Playa Del Carmen Vs Isla Mujeres, Which is better to visit?

The beautiful Quintana Roo region features plenty of top dream destinations, culture, beaches with clear blue waters and adventure! But today, I’m here to compare Playa Del Carmen and Isla Mujeres, to help you make the difficult decision of which to visit for your vacation.

In context, we visited the Yucatan Peninsula for a couple of weeks, but I tried to pack in as much as we could in a short period of time. It’s hard not to fall in love with all that the Mexican Coast has to offer, and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have experienced it firsthand.

But since that’s not all you need to choose, please read on to find my thoughts and comparisons on these two gems.

Which is better to visit, Playa Del Carmen or Isla Mujeres?

Personally, I really loved staying at Playa Del Carmen and Isla Mujeres, but choosing between them honestly comes down to what kind of holiday you’re after.  

Playa Del Carmen – a lively atmosphere and city life, with a plethora of shops, restaurants, attractions and nightlife to enjoy.  
Vs Isla Mujeres – a small island off the coast that inspires a laid-back itinerary for those seeking a peaceful retreat.  

Here is a quick table guide to help you see the differences:

I think you should choose Isla Mujeres if you:

• Want a chill island escape.
• Are a couple or family looking to unwind.
• Enjoy walkable towns and slow travel.
• Want swimmable beaches with calm water.
• Prefer fewer crowds and a more local feel.

I think you should choose Playa del Carmen if you:

• Want access to nightlife and modern amenities.
• Are planning multiple day trips, cenotes visits and excursions.
• Like a social scene or expat vibe.
• Want more accommodation and dining variety.
• Are traveling without a strict budget.

Just know it was Isla Mujeres that started my trip research and planning our daily Whale Shark tours, where you swim alongside these gentle giants of the sea.

But, after looking into the area more, Play Del Carmen attracted us with diving escapes, culture, cenotes and other interesting sites.

Of course, If you’re staying in Playa del Carmen, it’s totally possible to do a day trip or overnight to Isla Mujeres by taking the ferry from Cancun. While we thought it was worth staying on the Island, many travelers love combining both for a balance of activity and island relaxation.

What are the Pros and Cons of each?

Playa Del Carmen

I really loved our 5 Day Itinerary in Playa Del Carmen and fit in as much as we possibly could in that should amount of time.

✅ Pros:

• Central Location: Situated in the heart of the Riviera Maya. It’s an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions.
• Vibrant Nightlife: Playa offers a vigorous nightlife scene for the bar hoppers with various bars, nightclubs, and live entertainment.
• Accommodation choice: A broad range of options, from luxury properties to budget-friendly hotels.
• Shopping and Dining: With the famous Fifth Avenue, the city is a haven for shoppers and foodies, boasting local boutiques, international brands, and various culinary offerings.
• Beach Access: Fantastic beaches with crystalline waters are easily accessible, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

❌ Cons:

• Crowds: Being a popular tourist destination, Playa Del Carmen can feel crowded, especially during peak seasons, which is something to consider if seeking solitude.
• Seaweed Problem: At certain times of the year, sargassum seaweed influxes can affect the beaches and may impact beach activities. (Note: I had to walk through metres of it to get into a dive boat)
• Tourist-targeted Prices: With its tourist-centric economy, prices in Playa Del Carmen can be higher in comparison to other areas.
• Noise Levels: Due to the electrical nightlife and urban setting, some visitors may find the noise levels to be disruptive, particularly in the evening.

Isla Mujeres

While I did stay on the island for a week to do a few days whale shark swimming, I would recommend a 3 day Itinerary in Isla Mujeres for your first-time or to see the highlights

✅ Pros:

• Tranquil Surroundings: Isla Mujeres offers a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, ideal for a more serene vacation.
• Unique Transportation: Renting a golf cart provides a fun way to explore the island at your own pace.
• Beautiful Beaches: Home to Playa Norte, voted one of the best beaches in the world, which is picturesque and less crowded.
• Rich Marine Life: Isla Mujeres is famous for its excellent access to snorkelling and diving, and you must get to the MUSA underwater museum.
• Cultural venture: The island’s small-town feel allows for a more authentic Mexican exploration with friendly locals and cultural festivities.

❌ Cons:

• Limited Nightlife: Isla Mujeres holds much quieter nightlife events, which may not appeal to those eager to party. 
• Small Island Logistics: Due to the island’s smaller size, options for shopping are more limited than on the mainland.
• Dependency on Ferry Service: Transport to and from the island relies on the ferry service. 
• Weather: Even the weather can cause operational changes, potentially impacting travel plans.
• Occasional Overcrowding from Day-Trippers: While generally more relaxed, the island can get quite busy with tourists coming from Cancun and other nearby areas.

Where are they both located?

Both Playa Del Carmen and Isla Mujeres reside in the Riviera Maya, along the Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s Quintana Roo region. You can click the Map Directory Link for a visual, or to open or apply directions from your location.

Playa Del Carmen is conveniently situated on the Mexican mainland. Just a short one-hour drive from the Cancun International Airport, will take you directly to the heart of Playa’s bustling streets and peaceful beaches.  

On the other hand, Isla Mujeres is an island paradise that requires a short but scenic ferry ride from Cancun. It’s just a fifteen-minute drive from the airport and another 20-minute ferry ride to the island. 

Whether you choose the ease of getting to Playa or the adventure of travelling to Isla, both locations have their own unique set of wonders.

How can you get there?

While Playa del Carmen is readily reachable by land transport, the ferry ride to Isla Mujeres adds an element of charm to the start of your island getaway.

Playa Del Carman

If you’re arriving at Cancun airport, there are private transfers, shuttles or the Autobuses ADO (public transport) to Playa del Carmen. This easy access is impressive if you want to indulge in the multitude of activities available on the mainland.

For those who prefer the flexibility and privacy of personal transport, you can hire a car at Cancun International Airport and drive yourself, allowing for a private tour of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The drive to Playa Del Carmen is particularly scenic and well-signposted, ensuring a pleasant journey along the coast, with the breathtaking backdrop of the Caribbean Sea.  

Isla Mujeres

For Isla Mujeres, you can catch a private transfer or shuttle, or you might even consider a taxi, especially within a fifteen-minute distance. From there, you have the option of catching the Ultramar Ferry at Puerto Juarez (this is what we took), or choosing one of the other ferries operating out of the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Whichever starting point you select, the journey to Isla Mujeres will take about 15-20 minutes. During the ferry ride, you will be treated to spectacular views of the magnificent waters as well as the inviting horizon.

Do you need to hire a car in either?

Playa Del Carmen

In Playa Del Carmen, having a car to explore beyond the immediate vicinity is convenient. However, for my trip, a rental wasn’t necessary as our hotel was conveniently located within walking distance of the shops, and the excursions we planned offered hotel pickup services.

Additionally, we avoided the hassle of hiring a car, choosing to book a taxi instead when we took our day trip to the Xplor Park, situated a short distance from the city. Obviously, this all comes down to the activities you want to do and the most convenient and budget-friendly way to get there. 

Isla Mujeres

When it comes to navigating the island of Isla Mujeres, many visitors choose to rent golf carts, which is an ideal way to explore the island at a leisurely pace. (Another option is walking around from your hotel).

Luckily, these carts can be rented by the hour or for an entire day. And since it’s 7.5 kilometres from one side of the island to the other, it’s an excellent way to access all corners of Isla Mujeres. Not only that, but driving them gives you a whole summer, island vacation feel!

What are the Best things to see or do?

Playa Del Carmen

• Stroll along Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), the exciting streets lined with shops, bars, and restaurants.
• Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum to learn about the iconic Mexican artist’s life and work.
• Explore the fascinating underground rivers and caves at Rio Secreto.
• Dive or snorkel in the lovely coral reefs of the Great Mesoamerican Reef
• Day trips to ancient Mayan ruins. This includes the UNESCO Chichen Itza or getting to Ek Balam & Cenote Maya Park.
• Enjoy the thrilling rides and cultural shows at the eco-archaeological park, Xcaret.
• Relax and unwind at one of the trendy beach clubs, such as Mamita’s Beach Club.

• Swim with Whale Sharks: This is a unique chance to snorkel with these gentle giants, the largest fish in the world, during the summer months.
• Snorkel in Garrafon Natural Reef Park: Discover the rousing underwater world at this famous snorkelling spot.
• Tour the Tortugranja Turtle Farm: Learn about and interact with sea turtles at this conservation centre.
• Spend time at Playa Norte: Relax on the enchanting white sands and enjoy the calm, shallow waters.

Because of our budget-conscious approach, we successfully secured comfortable accommodations in Playa Del Carmen. The city boasts an array of lodging options, from luxurious all-inclusive resorts to more modest boutique hotels and privately rented condos.

Therefore, if your dream vacation is to indulge in the extensive services of an all-inclusive resort, a smaller cozy hotel or even a vacation rental, then Playa Del Carmen will not disappoint. It’s worth noting that while hotels here offer greater variety, they may also come with a heftier price tag for luxurious stays. 

Isla Mujeres

In our quest for affordable yet comfortable lodging, we discovered a few just off Playa Centro. This hotel was not only budget-friendly but it was also located within walking distance of the Ultramar Ferry. This made travelling to the hotel simple and low-cost with transfers!

Overall, the hotels in Isla Mujeres are generally more wallet-friendly, but they may offer fewer amenities and services. For those looking for an energetic atmosphere, then check out the hotels on Playa Norte. Although, with it being a more popular beach, they do come with a higher price. 

Alternatively, if you desire peace and quiet, the hotels in the southern part of Isla Mujeres are known to be like a secluded retreat.  

Which one is more expensive to visit?

Costs can be somewhat similar when comparing a vacation in Isla Mujeres or Playa Del Carmen, but there are some slight differences. 

Playa Del Carmen

Prices can be higher when dining or being entertained in Playa Del Carmen due to the variety and upmarket options. Yet, amidst these, are numerous budget-friendly eateries and bars. These provide delicious local and international cuisine at a fraction of the cost, especially outside the main tourist area. 

Activities, too, range from exclusive private tours to community-guided excursions, which offer more authentic views of Riviera Maya and can be kinder to your wallet. Apart from that, you always have the option to tour around on your own.

Isla Mujeres

In terms of accommodation, Isla Mujeres typically offers more budget-friendly options, as the island is home to fewer all-inclusive resorts. We stayed in a relatively priced hotel overlooking Playa Centro beach, which was within walking distance to the ferry and still convenient to the shops. 

However, if you choose to stay around Playa Norte Beach, know this tends to be a little higher. Apart from that, you can find a range of charming and more intimate boutique hotels and guesthouses, often at a lower price than the larger resorts.

Which has better beaches?

Playa Del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is known around the world for its beautiful beaches, which can get crowded, especially those close to downtown. Additionally, the beach clubs here are known for their party scene, presenting a different kind of seaside venture. This one is more energized and less tranquil compared to the easy-going islands. 

Also, at certain times of the year, beaches in Playa del Carmen can be affected by large accumulations of seaweed, detracting from the alluring beach atmosphere. Unfortunately, our visit in July was met with this awful and smelly sargassum, which they were trying to remove with tractors.

Isla Mujeres

Its known that Playa Norte Beach on Isla Mujeres has been voted one of the best beaches in the world! Its white, powdery sand feels wonderful, while calm, sparkling waters invite you for a serene and picturesque swim.  

Unbelievable beauty captures your attention and encourages you to relax under the warm sun. Whether you’re there to unwind, paddle in the gentle waves, or simply soak in the scenic views. Playa Norte offers an idyllic beach that ensures a lasting holiday memory.

FAQ’s – Common Questions?

Where is the closest Airport?

The Cancun International Airport is the closest airport serving both Playa Del Carmen and Isla Mujeres. While this hub caters to most travellers’ needs with a range of international and domestic flights, Playa Del Carmen does have its own domestic airport. However, the frequency of flights and diversity of airlines are limited compared to Cancun.  

Therefore, flying into Cancun is often the most convenient and cost-effective option, especially when heading to Isla Mujeres, as the ferry port is a short drive from the airport. 

Are they both Safe to visit?

Safety is a common consideration for travellers, and during my stay, I felt secure in both Playa Del Carmen and Isla Mujeres. Although, I’m not a 20-year-old wandering the streets at night, either. 

However, incidents can occur in any popular tourist destination, and it’s essential to remain vigilant. 

You can reduce your risk by:

• Exercising common sense.
• Avoiding unlit areas after dark.
• Being aware of your surroundings.
• Keeping your belongings secure. 
• Staying attentive.

It’s crucial to note the country’s travel advisories before planning a trip to any international destination. Incidents in the past have been reported for high levels of crime and violence within the overall state of Quintana Roo.  

Therefore, adhere to recommended safety measures, and stay informed of any updates as your trip approaches.

What’s the food like?

Playa Del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a culinary delight for food lovers. Casual taquerias dot the streets, tempting you with the aroma of sizzling meats and freshly made tortillas. And, for those who prefer upscale dining, the city presents an array of fine dining.  

Innovative chefs fuse traditional Mexican flavours with international ones for a sublime and delightful meal. Some of my choices come from the all time favourite quesadilla, burritos and tacos, but especially loved the Ceviche (which I was only introduced to on the this trip). 

Isla Mujeres

There are not as many restaurants in Isla Mujeres, but there are many tasty delights to entice. Most are located around Avenida Miguel Hidalgo in the town centre, delivering authentic local cuisine with menus consisting of classic, flavourful and satisfying options like tacos, burgers, and sandwiches.  

The island is home to quaint breakfast cafés for a delightful start to your day (they just don’t open early). These eateries have a more laid-back style, but the flavours, freshness, and warmth you’ll encounter truly reflect the island’s charm.

Is there a difference in the Weather?

When considering the weather in Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen, travellers will find little variation as both bask in the same regional climate of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Expect to enjoy sunny skies and warm temperatures for much of the year. However, hurricane season lasts from June to November. 

Which has better Nightlife

Playa del Carmen is renowned for its dynamic nightlife with bars, lounges, and clubs that pulsate with energy until the early hours. It was impossible not to notice the lively spirit of Playa’s after-dark culture.  Coco Bongo is a prime hotspot, famous for its high-energy shows and enthusiastic crowds. 

Nightlife is far from absent in Isla Mujeres, also furnishing nightlife, at bars and restaurants, it’s just a quieter affair. The establishments offer a more relaxed atmosphere for those who prefer to unwind after a day in the sun. Try sipping drinks at the beach clubs or waterfront spots such as Zama Beach Club and enjoying the sunset.

Population?

Their population further underscores the distinction between Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen boasts a population exceeding 40,000 and is a rapidly growing city due to its tourist appeal and commercial development. This contributes to the city’s energetic and cosmopolitan atmosphere.  

In contrast, Isla Mujeres has a close-knit community of over 20,000. The island’s intimacy complements the tranquil charm and slower pace of life.

Concluding Playa Del Carmen vs Isla Mujeres, I think both offer unique and unforgettable experiences in Mexico. From the energetic life of Playa Del Carmen to the laid-back island scene that is Isla Mujeres. I fell in love with both places for different reasons and would highly recommend either one of them to anyone up for a tropical getaway.

However, if you’re really struggling to choose between the two, do as I did and try to make time for both. With their proximity to each other and easy transportation options, you could easily plan a trip that includes both!
