1. Lamington National Park

The Lamington National Park was UNESCO World Heritage listed for part of the Gondwana Rainforest in 1994 and is where you’ll find tours to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. After your scenic drive, you have hiking trails on offer and a popular retreat to visit for a day trip.

The free Tree Top walk (Booyong) is a big favourite and very family-friendly. It’s only 800 metres return along the suspended bridge and consists of nine suspension bridges, around 16 metres above the ground.

Do you want a hike that’s a bit more strenuous? Then watch my video on Moran’s Falls, which is just stunning and takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete. Alternately, Elabana Falls was a favourite of mine, but, just a little harder to get to, scaling large rocks.

Strolling through the Tree top Walk in Lamington National Park

2. South Stradbroke Island

Can you believe that South Stradbroke Island is just a short distance from the city life? There are no cars, but it is accessed by water transportation like Boats, Kayaks, and I’ve even done a Jet Ski tour. You also will find nice clear waters, areas to yourself, and beautiful white sandy shores.

➡  Compare prices for South Straddie tours HERE with Viator.

You can snorkel here too, but with a lacking of coral around, the underwater creatures can be very random.

3. Moreton Island

One of the best Island Day trips would be catching the Ferry to Moreton Island, which leaves from either Pinkenba or from the Brisbane Port. Purchasing Day trip tours can differ from snorkelling and exploring the wrecks, or spending the day completing activities at Tangalooma Island Resort.

➡  Find Moreton Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator

This is your chance for an beachfront escape on the third largest sand island. Along with so much to do, from Snorkelling or diving the wrecks, swimming on the beach/pools, parasailing, or we enjoyed the nightly Wild Dolphin feeding.

Additionally, on land, the Quad Bike tours in the sand dunes are so much fun, or maybe chilling in the sunset lounge having luxurious cocktails.

4. Whale Watching

Check out this seasonal activity around May to November, with the Annual Humpback Whale migration. Each year, about 1,200 humpbacks (MegapteraIts novaeangliae) make an epic 5,000 km journey between Antarctica and Australia and then back again.

➡  Book Whale Watching Tours on HERE with GYG

Therefore, you have the unique opportunity to venture out on the water and experience this marvel first hand. Read up on my Whale Tour review here on a comfortable catamaran out on the open water. Ultimately, watching the Humpback whales breach the surface and putting on a show.

Whale Watching is very popular along the Queensland Coast

5. Theme Parks

We have spent years visiting all the Gold Coast Theme Parks and they are what draw thousands of families and holidaymakers to the region.

Each have their own unique attractions, but know that you’ll need a whole day to visit each one and have activities like water slides, rollercoasters, thrill rides, and animals experiences.

Purchasing passes from each individual park can be rather costly, but there are ways to save money with Combo tickets and included transfers. This means you can package SeaWorld, Wet N Wild, Paradise Country & Movieworld together in one pass, or Dreamworld, White Water World on another.

6. Lady Elliot Island

Lady Elliot Island is one of your first points to access the The Great Barrier Reef, UNESCO Listed and a wonder of the world. Accessing this area comes from flights that leave Coolangatta Airport.

I’ll be blunt and mention the trip can be expensive, but you can take advantage of the opportunity if you’re strapped for time seeing any other areas of the Great Barrier Reef.

A day spent at Lady Elliott Island happens to be one of best snorkelling sites, and a chance to swim with turtles, sharks, Manta Rays and thousands of fish species.

On land, you can explore and learn about the history of the Island, ECO Resort, The Lighthouse, and the extensive Bird Habitat.

7. Australia Zoo

If you’re a fan of the late Steve Irwin and his family, Australia Zoo is worth visiting. It was founded by the Irwin family and still carries on their legacy today. I personally think it’s a bit far away for a day trip from the Gold Coast, but there are plenty of First-time tourists who do it.

You can even book a tour with transfers, but, you’ll definitely have more time in the park if you have access to a vehicle and drive yourself.

The range of animals in the park has grown over the years, and I really enjoy the lemurs, elephants, and tigers. You can also get your photo taken with a koala or feed the kangaroos, which is a must in Australia!

The crocodile show is always a big hit and the last time I visited, I even witnessed a poisonous snake shedding its skin.

8. North Stradbroke Island

The Island of North Stradbroke (or Minjerribah) is a sand Island, which is much bigger in size compared to Moreton Island.

There are over 2000 people permanently living there and you have several ways ways to visit Stradbroke. Plus, beaches to explore, places to eat and drink, public transport, and accommodation.

➡  Tours leave from Brisbane, so, find them HERE with GYG

If you only have a day trip to plan, then you could start with the following:

Hanging out on Main Beach swimming or enjoying the surf, completing the Gorge Walk at Point Lookout and grabbing a meal at “Fishes at the Point” or “Loaves at the Point”.

9. Natural Bridge

Find your way to Natural Bridge, which is located in the Springbrook National Park and about 1 hour inland from Surfers Paradise.

This is the kind of waterfall where you can watch from above, with the water disappearing into a big hole. Along with underneath, where the waterfall crashes into the waterhole.

➡  Compare prices for Springbrook HERE with GYG

Ultimately, rain is always a factor with any waterfall, but this one tends to run all year round and sounds incredibly powerful in the cave. You can take an easy one-kilometre walking path with a slight elevation and stairs, but easy for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

10. Purling Brook Falls

The complete Purling Brook Falls hike is about 4 kilometres in length and will take about 2 hours to complete.

The track is formed, but there is a steep elevation to get back to the car park. There is a lookout at the top to see the waterfall, but a better view below from the gully.

It’s a loop track, with the waterhole about halfway. However, the waterfall is more prominent in the summer months after the rain. It’s a beautiful walk passing through the eucalypt forest in the Springbrook Plateau and crossing over a suspension bridge.

11. Southbank, Brisbane

Enjoy a day out in Brisbane and visit where visited millions of tourists go each year. There are enough activities in the South Bank precinct to keep your entertained, which is located straight across the river from the main CBD.

You’ll find the Cultural district with Queensland Museum, Art Gallery’s, Library and stage theatre shows. Markets are held every weekend, along with special foodie and cultural events and festivals.

The area is packed full of restaurants, bars and cafe’s, and don’t forget to bring your bathers in the summer months for “Streets Beach” (man-made and patrolled for those inner-city beachgoers).

12. Mount Tamborine

Mount Tamborine National Park is 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise and the perfect spot to include in a short road trip from the city.

If you’re seeking a green change and a place to admire the Mountains, then immerse yourself in the local food and arts.

➡  See Mt Tamborine Tours HERE with GYG

Go chasing waterfalls like Cedar Creek or Curtis Falls, soar above the sky in a Hot Air Balloon, or try delectable wines. Additionally, there is the Tree Top challenge experience, or strolling along the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk.

13. Glow Worms

You can find the incredible glow worms in the Gold Coast hinterland. This is possible at the Natural Bridge waterfall within Springbrook National Park (only at Night) and around Mount Tamborine (during the day).

The glow worms create a magical atmosphere with their bioluminescent glow, making evening tours an enchanting experience.

The best way to view these natural wonders is on tours with expert guides that offer fascinating insights into their unique lifecycle and habitat. However, you can see them for free (in your own time) at Natural Bridge. But ,please remember to bring a camera, as the sight of thousands of glow worms illuminating the dark surroundings is unforgettable.

14. Scuba Diving or Snorkelling

Snorkelling or diving in this area is a wonderful way to experience an alternate side of the Queensland coast, by being Underwater. While snorkelling is a little more accessible, you won’t find much coral or marine creatures off any surf beach.

My best suggestions would be Seeway and Tweed River on an incoming tide. But, you can also take boat tours to Kira Reef and I’ve done a kayaking trip from Southport to Stradbroke Island which included snorkelling.

Apart from that, If you do have the opportunity to dive, then you are going to come across much more marine life like Grey Nurse Sharks, Blue Spotted Rays, Mantas, Leopard Sharks or even the tiny Nudibranchs.

I have to say that learning to dive really changed my life and can open up a whole new world.

Coral reef & Fish

15. Kondalilla Falls

Kondalilla Waterfall is one of my favourite waterfall, hiking trails. Located in the stunning hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, the trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and physical challenge.

The hike itself is moderately difficult (with over 300 stairs), winding through lush rainforests, towering eucalyptus trees, and scenic lookout points.

As you make your way down the well-maintained path, the sound of rushing water grows louder, culminating in the breath-taking falls cascading into a tranquil rock pool below. It’s a brilliant spot for a refreshing swim on a hot day, and the abundant wildlife makes it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.

16. Scenic Rim

The Scenic Rim encompasses a range of eclectic towns, including Rathdowney, Boonah, Mount Barney, Aratula, and Beaudesert. Each of these towns offers its own unique charm and attractions.

Rathdowney is known for its laid-back rural atmosphere and historical museum, while Boonah boasts vibrant arts and crafts communities.

With its towering peak, Mount Barney is a hotspot for hikers and contains brilliant little rock pools for swimming. Aratula is a gateway to Main Range & Border Range National parks and offers quaint cafes and artisan shops.

Beaudesert, the largest of the towns, provides a bustling market scene and a rich history tied to Queensland’s agricultural roots.

17. Girraween National Park

If you like hiking, then the Girraween National Parks walking trails will be well worth completing. There are two hiking trails that I would recommend, and best to start them both in the mornings.

Don’t forget to take enough supplies for the day including, a hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, and a good pair of hiking shoes.

The Pyramid Track is shorter of the two, extremely elevated, and if you can make it to the top, you will see amazing views and the famous Balancing rock.

Alternatively, the Sphinx and Turtle rock hike has elevated sections, but easier for those that can’t do the Pyramid Track. But, make sure you listen out for a mass amount of cicadas!

18. Queen Mary Falls

Queen Mary Falls, located in the Main Range National Park, is a phenomenal sight that’s easily accessible.

The waterfall itself drops 40 metres into a lush, green valley, and the short, well-maintained walking path to the viewing platform ensures that you can take in the stunning views.

For those hiking lovers who seek a bit more adventure, the 40 minute trail down into the gully offers a closer look at the waterfall’s base and the surrounding rainforest ecosystem.

The cool mist from the cascading water and the sweet sounds of the birdlife make this a serene and refreshing experience.

19. Winery Tours

Are you a wine lover looking for a new adventures? Then, give one of the winery’s a visit, or take one of tours with your own personal designated driver!

Suggestions could be O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards, Witches Falls Winery, and Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard & Winery. There are options for small and large groups, and they can be tailored to your specific tastes.

➡  Find Winery Tours HERE with GYG.

This includes romantic tours for couples to group tastings with friends. You’ll get the chance to visit beautiful wineries, learn about the winemaking process, and taste delicious wines.

20. Hot Air Balloon Ride

A Hot Air Balloon experience is an experience you’re not going to forget in a hurry. Although, expect a very early start and at least 4 to 5 hours to complete it.

The morning will have you witnessing the setup, blowing the balloon up, enjoying the ride, and finally, packing everything up. This all takes time, but it’s interesting to learn how it all comes together.

➡  Find Hot Air Balloon Rides HERE with GYG

Unless you purchase a tour with included transport, you’re probably going to need your own vehicle, or at least hire one. This means most Hot Air balloons leave from open grassy areas and are well away from the big city’s.

21. Surfing

Have you ever wanted to learn to surf or want to find the best places to go surfing for the day?

Then, you have beaches that provide it, stretching over 50 kilometres down the city skyline. Obviously, the waves are dependent on the daily tides and wind, but summer or winter, you’ll find locals always out there.

➡  Book Surfing Lessons HERE with GYG

As a suggestion, you can find surfing spots at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Currumbin Alley, Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Point & Duranbah Beach. These are obviously not your only options and depend on how big you want the waves.

Learn to surf or join the locals at Currumbin Beach

22. Mount Ngungun

The Mt Ngungun Walking trail is a hiking adventure that takes about 45 minutes to reach the summit, but the views from the top are nothing short of spectacular.

It’s located in the Glass House Mountains, and this moderately graded hike is perfect for those looking to experience the great outdoors without committing to a full-day trek.

The trail winds through lush forests and rocky outcrops, offering glimpses of the surrounding landscape along the way. Once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the hinterland and ten other neighbouring peaks.

23. Currumbin Sanctuary

You’re definitely going to have fun at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. I found this to be a very good park for animal interactions and fewer cages restricting them.

➡  Book Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary Tickets HERE

If you looking at seeing Australian animals, then this is a great place to start. This includes Kangaroos, Emu’s, Birds, Snakes, and I really loved the Lemurs running around.

Additionally, the Lorikeet Bird Feeding happens at 8am and 4pm every day, outside the park. They are wild birds and come down from the local bushland to feed, which is FREE to watch, or a gold coin donation to help feed.

You can watch the Lorikeet Bird Feeding everyday for Free

24. Toowoomba

Toowoomba has plenty of things to do, along with being the largest inland city in Queensland. As a former resident, I find it maintains a charming, country laid-back feel.

Known as the “Garden City,” Toowoomba is famous for its beautifully maintained parks and gardens, with the iconic Queens Park and the Japanese Gardens being top highlights.

The annual Carnival of Flowers event (in September) is a must-see, drawing visitors from all over the country to witness the stunning floral displays and participate in family-friendly activities.

The city’s vibrant arts scene includes galleries, theatres, and live music venues, adding a cultural flair to its appeal.

25. Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a city on it’s own, with it’s beaches, local arts and crafts, foodie hotspots, diving at Julian Rocks and a backpacker haven. And if you didn’t know, Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth), even lives here.

This is where you will be crossing the border and heading down the M1 highway to this well-known hippy town. Just don’t forget to change your clocks crossing the border in the summertime, since NSW has daylight savings.

The Cape Byron Lighthouse happens to be the most Eastern Point in Australia. So, If you’re keen, there is a nice beachside, elevated hike up the mountain to visit. It’s also full of Unique shopping and dining experiences, and popular staged music festivals.

26. Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is located on the northern side of Brisbane and about two hours away from the Goldy. The Sunny Coast is very similar to the Gold Coast, but there is less people and less skyscrapers.

It’s known for its beautiful beaches, boutique shopping, and trendy cafes and restaurants. Notable towns on the Sunshine Coast include Noosa, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, and Caloundra, each offering their own unique charm and attractions.

The main beaches can get quite busy during peak season, but other quieter beaches are nearby, such as Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach.

Alternatively, there are shops and finding Rockpools for swimming, or you can take the scenic drive along the coast with ocean views and the possibility of spotting dolphins or whales during migration season.

Best Time to visit?

Honestly, the Gold Coast is a gorgeous destination to visit at any time of year, and each season brings it’s good and bad point. Ultimately is comes down to your activities and finding the best season to do them.

Summertime is the obvious choice if you love water activities like surfing, full waterfalls and snorkelling. However, the hotter temperatures make it easier to lounge on the beach all day with a good book.

On the other hand, winter brings cooler temperatures and less crowded beaches, which are perfect for a peaceful getaway. It’s also the prime time to explore the hinterland, with hiking trails brimming with wildlife.

How Many Days do you need?

When it comes to visiting, it’s hard to figure out just how many days you need. 3 days is great for Surfers Paradise, although, it might seem brief. Especially missing out on some of the best attractions and hidden gems.

On the other hand, 5 days on the Gold Coast is a reasonable amount of time for your first visit. Allowing you to hit up all the main spots while still having some flexibility in your schedule.
