand people. That’s quite a sizeable number for a city that sits on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef and the lush rainforests of far north Queensland.

Can you believe the permanent population of Airlie Beach stands at around 4 thousand, which is about 2% of the size compared to Cairns?
It attracts tourists from all over the world for the famous Whitsunday Islands, stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere.

Can you find great places to eat?
I’m not much of a foodie, but I do love discovering new places to eat. And let me tell you, Cairns is the place to be. There are so many excellent restaurants and cafes to choose from, you’ll never run out of options.
Whether you’re in the mood for seafood, fusion, or ethnic flavours, the city has got you covered. Cairns truly thrives on its diverse culinary offerings, or at least that’s what I’ve witnessed.

While the food options may be a bit limited in Airlie, you’ll still find some great spots to enjoy a delicious meal. I managed to track down a lovely Eggs Benedict breaky in the city and a tasty seafood basket near my hotel.
But what about the nightlife? This tourist hub is widely known for attracting the younger crowd and backpackers. So its packed full of bars and music venues to keep you entertained.

Traffic, Weather, Public transport!
Which has better Traffic?
While Cairns is a beautiful city, it’s not immune to traffic issues and hold-ups. In recent years, more traffic incidences have been reported in the city. However, with a little bit of planning, you can easily avoid the busiest areas and still enjoy everything Cairns has to offer.
At the same time, with one main road going in and out, I think navigating your way around Airlie Beach is a breeze. With a limited number of hold-ups, you’ll find it easy to drive around and quickly get from point A to B.
Whether you’re cruising through the town’s main streets or heading further out for an adventure, you can rest assured that the traffic won’t be a significant concern.
Is there a difference in Weather?
Well, the short answer is Yes, there is a slight difference in weather between Cairns and Airlie Beach! Both towns are situated in a tropical climate, but there are subtle nuances in weather patterns that could affect your trip.
Note: As you can see from the MAP HERE – Cairns is over 600 kilometres, 370 Miles, or 8 hours away from Airlie Beach. This is why there is a difference in weather patterns.
Airlie Beach lies in the Whitsunday region. The summer months of December to February can be hot and humid with plenty of rainfall, while the winter months of June to August tend to be cooler and dryer.

Cairns, on the other hand, has a more tropical rainforest climate, with warm weather year-round. The rainy season in Cairns is from November to May, with the wettest months being January and February.
So depending on when you plan to visit and what kind of weather you prefer, consider these differences in your travel plans. However, I found winter in either region will need a light jacket in the evenings!

Average Winter Temperatures & Rainfall ( June to August)
- Cairns – 17 to 26 degrees Celsius (35mm, 6 days of rain)
- Airlie Beach – 12 to 24 degrees Celsius (30mm, 4 days of rain)
Average Summer Temperatures & Rainfall (December to March)
- Cairns – 23 to 33 degrees Celsius (350mm, 10 to 14 days of rain)
- Airlie Beach – 22 to 31 degrees Celsius (300mm, 10 to 16 days of rain)

Is there Public Transport?
Rest assured that there are plenty of options for getting around town in Cairns. Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of Public Transport in regional areas, but there is a network of buses running regular routes at multiple times throughout the day and night.
Airlie Beach offers a single service that runs down the main street and out to Shute Harbour, where some of the ferries leave for the beautiful Whitsunday Islands. However, many hotels offer pick-ups and shuttle services if you’re looking for something more convenient.
Additionally, taxi cabs and Ubers are readily available in both towns for those looking for a quicker or more direct mode of transport.
Stingers & Crocodiles!
Do you need to look out for stingers?
Yes, you do need to look out for jellyfish or stingers in both towns, especially during the summer months (November to March).
However, this shouldn’t deter you from enjoying the beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Tour operators in the area provide stinger suits that protect your skin from stings, so you can still swim and snorkel with peace of mind. With the proper precautions, you can have a safe and unforgettable experience.

Are there Crocodiles?
Unfortunately, Yes, crocodiles have been seen on the beaches at both. However, crocodiles rest in freshwater river streams and travel through salty waters along the coast.
Hence why all the beaches are for walking and not for swimming.
Although both locations have their fair share of these scaly predators, Cairns is considered to be the more common spot for crocodile sightings. In fact, there are plenty of organised tours in the area to show you them in their natural habitat, especially in the Daintree National Park.
However, it’s important to never let your guard down in Airlie Beach, as there have been several reports of crocodile encounters in the area.
On a lighter note, neither Cairns nor Airlie Beach are prone to crocodiles in the Great Barrier Reef areas (in the middle of the ocean), and it’s very safe to swim.
