Day 1 – Whitehaven Beach & Hill Inlet
At the top of our list and day one of our itinerary, we have one of the best beaches in the world.
The Whitehaven Beach tours are worth it, and you should allocate a whole day to explore it and the swirling sands of Hill Inlet. Along with the snorkelling opportunities in the inner sections of the Great Barrier Reef.

You’ve probably seen it in all the postcards as it’s a whopping 7 kilometres long. Not only that but the sand is made of 98% silica, AKA quartz powder. But also incredibly white and soft to the touch and surprisingly, doesn’t retain much heat.
➡ Find Whitehaven Beach Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
You’ll leave in the morning from Airlie and make your way toward Whitsunday Island. You can get to Whitehaven by sailing boats, catamarans, and speed boats, and they generally go to the same areas. You’re in for breath-taking views, turquoise swimming waters, and plenty of opportunities to see the swirling sands.
So get those cameras ready because this is one of the must-see Queensland beaches!

Day 2 – Scenic Flight, Lagoon, Shops, Restaurants
Your second day will have you exploring more, but working around a Great Barrier Reef & Heart Reef Scenic Flight.
While the flight time is around 60 minutes, working out the best time to fly the Whitsundays, travel time, safety briefings, and check-in will add up to roughly 2.5 hours.
➡ Find Scenic Flights HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
Not only is a flight a great way to start your Whitsundays adventure, but it also gives you the lay of the land (and sea!). With phenomenal views of the islands and the Great Barrier Reef, you can soak up the beauty of this stunning part of the world and get excited about what else is in store for the rest of your trip.

Utilise your free time around the flight by checking out the main streets of town. You can find pretty much anything you’re looking for here, from restaurants, shops, and enough activities to entertain you for days. It could also include a relaxing swim in the man-made lagoon or pool.
And if you’re up for a bit of a walk, we loved the Bicentennial Walkway stretching a few kilometres and passing the different Marinas through Airlie’s coastline.

Day 3 – Snorkelling tour in the Outer Reef
No itinerary would be complete without a snorkelling tour in the Great Barrier’s Outer Reef. Therefore, our third day will take you on another full-day tour to Hardy Reef and a pontoon full of adventure.
➡ Book the Pontoon HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
It might be a long ride on the boat out to the reef, but worth it for the remarkable moments on the coral reef, colourful fish, and underwater viewing chambers. They will provide all the gear, including an amazing buffet lunch selection with snacks.

However, among a few downsides to the Outer Reef Pontoon tour, I especially recommend checking the weather and conditions before booking, as it’s not always brilliant everyday.
The Great Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site and, in fact, one so large it can be seen from space. It’s not just an activity, but an unparalleled experience of discovering a life form that is as diverse as it is enchanting.

Day 4 – Hamilton Island
If I was going to choose any island to visit off the coast, Then Hamilton Island is worth checking out. It takes about an hour to get there from the mainland, and full of fun activities to keep you entertained. And, the best part is, Golf Buggies are your primary mode of transportation.

Hamilton Island is the go-to destination for anyone exploring the Whitsundays – whether on a day trip or a longer stay. The setting is nothing short of idyllic, and you will feel a sense of peace and calm as soon as you set foot on the island.
Chill out on Catseye Beach or drink a few cocktails by the tropical-style pool. And if you’re keen on some Instagram-worthy views, make sure you head up to One Tree Hill. The name says it all, and you’ll be perched atop a hill surrounded by lush greenery.

Day 5 – Waterfalls, Coffee Plantation & Sailing.
We are at the end of our itinerary in Airlie Beach, which sees us checking out more local activities. Start off your day with a short 20-minute drive and find Cedar Creek Falls in the Conway National Park. You can choose to swim in the fresh waters or try walking up to the top of the waterfall.
➡ Check Sailing Cruises HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.

After that, road trip another 20 minutes to the major A1 Bruce Highway and spend either brunch or lunch at the Whitsunday Gold Coffee Plantation. Stop in for that coffee fix, try one of their delicious burgers, or walk around the small farm of baby animals and birds.
In the evening, picture yourself cruising off into the sunset aboard a beautiful sailing boat, feeling the wind in your hair and the salty sea spray on your skin. As you sit back and relax, watch in awe as the colours of the sky slowly change from shades of orange and pink to deep purples and blues.

Where to Stay in town?
Finding a place to stay in Airlie can be a daunting process, but I find it easier to round down my options based on price, where I need to go to pick up tours and if I have a car or not. If you need more detailed help, you can always click for my Airlie Accommodation post here.
➡ Find Airlie Beach Accommodation HERE with Booking.com
We’ve stayed at Magnum’s Backpackers, Mantra Club Crocodile, Martinique & the Airlie Beach Hotel.

However, one excellent option is using caravan parks, and I’ve been very comfortable in the cabins they have available. They are budget-friendly, and some allow for cooking, which is perfect for adventurous souls allocating your holiday budget to activities.
If you are willing to splurge, the luxurious 5-star resorts near the town centre are high-end accommodation options. With picturesque views and top-notch amenities, they offer a lasting experience.

FAQ’s – Common Questions?
How to get there & around?
There are several different ways to get to Airlie beach, which include Flying, self drive road trip, bus, or by Train. However, the Flights and Train will go as far as Proserpine and you’ll need to decide how you’ll get around Airlie from there.
For me, I like the freedom of my own car, so will always opt for road tripping, or hiring a car from the Airport or Train. This way, you can go wherever you please, whenever you please.
➡Find your favourite brand & compare prices for your Rental Car HERE

If you need more help with road trips, please see my guide on planning 10 days between Brisbane and Airlie Beach, or some of my best stops between Brisbane and Cairns.
Since the Proserpine Airport is a 35-minute drive to Airlie Beach, you can purchase a seat on the shuttle buses that run regularly throughout the day. These will drop you at your accommodation, or someone nearby. You could also check with your hotel that airport pickup could be included.
➡ Book your Shuttle from Proserpine HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
Apart from that, you have Public Bus transportation around Airlie Beach and Proserpine. Therefore, if you have the flexibility of time, then it can be a cheaper option.

Best time to visit?
Airlie is a year-round destination but comes with some pros and cons for each season. This factors in Budget, Crowds, weather and conditions! You can read up on my details about the best time to visit here, but as a whole, we love visiting in the shoulder seasons. This is around Autumn/Spring from March to May and September to November.

At this time you’ll enjoy minimal rain and warm weather, perfect for outdoor activities like diving, snorkelling, and exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Plus, less need to worry about jellyfish season, which is a common occurrence in the summertime from December to February.
Although wintertime from June to August is cooler and some tour options may close down, there’s still plenty to do and see. However, know there are always options to see the Great Barrier Reef by air or land and visit the swirling sandbars near Whitehaven Beach.

Is Airlie Better than Cairns?
As a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, both Cairns and Airlie Beach have their respective advantages.
Cairns is definitely a more accessible option, as it has a large International airport and a couple of cheaper snorkelling opportunities. However, what really sets Cairns apart is the abundance of things to do in the nearby Daintree National Park and a second UNESCO area to explore.

On the other hand, Airlie Beach may require a bit more effort to get to, but its smaller size and charm make its proximity to the reef quite appealing.
Having visited both myself, I ultimately think the Great Barrier Reef is essentially the same at either and both are considered a bucket list destination in Australia.

It’s a unique and special place with so much to offer for those who want to spend some time here. Whether you want relaxation or adventure, these five days will bring fun Airlie times and unforgettable memories.
