11 Ways to Get Around Airlie Beach in Queensland

When planning a Whitsundays getaway, working out how to get around Airlie Beach is one of the most common questions that comes up. While Airlie Beach is relatively compact, transport options can feel limiting at first, especially when you’re trying to reach marinas, beaches, lookouts, and day-trip departure points without wasting time.

Many first-timers aren’t sure whether they need to hire a car, rely on walking, use local buses, or book tours that include transfers. Add in hilly streets, parking meters, and different transport needs, it’s easy to feel unsure about the best way to get around.

Having visited Airlie Beach 20 times over the years and explored it in different ways, I’ve put together this practical guide to help you move around with confidence. In the end, it will break down exactly how to get around Airlie Beach so you can focus on enjoying your first visit rather than stressing over logistics.

How to Get around Airlie Beach?

While you might be looking into options to get around, have you worked out how you’re getting to Airlie Beach in the first place? Honestly, I find this could influence your decision and benefit you in finding out first.

If you know anything about me, I would always opt to hiring a car, but second to that, I’ve booked tours that include hotel pickup. However, I have the following 11 options you could consider when finding out how to get around Airlie.

  1. Hiring your Own car
  2. Using Shuttle Transfers to & from the Airport
  3. Complementary Hotel Bus services (specifically from some Luxury Hotels)
  4. Taxi Rides
  5. Uber Rides
  6. Using Whitsunday Public Bus Transport
  7. Walking the streets from your Airlie Beach Accommodation
  8. Booking Airlie Tours with hotel Pickup
  9. Ferry Services
  10. Tuk Tuk Rides
  11. Hiring a Bike or Scooter.

I think you need to round down if you’re looking for efficiency, affordability, or a combination of both, but there’s no shortage of ways to get around Airlie Beach!

But, read on, and I’ll go through these in more detail.

1. Car Hire

When it comes to exploring Airlie Beach, I have to say that car hire is my absolute favourite way to get around. Whether you choose to hire a car once you get there or take a road trip from Brisbane in your own vehicle, this mode of transportation offers so much convenience and flexibility.

Even if you only had one day in Airlie, having your own car makes these adventures more accessible and stress-free. It also gives you the freedom to explore the beautiful towns nearby Airlie Beach at your own pace.

As a suggestion, one of the best things I enjoyed was taking a day trip to Northerlies Pub. Plus, it will come in handy to visit places like Lions Lookout, Cedar Creek Falls, Dingo Beach, or the Coral Beach Walking Trail.

In the end, if you plan maybe five days in Airlie and choose one or two days for driving around. Then you can save the cost of a hire car on the days you don’t need it.

2. Shuttle Transfers from the Airport

Shuttle Busses is an affordable option that will get you from Proserpine Airport straight to your accommodation doorstep! Not only is this option cheap, but it’s also hassle-free and eliminates the need to rent a car.

➡  Find Airlie Airport Shuttles HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.

However, it’s important to note that shuttle buses may not be the best option if you plan to explore some of the things surrounding Airlie. If that’s the case, be sure to check out the other transportation methods discussed in this post.

3. Hotel Bus

When looking for places to stay in Airlie, it’s always a good idea to consider the perks that come with your accommodation choice. One great advantage to keep an eye out for is the availability of Complementary shuttle buses that can take you to various areas around town or to/from the airport.

But know, this is generally reserved for the luxury options!

➡  Compare Airlie Beach Accommodation HERE with Booking.com

Depending on the hotel you choose, you might be able to hop on a shuttle and easily make your way to restaurants and tours without having to worry about navigating the area yourself.

So before you make your hotel booking, be sure to check their specifications to see if this convenient transportation option is available.

4. Taxi

When it comes to transportation, taxis are your best bet if you aren’t heading too far from your hotel. Airlie Beach may be small, but it’s jam-packed with excitement and adventure and you won’t be short of things to do.

To stay up to date and make your journey even smoother, download the Mackay/Whitsunday Taxi App. With this handy tool, you can easily keep track of your taxi’s location and arrival time.

It’s especially important to remember that during high season and in the evenings, extra wait times or fees may be applied.

5. Uber

While Ubers have existed in Airlie Beach (on and off), they might not be the quickest or most reliable mode of transportation.

It’s best to keep in mind that Ubers tend to be few and far between (if any at all), and you could either not have one available at the time of your visit, or potentially end up waiting a bit longer.

But, this doesn’t mean the situation could change for the better in the future.

6. Public Bus Transport

If you’re looking to save money, the bus service provided by Whitsunday Transit might just be the perfect solution for you. Their service runs from Proserpine to Shute Harbour and is generally available until about 10:30 pm.

Normally prices are starting at just $2.4 for a single trip through one zone, or $4.8 for a daily pass in the same zone. Although cheap Queensland fares exist at the moment for just 50cents for one way travel. So, it’s easy to save money while still getting where you need to go.

The bus is a convenient and affordable option that’s ideal for anyone looking to cut costs without sacrificing convenience.

Although it does require a bit of planning ahead and keeping a strict time schedule to ensure you make it to your tours on time, it offers the cheapest way to get around Airlie Beach.

7. Walking around Airlie

There’s no better way to explore Airlie, than by foot. Two feet and a heartbeat are all you really need to take in the stunning natural beauty of this area.

If you’re staying in the general city area, then there’s no reason why you can’t walk most places. Not only is it cheap and convenient, but you can also get your heart pumping as you stroll past gorgeous beach views.

The Bicentennial Walkway

But before you book any tours, take a moment to consider how you’ll get to the starting point. Some tours offer hotel pickups, while others have meeting points close to your accommodations.

Checking these details before booking can save you time and hassle while ensuring you get to see everything you want to see.

And don’t forget about the Bicentennial walkway! This wooden walkway spans from Cannonvale Beach all the way to Airlie Beach, so there’s plenty to explore along the way. But if you’re short on time or just in the mood for a leisurely walk, the stretch between Cannonvale Beach and Peninsula Apartments is just 1.25km long and oh-so picturesque.

8. Tours with Hotel Pickup

I was happy to see there were a lot of tours on offer with Hotel Pickup, which can save you from hiring a car, or using the public Transport.

In particular, out of all the ways to get to Whitehaven Beach, we picked the one with hotel pickup. Even though we did have car, it made it easier to leave it at our hotel and save on paid parking.

➡ Find Airlie Beach Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.

Therefore, research your options when exploring the Great Barrier Reef from town and make sure you check all platforms. Something I just noticed recently in another location, was Viator offered hotel pickup and Get your Guide didn’t – for the same tour.

This can also work in reverse, so I just advise to look into both first.

9. Ferry’s Services

Ferry Services are your gateway off the coast and visiting the Whitsunday Islands. So getting to Daydream Island, Hamilton Island, or any of the other spectacular destinations in the area just got a whole lot easier.

➡ Find Airlie Beach Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.

With Ferry’s service departing regularly from one of the Marinas, you can now explore the pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters at your own leisure.

If you’re headed to Hayman Island, don’t worry, they have their own ferry service, which can be booked when you book your accommodation. Otherwise, at Long Island’s Elysian Retreat and Palm Bay Resort, you’ll need to depend on the water taxi service from Shute Harbour.

Note: There are no ferry’s to Whitehaven Beach, but you can book tours to get there.

10. Try a Tuk Tuk Ride

Want to explore Airlie Beach in a way that’s fun, unique, and informative all at once? Look no further than Just Tuk’n Around!

With their pedicab tours, you can bike around the main street and learn about the area’s history from knowledgeable locals.

11. Bike or Scooter Hires

Conveniently, there are a handful of Bike or Scooter Hire places scattered throughout the town, with prices that vary depending on what kind of vehicle you’re after and how long you plan on using it for.

Now, some people might argue that it’s pretty expensive just to get from point A to B. But if you view hiring a bike or scooter as more of an adventure than a means of transport, then you’re in for a fun time!

How to get to the Great Barrier Reef?

Great News is there are plenty of ways to experience this iconic natural wonder, so you can choose the option that best suits your style.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not opt for a thrilling ride on a Fixed-winged plane? You’ll enjoy an unforgettable bird’s eye view of the reef and its surrounding waters. Or alternatively, you can make a statement with a helicopter ride in the ultimate luxury aerial experience!

However, it’s important to do your research and find the best time to fly to the Whitsundays so you can make the most of your experience. Trust me, the stunning aerial view of these natural wonders is worth every penny.

On the other hand, a leisurely boat ride might be more your speed since there’s nothing quite like the feeling of the ocean breeze on your face as you glide across the waves. Either way, the Great Barrier Reef awaits you, so explore this natural wonder in style.

How to get to Whitehaven Beach?

If you’re heading to Airlie and want to experience the beauty of Whitehaven Beach, then may I suggest taking a boat tour? It’s definitely the easiest way to get to Whitehaven, and it’s well worth the ride.

I recently took a day trip and explored the southern area of Whitehaven, and I was blown away by how stunning it was. Not only that, but the lookout point of Hill Inlet provided the perfect panoramic view.
