➡ 1. Travel by Plane

Since Airlie Beach is a small town, getting there by Plane or flying needs a domestic flight into Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast Airport). However, the town of Proserpine is about 30 to 40 minutes’ drive away from Airlie and will require other transfers to get to your accommodation.

If you’re already travelling in Australia, you have one or two domestic flights a day leaving from Brisbane, Cairns, Sydney, or Melbourne that can fly you directly into the Proserpine (Whitsunday) Airport. However, international flights or other internal cities will need a connecting flight from one of these major cities and possibly involve an overnight stay.

So, you’re now at the Proserpine Airport, how do you get to your Airlie Beach accommodation?

1. Shuttle Services

Firstly, a couple of Shuttle Bus services drive back and forth from the Proserpine Airport constantly throughout the day. These will link up to the incoming and outgoing flights, so they run regularly.

2. Car Hire

Your second option is to hire your own car from the Proserpine Airport.

Not only do I think that it’s incredibly convenient to pick up your rental car from the airport upon arrival, but it also one of the best ways to get around Airlie and gives you the freedom to explore everything the area has to offer at your own pace.

3. Taxi or Uber

Your last option would be for a Taxi, and yes, they are an option from this Airport. Although, probably one of the more expensive choices costing over $100AUD for a 40 Minute ride.

Also, note that a couple of Ubers are available, but these aren’t as “Available” as a taxi ride.

➡ 2. Travel by Car

Who doesn’t love a good road trip? And when it comes to exploring the Queensland coast, I think there’s no better way to do it than with a car at your disposal.

But, there are plenty of things to consider when planning a road trip of this size and I have lots of tips mentioned in this article here.

On the plus side, not only will it get you there more cost-effectively, but this stunning stretch of coastline is dotted with charming places along the way. And, Airlie is a high-lighted stop!

Additionally, providing the flexibility and convenience of transport once you’re there. With hire cars available in major cities like Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne (or smaller towns en route), you can easily rent one and embark on a road trip like no other.

Driving along the Queensland Coast is a must-do activity, with an array of stunning beaches, hidden waterfalls, and pristine national parks to marvel at. Whether you have two or three weeks to spare, you’ll have plenty of time to soak up Queensland’s natural beauty and explore the iconic landmarks.

Maybe you don’t have that much time to spare? Well, fear not, with this 10 day Brisbane to Airlie Planner here! From stopping by picturesque coastal towns to diving in the Great Barrier Reef, there’s no shortage of sights to see and things to do.

➡ 3. Travel by Bus

Bus Travel requires booking a seat on the Greyhound Australia Bus Service. This will leave Brisbane, Cairns, or anywhere along the Queensland coastal network. And conveniently departing a couple of times a day, for you to choose a time that fits your schedule.

Sure, from Brisbane, it may take about 19 hours to get to Airlie, but think about all the beautiful scenery you’ll see along the Queensland coast. Plus, you can sit back, relax, and let someone else do the driving.

At least you’ll be dropped off in the heart of Airlie Beach at 26 The Cv Rd, and it’s easy to get to your accommodation by taxi or walking.

I understand that sometimes taking a bus may not be the fastest and most convenient way to travel but hear me out. For backpackers, a long-term (Hop on & off) bus pass can be a cost-efficient option to explore the Queensland Coast, especially smaller towns that may not have airports or train stations.

➡ 4. Travel by Train

You can travel by Train using Queensland Rail or the Spirit of Queensland, which is relatively easy but requires an organisation plan similar to flying. With that said, a convenient route is offered between Brisbane and Cairns, and the closest stop to Airlie will once again be Proserpine at 6 Hinschen Street.

While trains will depart a few times a week ( Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri & Sat) from Brisbane, it leaves around 1:30 pm and gets into Proserpine at 5 am the following day. However, you have a convenient Rail Bus that will transfer you from there to a few locations in Airlie Beach (no hotel Drop off).

Proserpine & Whitsunday Coffee

These Railbus stops include the Cannonvale shopping centre, Coral Sea Marina, Airlie Beach South bus stop, Coconut Grove, Port of Airlie bus stop, Jubilee Pocket Tavern, and Shute Harbour Jetty. Thus, you’ll pick the drop-off closest to your accommodation.

From here, you can decide to either hire a car to get around Airlie, use taxis or walk. Obviously, this will depend on what activities you plan to do and how you can get there.

While Train travel can be cost-effective and a less stressful way to travel, it’s not suited to everyone. Personally, with the extra time and transfers needed, it would be my last option to choose.

Where to Stay?

There are a few things to consider when it comes to finding the perfect place to stay in Airlie Beach. First and foremost, think about what you plan to do during your stay. Are you looking to relax on the beach or participate in some of the many water sports available?

➡  Compare Airlie Accommodation HERE with Booking.com.

Next, consider your mode of transportation. A car will provide more flexibility in terms of location, but walking distance to activities and restaurants may be more important if you rely solely on your feet.

If you’re a backpacker on a budget, then you’ll want to check out the cheap options in the heart of the city. With tons of bars and live music, you’ll never be bored.

But, if you’re looking for something more luxurious, go for the accommodation with ocean Bay views. And finally, if you’re willing to venture further out of town and have access to a car, then the budget and quiet options may be just what you’re looking for.

FAQ’s – Common Questions?

How to Get Around town?

As I touched on this above, when it comes to getting around Airlie Beach, one of the best ways is by having your own car. With the freedom to go where you want, when you want, it allows you to make the most of your time and discover all the hidden gems the region has to offer.

With that said, I found some amazing tour options, including hotel pickup. This included Whitehaven Beach and our Scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef. Plus, this option removes the stress of planning every little detail of your trip, but it needs some research to find the tours that include this.

The Whitsunday Transit Public Bus runs back of forth every 20 minutes and through the main streets of Airlie Beach to Shute Harbour. It’s a fantastic option for those on a budget and without a strict schedule.

At the end of the day, if you’re staying somewhere close to town, then walking around will not be too much of an issue. Truthfully, the main street is only two or three blocks, and you can walk it in five to ten minutes.

If all else fails, you can call a taxi or jump in one from the main street to get you wherever you need to go!

Best Time to visit?

Honestly, Airlie Beach is a bustling tourist hub at any time of year, particularly in the summertime (December/January) and school holidays. However, if you’re planning a trip to Airlie Beach, then I think the best time of year to visit is in the shoulder seasons in Autumn and Spring. This includes March to May and September to November!

If you’re wondering why, then let me break it down for you. Not only is the weather still warm and pleasant during these seasons, but you’ll also avoid the crowds, pesky stingers, and humidity from the hot summer season.

How many days should you stay?

After visiting several times over the years, I think Five days in Airlie Beach might just be the perfect amount of time to experience all that this stunning region has to offer. This includes snorkelling trips to Scenic Flights, Whitehaven Beach, and seeing the swirling sands of Hill Inlet.

But, if you have more time to spare, there’s so much more to see beyond the popular tourist attractions.

Airlie Beach Vs Cairns?

Do you want to visit the Great Barrier Reef but are stuck on which destination to choose between Airlie Beach or Cairns? Let me tell you a secret: they are both amazingly similar when it comes to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Life!

Yes, both destinations offer the same picturesque surroundings, crystal-clear waters, and an abundance of marine life. So, don’t worry if you’re short on time, as one visit to either Airlie Beach or Cairns will be enough to experience the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef.

With that said, I believe it’s the experiences that you have outside of the Great Barrier Reef that make all the difference. The Whitsundays is nothing short of remarkable, but a perfect Cairns itinerary takes the cake when it comes to the sheer number of things to do and see.
