When planning an island escape from Brisbane, Moreton Island vs Stradbroke Island is a comparison many tourists and first-time visitors find themselves stuck on. Both islands offer stunning beaches, wildlife encounters, and a true escape from the city, but they deliver very different experiences.
The biggest challenge is understanding those differences before you book. Questions around transport, costs, day trips versus overnight stays, 4WD requirements, and what you can realistically see without a car often leave visitors confused.
As a local to Brisbane and visited both islands multiple times, I’ve put together this side-by-side comparison to help you decide which one suits you best. This guide breaks down the pros, cons, and key differences so you can confidently choose between Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island.

Moreton Island Vs North Stradbroke Island – Which one is better to visit?
Both Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island have pristine beaches and phenomenal views. Therefore, deciding which one is worth visiting all comes down to what sort of adventure you’re looking for.
Thanks to Tangalooma Wrecks, Moreton Island is the best spot for snorkelling and diving near Brisbane. But a day trip to the resort, the wildlife and the Dolphin feeding program are also big highlights.
On the other hand, North Stradbroke Island is ideal for its surfing beaches, inbuilt community, diving and beachside camping.

To help you decide better, here’s the pros and cons of each island.
Moreton Island
I’ve been to Moreton Island more than ten times over the past 20 years, making me a Moreton Island expert, I guess? Let me share with you some of my insights about the island:
Pros
- Accessible location: Close to Brisbane and easily accessible by ferry. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the island from the mainland port.
- Haven for snorkelers: Have a perfect snorkelling spot in the Tangalooma Wrecks, shallow enough to allow beginners to experience it.
- Wildlife and marine life interactions: Offers various activities that let visitors interact with wildlife on land, by air, and underwater.
- Beach swimming: Surrounded by pristine and clear-water beaches that allow visitors of any age to have a fun and unforgettable beach experience.
- Wild Dolphin Feeding: Every night, the dolphins come to the shores, and the Eco program allows you to feed them a specialty-prepared diet.
- Resort Facilities: The Tangalooma Island resort enables visitors to stay without camping

Cons
- Crowds: Local and overseas tourists flock to the island, especially during weekends and public & school holidays.
- No public transportation system: Unless you bring your own car or purchase a guided tour, you can only walk to specific areas on the island.
- Limited access: Tangalooma Wrecks’ visitors cannot access the resort’s facilities unless they have pre-booked a Casual Visitor Pass.
- Pricey: Ferry transport fares can be pretty pricey, especially if you’re bringing your own vehicle to the island.

North Stradbroke Island
Having this beautiful sandy beach near the mainland is a blessing for any local or tourists who want to get away from the city. Here are some of my thoughts to help you choose this one:
Pros
- Easy island getaway: Close to and easily accessible from Brisbane (Cleveland) via ferry. It only takes about 45 minutes to travel from the mainland to the island.
- Best for surfers: Certain beaches have large or medium waves, which are great for surfing.
- Well-developed community: Home to 2000 locals, giving visitors easy access to grocery stores, restaurants, local shops, and cafes.
- Several beach options: Guests can access several beach locations, each catering to their different needs.
- Public transportation buses: Getting to and from certain areas on the island is easy and convenient because of their public transportation system. Guests can also rent a car, a 2-wheel vehicle, or a scooter on the island.
- Diving Locations: Manta Bommie is one of my favourite dive sites near Brisbane.

Cons
- Crowds: Since it’s closest to the mainland, there are many people who day-tour or stay for extended periods on the holidays.
- Tourist-targeted prices: Being close to the mainland also resulted in higher costs of accommodations, food, and activities. (Much like a lot of Queensland Islands)
- Noise: Having lots of cars, tourists, attractions, and activities result in a noisy environment.

If you’re looking for something that better for the budget, then look into the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and use your GoCard (Public Transport) and the ferry to get around.
Where are they located?
Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island are both situated off the coast of Southeast Queensland, Brisbane. Both are relatively close to each other and easily accessible from the mainland via a quick ferry ride. This makes them a perfect spot for beachside day trips from the city.
It only takes about 75 minutes of a ferry ride to reach Moreton Island from the mainland. And only 45 minutes to arrive at the drop-off pier in North Stradbroke Island.

How do you get to each Island?
Moreton Island
There are two different ferry boats that you can ride depending on which part of the island you want to go to. One directly drops you off at the Tangalooma Island Resort, where all resort facilities and amenities are, and the other drops you off the other side of the Tangalooma Wrecks.
➡ Find Moreton Island Tours HERE with GYG, Or HERE with Viator.
I’ve travelled both ways and choosing between them depends on what you want to do. However, organised tours can help with getting around the Island or package deals for extra savings at the resort.

The passenger ferry that leads to the resort (including day cruises) departs from 220 Holt Street Wharf in Pinkenba, Brisbane, and drops off passengers at the Tangalooma Jetty. It operates four times a day, and you choose times based on your schedule and how long you are staying.
If you’re planning to bring your 4WD vehicle (Needs a Driving Permit) or would only like to visit the Tangalooma Wrecks, you can ride the MiCat passenger or vehicle ferry that departs from the port of Brisbane.
This is one of the best ways to get to Moreton if you just want to hang out on the beach for the day. But there is no access to the resort facilities (30 30-minute walk away)

North Stradbroke Island
You can reach North Stradbroke Island by boat or water taxi, as they call it. Book a passenger boat through the Stradbroke Flyer or Sealink, which departs from Toondah Harbour in Cleveland and docks at Dunwich.
➡ Compare Straddie Tours HERE With GYG, or HERE with Viator.
These two boat companies operate up to ten times a day and sometimes more on school holidays. But, there are also options for organised tours, especially if you want someone else to take care of the logistics for you.
Once you arrive at Dunwich, you can either drive your own car or ride a public bus service to the resort, which is up 18km away from the drop-off location. You can also rent a car, 2-wheel vehicle, or scooter in advance for your private service on the island.
Taking the passenger ferry and using the Public Bus is one of the cheapest ways to get Stradbroke. It’s even just slightly cheaper than Moreton.
Note: Four wheel driving on the beach will require a Permit, but not if your driving on the sealed roads

Do they have accommodation?
Moreton Island
Tangalooma Resort boasts many attractions and offers a range of accommodations to cater to their guests different tastes and budgets. If you want to save some money, I recommend booking a Run of House room or a standard hotel room (This is what I always book). However, just because they’re budget-friendly doesn’t mean they lack facilities and restricted balcony views.
➡ Compare prices for Moreton Island accommodation HERE with Booking.com
Alternatively, there are more available if you want accommodation that has added convenience, larger space and luxury. This includes deluxe hotel rooms, resort units, family suites, beachfront villas, deep blue apartments, holiday homes, and penthouses.

North Stradbroke Island
Likewise, North Stradbroke Island offers accommodations that fit every budget.
Camping grounds are available for DIY travellers. We pitched a tent at Flinders Beach during one of our visits and are planning to try out the alternate sites on the Main Beach!
➡ Compare prices for Stradbroke Island accommodation HERE with Booking.com
Glamping tents, hotel rooms, serviced apartments, and resorts are available at your convenience.
You can read my review on the Anchorage Resort , which was a budget-friendly hotel in front of Home Beach we enjoyed! However, if you fancy a luxurious beachfront villa, you can find some of these at the Point Lookout (the more popular area on Straddy).

Which is more expensive to visit?
Truthfully, I think most islands located along the Queensland coast are expensive to visit, and I’ve been to most of them. As a result, neither Moreton nor Stradbroke Island are an exception.
However, there are ways to make them cheaper with a bit of planning. Obviously, this includes organising your time schedule, what you want to do and how you plan to get around.
This means that while Matt and I have a Four-wheel drive vehicle to get there, we sometimes opt for day trip tours when we want a quick getaway. Since Ferry transfers and costs associated with cars are more expensive, we will save that money when staying for longer periods.

What are the best things to do?
Moreton Island
Moreton Island offers various outdoor activities that both kids and adults can enjoy. These obviously vary depending on how you get there and how you’re getting around. But here are some of the activities, just to give you an idea:
- Join a quad biking/ATV tour to explore not only the famous spots on the island but also some of its secluded areas and hidden gems not known to day visitors.
- Ride a helicopter or go parasailing to get a 360-degree of the island.
- Relax and book a spa service while taking in the stunning view of the beach.
- Go to the Jetty at night and feed a wild dolphin a fish.
- Rent a transparent kayak and explore around the wrecks without getting wet!

➡ Find Moreton Island Tours HERE with GYG, Or HERE with Viator.
- Experience sand tobogganing for a rush of adrenaline.
- Snorkel at the Tangalooma Wrecks and witness a vast, healthy marine life underneath them.
- Walk around until you see several wildlife animals like dugongs, sea turtles, Kookaburras, Pelicans, migrating whales, and dingos.

- Hike Mount Tempest and capture the stunning view on the summit.
- Spot the war remnants scattered across the island.
- Take a dip in the champagne pools and watch how the waves crash over the rocks.

North Stradbroke Island
If you enjoy various water activities, North Stradbroke Island is the place for you! To give you an idea, here are some of the activities you can enjoy throughout your stay:
- Go fishing at the Amity Pier with the locals.
- Visit every beach spot on the island, particularly Main Beach, Home Beach, Cylinder Beach, Deadman’s Beach, and Frenchman’s Beach, which has translucent waters.
- See various wildlife, such as koalas, kangaroos, whales, sea birds, manta rays, frolicking dolphins, and sea turtles in certain parts of the island.
- Take a break and go freshwater swimming at Myora Springs or Brown Lake.

- Get up close with manta rays and Nudibranch when you go scuba diving at Manta Bommie.
- Experience beach camping at Flinders Beach and Main Beach.
- Ride with the waves while surfing at the Main Beach or South Gorge swimming area. Cylinder Beach is also an option for smaller waves, which is best for bodyboarding.
- Walk along the sandy walking trail next to the Blue Lake.
- Bring your own toboggan board and do sand tobogganing at Deadman’s Beach.
- Take a relaxing morning walk at the North Gorge or South Gorge boardwalk.
- Swim at the rock pools in the Frenchman’s Beach.

How many days do you need in each?
Moreton Island
You can spend at least 2-3 days to fully enjoy the activities and absorb the stunning views at Moreton Island. That way, you can experience certain activities that day visitors don’t have access to, like late-night beach strolls, stargazing, sunsets/sunrises and wildlife encounters.
➡ Find Moreton Island Tours HERE with GYG, Or HERE with Viator.
Staying overnight is also the best way to enjoy camping and explore less travelled areas on the island.
However, if you’re tight on budget, day trips are also possible and give you enough time to visit the hotspots on the island. For day tours, it’s better to join organized tours than to travel on your own to save on ferry transfer fares and other expenses.

North Stradbroke Island
North Stradbroke Island is relatively larger than Moreton Island. Hence, spending more days on it is ideal to get your money’s worth. A 4-day trip would allow you to take enough time exploring each spot and experiencing various activities.
➡ Search Stradbroke Island Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
It’s possible for a day visit, but there are option for organized tours to save costs getting around, or you can do it on your own. This includes seeing the Point Lookout beach and shopping district, Cylinder Beach or Amity Point. Although, you won’t have the opportunity to explore secluded places on the island unless you take a 4WD vehicle.

FAQ’s – Common Questions?
Do you need to hire a car?
Moreton Island is pretty accessible from the mainland, but once you step foot on the island, you would be forced to walk on foot to explore the whole area (unless you bring your own car).
➡Find your favourite brand & compare prices for your Rental Car HERE
If you want to tour the entire island conveniently and don’t want to miss a single spot, having a car you can drive is necessary. However, if you don’t enjoy walking that much, you can book guided tours from Brisbane.
On the other hand, hiring a car in North Stradbroke Island might not be necessary since the island has a public transport system. However, if you don’t want to be limited on which areas you can access, bringing your own car or renting one on the island would be the best option.

How big are both the Islands?
There are Four sand islands in South East Queensland. This includes:
- The largest being Fraser Island
- Second, is Stradbroke Island
- third being Moreton Island
- And fourth is Bribie Island.
Moreton Island is 186 square kilometres in size. It has only the one resort, various camping sites, and four-wheel driving tracks around the Island. The more popular areas are on the West Coast of the Island, so the East Coast has fewer crowds.
North Stradbroke Island is 38 kilometres long and 11 kilometres wide, with an inbuilt community of over 2000 residents on the northern end. The island provides public transportation systems, so it is easy for visitors to tour around on their own.

Are there Sharks on the Islands?
Different varieties of sharks, the most common ones being reef sharks and wobbegong, swim along the wrecks on Moreton Island occasionally. Despite that, there’s limited risk while swimming or snorkelling as these species are generally not interested in humans.
Meanwhile, Great White Sharks, Grey Nurse and Bull Sharks cruise along the Queensland Coast but venture through more open water areas. I’ve been diving with some of these near Stradbroke Island, but there is limited risk and no area where daily tourists are likely to be.
Some of the things you can do to avoid encounters with sharks are to avoid swimming at night, alone, and in unsupervised areas.

Which has more tourists?
North Stradbroke and Moreton Islands are both known as attractive and popular getaways for local and overseas tourists.
In my opinion, Moreton Island became famous for international tourists because of the Tangalooma Wrecks. This particular attraction is so popular that people started referring to the island as “Tangalooma Island.” Additionally, the popularity of Moreton Island skyrocketed when it became the filming location of the live-action movie Scooby-Doo (Staring Freddy Prince Jr & Sarah Michelle Geller).
Despite that, North Stradbroke Island remains the most visited site by local travellers. One major reason is that it’s the closest island to the mainland. But more reasons extend to many accessible camping sites, convenient facilities and numerous attractions and activities.

Are both safe to visit?
In general, when concerned about physical safety with crowd-driven incidents like pickpockets, unprovoked attention, and loss of personal property – Neither Island will pose a threat.
However, dangers involving water safety and using vehicles on either island can inherit certain risks. This includes:
- Not wearing a wetsuit for Wreck snorkelling and cutting yourself.
- Maneuvering around other boats in the water.
- Falling of the Quad Bikes ( I’ve seen someone break an arm doing this)
- Four-wheel driving without experience or recovery gear.
- Not taking suitable footwear for some activities.
- Swimming alone or at night.
On all of these occasions, you should always follow advice from guides or talk to local people for current warnings. Additionally, know that lifeguards are limited on beaches, and it might not always be a good idea to go swimming.

Best Time of Year to Visit?
Both islands have generally warm tropical climates since they are situated off the coast of South East Queensland. That only means that visiting the islands any time of the year is totally possible.
But, if you want to best enjoy various water activities, visiting during the summer, from October through April, is the optimal time. It’s certainly when I would go when snorkelling the wrecks or swimming and temperatures from 24-35°C (but this is also the rainy season)

However, if you’re not a fan of summer heat, you can still visit during winter, from June through August. Surprisingly, this is my favourite time to visit for a weekend getaway to hang out in the resort and temps range from 15-24°C.
Although, If you’re not planning in advance, please check the weather forecasts before going to either island to avoid disappointment. That way, you would avoid the hassle of changing your plans due to unfortunate circumstances.

Do you need to look out for stingers or jellyfish?
While there are Jellyfish in most bodies of water around the world, the more dangerous ones, like the Irukandji or Box Jellyfish, prefer the warmer waters in North Queensland. This means you won’t find a lot of them in Southern Queensland.
In my diving and boating expeditions off South East Queensland, I’ve seen plenty of Jellyfish around in the ocean waters. While they can still sting you, they aren’t as deadly, but always best to admire from a distance.

Wrap Up!
Choosing between Moreton Island & North Stradbroke Island is already challenging for a local like me. So, I understand how much harder it is for first-time visitors like you. At the end of the day, the best island for you is the one that resonates the best with your personality, interests, and desire for adventure.
There are several things that set the two islands apart, but I hope this guide has helped in your decision-making. However, for more insights, check out my other Brisbane features to help plan and research for other itineraries, accommodation and things to do.
