If you’re planning a Queensland Island getaway, chances are you’ve come across two iconic names, Moreton Island and Fraser Island. Both offer stunning beaches, 4WD adventures, and unique attractions, but which one is the right choice for your trip?
First-time visitors often find it tricky to decide between the two. The challenge is that while these islands share similarities, they deliver very different experiences. I’ve had the chance to explore both (many times), and each offers something special depending on the kind of adventure you’re after.
Today, I’ll break down the key differences between Moreton Island and Fraser Island, covering accessibility, attractions, activities, and overall vibe, so you can decide which destination suits your style of travel.

Moreton Island Vs Fraser Island (K’Gari) – Which should you visit?
If you’re asking me, I think Moreton Island & Fraser Island(K’Gari) both deserve a visit! But, Moreton is easier for a day trip and snorkelling locations like the Tangalooma Wrecks. On the other hand, Fraser is biggest sand island in the world, UNESCO Heritage listed, many unique attractions, but you will need more time to see it.
Todays post will look deeper how easy they both are to get to, accommodation, weather, costs, and organised tour options. Not only that, but what there is to do there and unique sites to see.
As a quick guide, please see this comparison table below, or read on further for more detail.

Which is Bigger Moreton or Fraser?
🏆Winner: Fraser Island
Fraser Island (K’Gari) is the largest sand Island in the world, at roughly 1655km2 in size. Not only that, but it contains one of the very few rainforests growing in sand.
On the other hand, Moreton Island is 186km2 in size and is the third largest sand Island in the world. This is about 10% of the size of Fraser, but that still doesn’t mean it’s an Island you can walk around.
Just so you know, the four largest sands islands in the world are all located in South East Queensland. Apart from Moreton & Fraser Island mentioned in todays post, you have Stradbroke Island (275 km2) is the second largest, and Bribie Island (148 km2) is the fourth largest.
Which has better beaches?
🏆Winner: Moreton Island
Both of them have nice beaches, but if you looking to swim and snorkel, then Moreton Island is the clear winner.
Unfortunately, Fraser has strong rips and a higher risk of sharks that it’s not recommended for swimming at the beach or ocean waters. But, you can still swim in Eli Creek, Champagne rock pools, and don’t forget the amazing Lake Mackenzie, which is one of my favourite beaches in Australia.

Which is Easier to get to?
🏆Winner: Moreton Island
Overall Moreton Island is smaller and with the resort setup, I think is easier to get to for everyone, especially when you don’t have a 4WD . But, the truth is, you can access both Moreton Island and Fraser Island with and without a 4WD vehicle.
However, without your own Four Wheel Drive vehicle does come with some limitations. So, let me explain this in more detail below.
How to get to Moreton Island?
As a whole, there are a few different ways to get to Moreton Island.
1. Get to the Tangalooma Resort
Firstly, there is a passenger Catamaran leaving from Pinkenba in North Brisbane which cost about $95 return for an adult. When you get to Moreton, It’s only a short walk from the Jetty where you’re dropped off, right at the Resort
While there, you are limited to using the facilities of the Tangalooma Island Resort, or walking 30 to 40 minutes down to explore the Shipwrecks.
You can also buy tour packages to include other things to do near the resort, or take their day tours into the National Park areas for sand tobogganing.

2. Get to the Tangalooma Wrecks
On the other hand, there is a passenger and Car Ferry leaving from the Port of Brisbane which starts about $76 return per adult and starts from $110 one way for a vehicle (this is the cheapest way to get to Moreton).
The drop-off point will be on the other side of the resort and closest point to the Shipwrecks.
From here you’ll either walk the beachside shores as a passenger, or you can purchase a $59.80 monthly Driving permits to 4WD yourself across the Island and use the camping sites for $7.50 per adult per night.

3. Using Organised Tours
In the end, there are options if you don’t have your own Four Wheel Drive Vehicle, have limited time, or want help seeing the sites.
Organised tours range in price from $110 to 250 per person and leave Brisbane almost every day to both these areas of Moreton Island.
➡ Book Moreton tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
These vary in things to do from Snorkelling or kayaking the wrecks, exploring the Island, and checking out the resort to see the wild dolphins that visit every night.

How to get to Fraser Island?
1. From Hervey Bay
As for K’Gari or Fraser Island, you can catch the passenger ferry from River Heads (near Hervey Bay) for $65 return and get dropped off at the Islands Jetty.
For those staying at the Kingfisher Bay Resort,, they have a courtesy shuttle drive you to reception and check-in.
From here, you’re either limited to the resort facilities, organised tours around the Island, or hiring a 4WD vehicle from them to see the sites. However, If you’re camping on Fraser Island or staying anywhere else, you will definitely need a 4WD.

2. From Rainbow Beach
From Rainbow Beach, you can drive your 4WD to Inskip Point and catch the Mantaray Barge, which will drop on the southern tip Beach of Fraser Island.
This allows you to drive straight up the east coast onto all the best sites. From there, you can reach your accommodation and see the Fraser Island highlights in your own time.
If you’re bring your own vehicle, the prices starts from $130 return and go up to $260 return depending if you’re towing and catching from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach.
You can purchase a $59.80 monthly Driving permits to 4WD yourself across the Island and use the camping sites for $7.50 per adult per night.

3. Organised Tours
Without a 4WD or you have limited time, then there are one and two day organised tours ranging from $110 to $500. These leave from Brisbane, Hervey Bay, and Rainbow Beach.
➡ Book Fraser Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
I find the One day tours are extremely busy, but doable if you’re short on time. Otherwise I ultimately recommend at least the two day tours to see a few more sites, with a little bit of downtime.
Handy Tip: Know that some organised tours have priority on Barge ferry’s over to the Islands or booked in advance. This helps stick the tour to its schedule and allows you the most time on Island itself.

Which has more things to do?
🏆Winner: Fraser Island
While both Sands Islands, they have some very distinctive differences, but I think Fraser Island has more variety and unique attractions. Apart from swimming in the ocean or fresh waters lakes, you can see and do some of the things below:
Things to do at Moreton Island
- Snorkelling & Diving the Shipwrecks
- Wild Dolphin Feeding
- Parasailing
- Quad Bike tours
- Sand Boarding and dunes
- Helicopter Flights
- Cape Moreton Lighthouse
- Blue Lagoon Rock Pools
- World War 2 remnants
- Five hills lookout

Fun Fact: Did you know that the original Scooby Doo Movie with Sarah Michelle-Gellar and Freddy Prince Jr was filmed around Tangalooma Island Resort. The stars themselves actually stayed in this ECO Resort while filming on Moreton Island.
Things to do at Fraser Island
- Rainforest & Central Station
- Wabby Creek
- Eli Creek
- The Pinnacles Rock formation
- SS Maheno Ship Wreck
- Fixed wing plane flights
- Champagne Rock pools
- Indian Head
- Drive 75-mile beach
- Lake McKenzie
- Spot a Dingo
- Sandy Cape lighthouse

Which has more places to stay?
🏆Winner: Fraser Island
Moreton Island has only the one resort, Tangalooma Resort plus all the different camp grounds and some private holiday homes at Bulwer.
Whereas Fraser Island has Kingfisher Bay Resort on the west coast and the K’Gari Beach Resort) (formally Eurong) on the East Coast. There are also private holiday homes listed on Airbnb and Booking.com and the numerous camping sites.

Is One day enough to see either?
If you only have one day, then organised Tour options are available for Moreton Island and Fraser Island. While you’re still limited to a few highlights and sites on the Islands, it is a way more cost-effective way to see them in one day.
➡ Find Moreton Tours HERE, or Fraser Tours HERE
The downside to tours will be rushed and be in the bus travelling for an extended part of the day. Ideally, I recommend at least 2 days and 1 night on either Moreton or Fraser Island without a car, or 1 week with a car.
Note: If you’re planning to 4Wheel Drive yourself to Moreton Island or Fraser island, I don’t think one day is enough or worth it for either island. The costs alone for permits and ferry transfers would be excessive and limit what you can see in that amount of time.

Can you access the Islands without a Tour?
Yes, you can access both without a Tour but they can be limiting if you don’t have a 4WD. However, I would recommend it to be more worthwhile on Moreton Island than on Fraser Island.
Moreton
Moreton Island’s highlights are generally surrounding either with the attractions around Tangalooma Island Resort, near the wrecks or the sand dunes.
You can catch the first passenger ferry to Moreton in the morning, enjoy a full day of activities or hanging out on the beach and depart on the last ferry home.
However, know that the ferry that drops at the wrecks, does not have resort access. So if you’re planning to go down there, you will need a Free “Casual Day pass” booked online through Tangalooma Island Resort, before arriving.
If you have booked the resort ferry, then this already has the required access.
Although, without a tour, or your own 4wd, You won’t be getting to the sand tobogganing dunes.

Fraser
On the other hand, Fraser Island is worth visiting for the rainforest, sand dunes, and beaches covering a massive area. Sure, you could go and stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort and not see anything, But I can’t see the point of that.
This is all Four-Wheel Drive-only territory, so you either need a 4WD, hire one, or take a tour to see all these sites.

Best Time to visit, Fuel, Service, & Dingo’s!
When is the best time to visit?
With a warm tropical climate, either island is good to visit at any time of year.
However, the Summer Season from December to February will be hot and humid, with higher Rainfall. While the Winter Season, from June to August, will have beautiful sunny days, amazing weather, but colder waters.
Most of the activities on either Island will require some sort of swimming. In that case, I suggest visiting around the shoulder summer season might be the optimal time, like October, November, March, and April.

Can you Get Fuel on the Island?
Fraser Island has a fuel station located at the general store beside the K’Gari Beach Resort.
Moreton Island is very limited and you can get some fuel at Bulwer. But they only sell them in 20 litre drums and you have to ring before you go over to make sure they have it available.
Either way, you’ll be spending about 2 to 3 dollars a litre to purchase.

Is there Phone Service?
Yes, there is phone and data service on both. However, there are limitations or blank spots in the National Park, camping areas and remote zones.
While the sim provider won’t matter too much, Telstra will have better availability.
Most of your Wi-Fi and Data access will be around Resorts and restaurants. The Wi-Fi availability will mostly be for resort guests or an extra charge.

Are there Dingo’s?
Dingo’s are living on both Moreton and Fraser Island, but the population and dingo related issues are more prominent on Fraser. They are predators and it’s always best to be Dingo Safe. This means:
- Never leave children alone and Adults are better in pairs
- Keep your distance
- Please never run away from them (Just Back up slowly).
