5 Day Gold Coast Itinerary: A First-Timer’s Guide to Sun & Fun!

Planning a 5 day Gold Coast itinerary for first timers often starts with one big question: how do you fit everything in without feeling rushed? With famous beaches, theme parks, and hinterland rainforests, the Gold Coast can feel overwhelming.

A common problem for first-time visitors is not knowing how to balance beach time with sightseeing. Spend too long in one spot and you miss iconic experiences or try to do too much and your holiday turns into a checklist.

As a 25 year local to South East Queensland, I’ve put together this guide specifically for first timers who want a relaxed but well-paced trip. It shows you exactly how to structure your days, so you can enjoy the Gold Coast without the stress of overplanning.

My Best 5-Day Gold Coast Itinerary

Did you know there are so many different reasons that make the Gold Coast worth checking out? Honestly, I often prefer the low-key places with fewer tourists, but the Goldy always draws me in with its beachside lifestyle and adventure activities. 

Despite the towering skyscrapers, I find it can be a place to unwind with a morning stroll along the beach and listening to the sound of the waves as I go to sleep. It beckons you with its all-year-round warm sunny days and provides a rich tapestry of diverse communities and experiences.

Day 1 – Lookouts & Beaches

Skypoint Observation Deck

Today’s adventure begins with the awe-inspiring experience of the Q1 Building and you can read my review on Skypoint here. Spending roughly an hour immersing yourself in the view from the Observation Deck perched 230 meters above the ground.

Here, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama that stretches from the pristine beaches that the Gold Coast is renowned for. This includes clear across to the dense greenery of the Gold Coast Hinterland and touching on the boundaries of the UNESCO World Heritage protected sites. 

For the daring souls like me, you should set your sights on the Skypoint Climb. It’s not just Australia’s highest external building ascent – but a journey to the sky on the outside of the Q1 Building, secured only by a railing system.

Despite the initial daunting impression, after doing it twice myself, I assure you it will leave you with lasting memories.

Beach Time

With over 50 kilometres of coastline beaches to choose from, you can indulge in all your sun-soaked dreams. You might be in the mood for a refreshing dip in the water, a relaxing sunbathing session, Beach Volleyball, or other exhilarating beach activities. 

Expand your horizons just a short drive away and beyond the tourist hub of Surfers Paradise. You’ll uncover the laid-back allure of Burleigh Heads or immerse yourself in the vibrant surf culture of Currumbin. And let’s not overlook the charm of Broadbeach, boasting a beautiful stretch of sand across from the Casino.

Tumgun Lookout

The Tumgun Lookout is nestled between Burleigh Heads and Tallebudgera Creek, which consists of a walking trail and a lookout over the coastline. This short but rewarding trek is FREE to see, but also one of the best activities on the Gold Coast, offering extraordinary views that make for a perfect photo op. 

Climbing through a flourishing canopy, you will emerge to several different vistas of the expansive Pacific Ocean. During the whale migration season, this lookout becomes a prime spot for observing these magnificent creatures, for an unforgettable highlight of any visit. 

Day 2 – Exploring the Hinterland

No Gold Coast itinerary would be complete without venturing into the Hinterland and the Springbrook National Park. This means checking out one of my favourite spots and visiting the Natural Bridge waterfall!

Marvel as the waterfall cascades over ancient volcanic rock, carving its way down to form a natural arch into a cave below. Surprisingly, it’s a cave that you can venture into and experience the beauty of nature’s architecture from above and below. 

Even better, If you manage to time your visit with the evening twilight, be prepared for a mesmerizing spectacle as glow worms illuminate the cave walls(which is better in the summer from December to March).

It’s an interesting site as a photographer, creating an experience likened to a clear night sky glittering with stars. 

Fun Fact: While the Gold Coast stands on its own high-rise landscape, it is often mistakenly thought to be a part of Brisbane. But while it’s only 1 hour away, it does stand as it’s own local government area and the largest non-capital city in Australia.

Day 3 – Whales & Adventure

Whale Watching Tour

Day three will see you on an encounter with one of the ocean’s giants, embarking on a whale-watching tour.

During migration season from June to October, these amazing humpback whales (MegapteraIts novaeangliae) and their new-born calves grace the Queensland coast, offering an unparalleled experience.

Tours often set sail twice daily for a half-day adventure into the deeper waters, where you can witness the whales breach, spy hop, and splash in their natural playground. The sheer size and elegance of the whales will leave you in awe.

Plus, observing the young whales at play under the watchful eyes of their mothers offers a glimpse into the nurturing aspect of marine life. 

Jet Ski / Jet Boat

Jet skiing tours on the Gold Coast is an exhilarating experience and this is one of my favourite places to do it. Nothing compares to feeling the rush of wind against your skin and the thrill of speed at your fingertips as you glide across crystal-clear waters.

Luckily, you can choose your own pace or budget with a single or double rider. And, even better, after a safety and operation briefing from the guides, no previous experience or license is needed.

So, fasten your lifejacket and hold on tight as you set off on a high-speed adventure; it’s guaranteed to plaster a grin on everyone’s face. 

But, If the Jetski’s are not suitable for you – Then Jet Boating is slightly more low-key. While it still jets across the water, you won’t be driving and contained within a boat.

Helicopter Ride

If you’re fortunate enough to have clear skies, I definitely recommend a 15-minute helicopter tour to soar above the coastline. The flight offers a stunning perspective of the Gold Coast skyline that is second to none.

During my last visit, I embraced the opportunity for this aerial escapade, and as you can glean from the photos, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.

The expansive ocean views, shimmering skyscrapers, and intricate waterways unfolded beneath us in a mesmerizing display of vibrant colours and sparkling waves.

Day 4 – Animals & a Cruise

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Just a short 30-minute drive from the central hub of the Gold Coast lies the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. This green oasis beckons both animal lovers and families, offering a day’s immersion among Australia’s native wildlife and worldwide additions.

There is a variety of feeding sessions and captivating shows. Plus, tourists can delight at the charming koalas, hop alongside kangaroos, witness the power of crocodiles, and catch a glimpse of the slithery movements of snakes. However, I was amazed at the spectacular bird show, where a Wedge Tail Eagle and other species wandered the stage.

While nothing compares to observing animals in their natural habitats, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary bridges that gap by providing interactive experiences that are both educational and respectful.

River Cruise

A river cruise is an ideal way to shift from the thrills to a relaxed and leisurely exploration mode. Gliding along the water’s surface, the captain shares intriguing details of the Gold Coast’s development and points out the mansions lining the banks.

This tranquil excursion contrasts the towering skyscrapers, inviting you on a serene journey through the city’s quieter, more luxurious side. Aboard the vessel, you could be served delectable snacks while sipping your favourite drink. All this, while admiring the day turn to night and watching the sun dip below the horizon. 

Day 5 – Theme Park Day

Which Theme Park to Choose?

It can be hard to choose between all the Theme Parks available. Between the heart-pounding rides of Dreamworld, the cinematic allure of Movieworld, and the marine wonders of Seaworld. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll find the exhilaration of the water parks, such as White Water World and Wet’n’Wild, to be unbeatable.

Whether it’s the twists and turns of a rollercoaster or the splash and speed of water slides. Each park promises an action-packed day that will leave you with memories of adrenaline-fueled joy.

Where to stay?

Surfers Paradise is often the go-to choice to stay for tourists, but it is by no means the only option. Here, you’ll find a bustling atmosphere and proximity to iconic beaches, shopping, and nightlife that can make for an exciting stay. A couple that we have stayed at include:

However, for those seeking something quieter or perhaps more refined, several alternatives are worth considering along the coast. Areas such as Broadbeach offer a slightly more subdued environment, with equally high-quality accommodation and fine dining, but with a more casual vibe. 

For a family-friendly atmosphere, look towards Main Beach or Burleigh Heads, where the pace slows down and the focus shifts to community and stunning natural surroundings. 

To maximize savings without sacrificing the experience, consider accommodation a block away from the beach. These options can provide a quieter atmosphere while giving you access to the sand and surf. 

When is the best time to visit?

The Gold Coast is a true year-round destination thanks to its sub-tropical climate and over 300 days of sunshine annually. Temperatures are generally pleasant throughout the year, averaging in the mid to high 20s°C.

If your main focus is beach time and water activities, getting closer to summer (December to February) is ideal. During these months, daytime temperatures often reach 28–30°C, and the sea is warm for swimming, surfing, and water parks. 

However, summer also brings higher humidity, the chance of short but heavy rainstorms, and larger crowds, especially during school holidays. 

If you’re like me, I prefer milder weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons-autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November)-are excellent alternatives. 

Do you need a car?

Navigating the Gold Coast can be a breeze with the convenience of a car hire (especially for today’s itinerary). I like the freedom to explore at your own pace, without the constraints of tour schedules or public transport timetables, is invaluable.

However, for those whose plans centre around easily accessible tourist districts, walking or making use of the available tour options could suffice for a focused trip.

Where is the closest Airport?

Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta) is the closest airport, and you’ll find both international and domestic flights into here. However, some travellers find flying to Brisbane Airport more economical and flexible. 

I’ve flown into both, but Brisbane tends to offer a wider array of flight options with flexible travel schedules. Although, I do see special deals come up for the Gold Coast all the time. 

However, If you do arrive in Brisbane, visitors can take advantage of various ground transportation options, including public transport to the Gold Coast, shuttles, or car rentals, for the scenic commute, adding an enjoyable start to their adventure.

When it comes to navigating from the airport to your hotel, shuttle services offer a convenient door-to-door solution that can be booked in advance for both Brisbane and Coolangatta airports. Alternatively, a range of taxis and Ubers offer immediate transportation options. 

For those looking for a more budget-friendly option, public transport is readily accessible, with bus services covering major routes and the G-link tram offering reliable connections from Broadbeach to Helensvale. 

Alternative Options or Swaps!

While I think I have the best Itinerary planned for you above, it might not suit everyone or there a a few items you might want to swap out. This brings me to the list of activities below.

If you find you have more time, or want to spend your day doing something else. Use this list below to help you out.

1. Labrador Pelican Feeding

Over the years the pelicans have increased in numbers and all congregate around the Charis Seafood Shop on Marine Parade in Labrador. Around 1:30pm every day, someone from inside the shop will come out with a big bucket of scraps and the feeding frenzy began.

To make the most of your experience, be sure to arrive a little early to observe the pelicans as they gather and interact with one another – Sometimes fighting of course.

But, don’t get too close as some of them can be a bit angry.

2. Aquaduck

Have you ever seen an amphibious vehicles? There are two different operators on the Gold Coast with these vehicles, and you can book a city tour both on land and on water.

While your driving around, the local guide will provide live commentary on the area, hotels, streets and the beaches. Then all of a sudden, you’re driving into river and doing much the same here but with a lot more flexibility to move around the cabin.

The tours only go for an hour and they have plenty of departure times throughout the day, so convenient to jump on when you have some time to fill in.

3. Ripley’s Believe it or Not

The “Ripleys Believe or Not” centre has been around for years on the Gold Coast and I think I’ve been through the museum more than 10 times.

There is no shortage of fun and unusual things to discover and you venture through room after room, in over 1,000 square metres of space.

With more than 300 genuine artefacts, incredible illusions, and life-size figures of unusual characters who actually lived. Make sure to check out the Ripley’s LaserRace, and the all-new Ripley’s 7D Moving Theatre.

4. Putt Putt

I find that Mini Golf or Putt Putt is a great time filler. Its also a lot of fun, but, so frustrating when you can’t get the ball where you want it – LOL.

Challenge you family or friends to a game at one of the courses on the Gold Coast. These can range in themes from Egyptian, underwater scenes, an aloha course, or tiki inspired.

Choose the number of holes you want to play depending on your budget and how much time you have. There is no skill needed and I think it’s way more entertaining when your really bad at it.

5. Indoor Skydiving

The Ifly Skydiving centre is set up primarily for first timers ticket buyers, but also intermediate or the expert levels. And, if you have the time, It’s cool to watch the experts flying around.

I remember trying this myself and it’s much like a baby walking for the first time. I’m sure it would be more fun once you get a hang of it, but still entertaining to try it out.

It even gets cheaper the more times you go and kids are able to give it a go too. The instructor stays in the tunnel to hold your hand and helps you get your balance.
