1. Hamilton Island

Nestled in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, Hamilton Island is a place where you can truly escape the mundane city life. With a population of just over 1,200 people, the island has an intimate and close-knit community that welcomes visitors from around the world.

Its stunning natural beauty is a sight to behold, with clear waters and lush greenery that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into paradise. Tourists will often stay at Hamilton vs Airlie Beach for closer access to the Whitsunday Island and a more “Holiday” feel.

But it’s such a large Island, that the Primary mode of transport is by Golf Carts. These can be hired from the airport or the Ferry terminal.

How to get there?

Hamilton Island would have to be one of the more accessible islands, with multiple ways to get there. Since it’s inbuilt with its own Airport, you can fly direct from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane or connect through there from other cities.

Apart from that, local ferries or Day Trip Tours will leave Airlie Beach from the Port of Airlie and Shute Harbour several times a day. This is generally your cheapest option and the most popular.

Alternatively, Hamilton Air will leave from Airlie Beach, Proserpine, or Mackay Airport and drop you on the Island. Along with private flights serviced on a case-by-case basis.

Is there accommodation?

With over ten different resort options to choose from, you can rest assured that you’ll be able to find accommodations that suit your needs. Think relaxing getaway or an action-packed adventure, or you could even plan a 5 day itinerary in Airlie with a night stay on the Island for some variety.

Both times I’ve stayed at Hamo, it’s been at the Reef View Hotel. As a high-rise hotel, it tends to be on the cheaper side with the features of a luxury apartment. The view each morning over Catseye Beach is impressive, but ALWAYS keep your balcony doors closed, or the cockatoos will come inside.

It also help to understand the weather patterns and help you pick the best time to visit the Whitsunday region.

2. Whitsunday Island

The whole group of Islands off the coast of Airlie Beach is called the Whitsunday Islands. However, trying not to confuse the situation, there is one particular Island named Whitsunday Island.

Interesting fact, thousands of tourists will visit the Whitsunday Island daily, and stay at the multitude of accommodations in Airlie Beach

Why, you ask?

Because it’s where Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet is located, and both are definitely worth visiting. Once you arrive at the beach, you’ll be blown away by the crystal-clear waters, silky white sand, and lush tropical scenery.

It’s famous worldwide, and along with the swirling sandbar patterns of the Hill Inlet lookout, it’s known as one of the best beaches to visit in the state

How to get there?

There are several ways to get to Whitehaven from Airlie Beach, but it will require a boat tour, hiring your own boat, or a helicopter tour. These can be organised seven days a week.

Another option is to take a scenic flight, where you’ll get a bird’s eye view of Whitehaven Beach’s pristine white sand and crystal-clear waters. This can be a great choice if you’re strapped for time and still want to see it.

But, I do recommend looking into the conditions that make an excellent time to book your flight

Is there accommodation?

Despite being a world-renowned hotspot, Whitehaven Beach is largely undeveloped, with NO permanent residential population. There are a few National Park camping sites that you can book here, with picnic Tables and environmental toilets.

However, you’ll need to bring all your other supplies with you, for the length of your stay.

The views from Hill Inlet are totally worth visiting Whitehaven Beach for.

3. Day Dream Island

Have you ever heard of Daydream Island? If not, allow me to introduce you to one of the most stunning places in the world. This island is located in the Whitsunday area and is one of the closest to Airlie Beach. With a population of only 100, it may seem like the island is deserted, but don’t be fooled!

It’s just 30 minutes from the mainland and part of the Molle Group of Islands in the Whitsundays. It was initially named West Molle in 1881 but was re-named Daydream in the 1930s when the tourist resort was established.

It’s popular for its living coral lagoon that wraps around the resort. Can you believe it contains 1.5 million litres of water and hundreds of underwater creatures to check out? Consequently, this is very popular and an exceptional learning platform for kids.

How to get there?

Getting there is simple with the same ferry leaving Shute Harbour or Port of Airlie, which will transfer through Day Dream Island before Hamilton Island. Apart from that, you have an option with Hamilton Island Air, but these will be by Helicopter and obviously with a higher price tag.

➡  Compare prices for Tours HERE with GYG.

I’ve taken a day trip to Day Dream Island previously, and it was easy catching the ferry and just walking around doing your own thing on the Island. We watched the fish feeding display, sipped on a few cocktails, and hung out in the pool.

Although, if you want some exercise, the Island is small enough that you can walk the length in 10 to 20 minutes

4. Hayman Island

Hayman Island is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Despite being a small island, it boasts a vibrant and diverse ecosystem, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers.

The island is inhabited by only a handful of locals, ensuring a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere for visitors.

Whitsunday Island

How to get there?

Getting to Hayman Island is using the ferry transfer from either Hamilton Island or Shute Harbour, which takes you across the crystal-clear waters of the Whitsundays right to your resort.

Is there accommodation?

Yes, The Intercontinental Hayman Island Resort is located on Hayman Island and is more of a private luxury-style resort accommodation compared to Hamilton Island. It’s a secluded piece of paradise that will surprise and amaze you with its natural beauty.

You have a crescent-shaped cover for your water activities and a beautiful white sandy beach for that much-needed relaxation time. You can experience some of nature’s greatest assets while snorkelling, diving, or trying out the heated spa.

However, if the accommodation is a little out of your price range, I have often seen Great Barrier Reef tours that visit nearby for snorkelling, without needing to stay.

5. Long Island

Long Island is the closest island to the mainland, but it will take slightly longer to get there from Shute Harbour. As the name suggests, it is 9km long but not very wide at 400m.

The island consists of mainly National Park areas, but with this comes lots of walking trails for you to discover. This is perfect for those trying to escape reality, find secluded bays and coral reefs that hardly get seen by the general public.

It might not be as famous as some of the other Whitsunday Islands, but this can only work in your favour to the isolation.

How to get there?

Now the question is, how do you get there? Luckily, there are multiple options for ferries and also helicopter transfers from Proserpine, Coral Sea Marina at Airlie Beach, or Hamilton Island.

The ferry requires tidal control, but you can chat with the hotel beforehand if you need that.

A separate local ferry is available for the Palm Bay Resort, which leaves twice a day from Shute Harbour in Airlie and return.

Is there accommodation?

Lucky for you, Long Island’s Elysian retreat is just what the doctor ordered. Stay in your own oceanfront villa overlooking the beach. And with only ten rooms available, you know there aren’t going to be many people around.

The Palm Bay Resort is another option on Long Island, but it is also highlighted because it’s child-free. At any rate, you have bungalows, bures, villas, or suites available for you to choose from.

6. Hook Island

Hook Island is where you’ll be able to explore the incredible marine life that resides in the Great Barrier Reef.

Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or a first-time visitor, there’s something for you to discover on a trip to Hook Island. But the Island itself is almost uninhabited and known for its coral growth and colours.

How to get there?

There are a few ways to reach Hook Island, with boat trips and tours being the most popular. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even hire your own private boat and make your way to Hook Island yourself!

It’s home to some of the best snorkelling sites in Queensland, but the day’s weather conditions will determine which sites you’re going to visit, and you won’t specifically be able to book to Hook Island.

Is there accommodation?

Sorry, there’s no accommodation on Hook Island, and only used as a snorkeling destination.

Whitsunday Island

Is the Whitsundays a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

The Whitsunday Islands is part of the Great Barrier Reef and is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site. It makes Airlie Beach worth visiting if you’re looking for stunning beaches, crystal-clear water, and unparalleled natural beauty.
