Fun 3 Day Isla Mujeres Itinerary for First-Timers in Mexico!

An exciting 3 day Isla Mujeres itinerary is exactly what most first-time visitors are searching for when planning a quick escape from Cancún. From turquoise water and white-sand beaches, Isla Mujeres packs a lot into a small, easy-to-navigate island.

The biggest issue for first-timers is deciding how to utilise your limited time. Should you book boat tours, hire a golf cart, or simply relax on Playa Norte? Many travellers also struggle to work out what’s walkable, what needs transport, and whether three days is really enough to see the highlights without rushing.

Having explored Isla Mujeres myself, I’ve put together this relaxed yet activity-packed 3-day itinerary designed specifically for first-time visitors. In the end, it allows you to experience the must-see attractions, so you can make the most of your time without overplanning.

3 Day Isla Mujeres Itinerary in Mexico

Isla Mujeres is the place to go when you’re looking for a sunny and exciting island escape. This incredible island boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, just perfect for swimming, lounging, or enjoying the views.

But let’s not forget about the island itself! Therefore, beyond the beach, there are charming streets lined with vibrant colours, as well as plenty of opportunities to shop, dine, and soak in the local culture.

⏱️ Short on Time?

Don’t have time to read the entire post? Here is a quick reference key to my Isla Mujeres three day Itinerary to get you started.

  • Day 1 – Day trip boat tour to swim with the whale sharks off the coast, OR out of season you could start with a Coral Reef trip, Sunset Sailing Cruises, or renting a bike to explore the island.
  • Day 2 – Boat trip off the coast to either dive or snorkel to see Musa Museum, OR other coral reef areas.
  • Day 3 – Hang out at the beaches, indulge in the shopping markets and stores, enjoy a lovely Mexican feast and end with watching the sunset.

  • 🏨 Where to Stay: We got a good deal at Hotel Posada del Mar, but I recommend you find Isla Mujeres accommodation around Playa Norte or Playa Centro beaches.
  • 🚗 Transport: You’ll need Ferry Transfers from Cancun Ultramar ferry dock in Puerto Juárez. Once on the Island, hiring a Golf Cart/Buggy is the best way to get around.
  • 📱Stay Connected with ESim Data Plans.
  • Best time to visit Isla Mujeres is between December and March, but Whale shark season is June to September, if you’re going for that.

Matt and I had one main objective to visit (the Whale Sharks), but we left with memories that will last a lifetime.

While we stayed for longer than the three days, I have highlighted my favourite things to do in the itinerary below!

Chris & Matt on our small boat tour to swim with the whale sharks off Isla Mujeres in Mexico

➡Day 1 – Whale Shark Swimming Tour

We took a tour to see the Whale Sharks of the coast of Isla Mujeres. They are magnificent creatures of the ocean and can reach a staggering 14 metres in length and weigh up to 15 tons.

It’s not surprising that you can feel quite insignificant when jumping into the water for the first time, and I’ll never forget my first sighting.

➡  Book Whale Sharks Tours HERE with Viator, or HERE with GYG.

But don’t let their size intimidate you! It is safe to swim with them as they are known as the gentle giants of the ocean. This is because they filter-feed on plankton and other tiny creatures in the water.

There are plenty of different tour operators on the Island, and you can actually book tours from Cancun as well. Before you know it, you’ll simply be captivated by the whale sharks and get up close and personal with the world’s largest fish.

This wildlife encounter was the whole reason we organized our trip to Isla Mujeres, and after three full-day tours into the open water, we were left in complete awe of these impressive creatures.

Note: seeing Whale Sharks is a seasonal activity from June to September each year. So, alternative day tours exist if you plan to visit outside of that. This includes snorkelling or Scuba Diving adventures, sunset & daytime sailing tours, fishing, and Glass Bottom Boats.

➡Day 2 – Musa Museum / Island Tour

Visit Musa Museum

A must-do activity is a trip to the Musa Museum, where incredible sculptures are hidden beneath the surface of the ocean. These include a Beetle Car, houses, and life-like statues of locals made from pH-neutral cement

A variety of sculptures under the water at Musa Museum

The museum is located off the coast of Isla Mujeres and boasts 500 art pieces crafted by the renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor.

Surprisingly, after years of cyclone damage, the pressure on the coral reef was immense, and this museum alleviated that pressure by promoting the growth of coral and marine life.

➡  Find Musa Museums Tours HERE with Viator, or HERE with GYG.

The result? A stunning and fascinating sustainable underwater paradise.

So, whether you’re a seasoned diver, a snorkeller, or prefer to stay dry in a glass-bottom boat, there are plenty of ways to see this mesmerizing site.

Tour other areas of the Island.

Since most people tend to base themselves on the Playa Norte side of the Island, today’s itinerary includes visiting the other areas.

At Punta Sur, you can connect with the history, rocky terrain, Maya Ruins, and a lighthouse

➡  Hire a Golf Cart HERE with Viator

It’s about 7.5 kilometres to the other side of the island, so options include hiring a golf buggy, walking (if you’re keen) or using public transport.

The Cliffs of Dawn is a legendary feature, where visitors can witness the sun rising over the horizon and casting its golden rays over the Mexican coast.

➡Day 3 – Beach Day / Shopping / Food / Sunset

Playa Del Norte

No Island vacation would be complete without a perfect beach day to sit, relax, swim, or read a book. Playa Norte is widely considered one of the best beaches in Isla Mujeres, so it’s where we will spend today.

The beach features the ultimate elements to express paradise. All complete with white sand, swaying palm trees, and warm, turquoise waters, ideal for lounging and relaxation.

And if you get hungry, there are plenty of bars and restaurants along the shore to keep you satisfied. Grab a chair and an umbrella, and spend an entire day soaking up the sun.

Walk the shores of Playa Norte Beach

Shopping

Isla Mujeres may be a stunning vacation spot, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave without taking a piece of the island with you.

So, if you need retail therapy, then the thriving and bustling streets won’t disappoint. The vendors on Miguel Hidalgo Avenue and beyond proudly showcase their unique items.

Let your senses be bombarded with the sights, sounds, and smells of this bustling tourist selection. As overwhelming as it may be, take the time to wander through the shops and choose something that speaks to you.

On the other hand, since it’s a small island, there could be more variety and better prices on the Mainland. Therefore, you can read into my comparisons between Isla Mujeres & Playa Del Carmen here if you’re planning a few stops on your vacation.

I ended up purchasing a lovely Mexican mask for my wall, a few magnets and some colourful blankets

Eat the Local Food

Travelling to new countries is an adventure for the senses, especially when it comes to exploring culture through food. So, while you’re wandering the streets and shops, don’t forget to stop in to try some local delicacies.

Mexican cuisine is known for its bold flavours and diverse dishes, and I could get enough of the tacos, burritos and quesadillas

All washed down with a crisp, cool Corona!

I highly recommend Ceviche, a delicious seafood dish. It’s made with fresh fish, shrimp, or scallops, with it being citrusy, spicy, and just plain enjoyable.

For some heat, try the enchiladas’ tender tortillas with chilli sauce, and remember the guacamole, which is the perfect side dish to elevate any meal.

Watch a sunset

Ending your day by watching the sun drop below the horizon is a special treat, especially on your last night in this fantastic paradise.

The sky becomes a kaleidoscopic display of colours, with oranges, pinks, and purples, as the sun sets against a picturesque ocean backdrop.

And what better way to take in the view than with an ice-cold beer (Corona’s again!) in hand?

It’s the ultimate way to relax and unwind, soaking in the beauty of nature while sipping on something cold and refreshing. And if you’re like me, remember to snap some pictures for your future memories of your 3 day Itinerary in Isla Mujeres!

Where to stay?

Isla Mujeres is a dream destination for anyone needing a tropical paradise getaway. And if you love to be in the centre of all the adventure, Playa Norte is the perfect place, the heartbeat of the island.

I did find the hotel prices a little higher here, but well worth it if you have the budget.

For convenience and for those after something a little cheaper, look no further than staying along Rueda Medina Av (a short stroll from Playa Norte). It’s just steps away from Playa Centro Beach and an easy walk from the Ferry Terminal.

I got a relatively good deal with Hotel Posada del Mar, and it was the ideal position for our stay.

How to get there & Around the Island?

Isla Mujeres is just a short 20-minute Ferry ride from the mainland city of Cancun.

You can hop in a taxi or take the public bus to the Ultramar ferry dock in Puerto Juárez and purchase your round-trip ticket for about 300 pesos.

Then get your first taste of the Caribbean sea air while cruising over to the Island.

➡  Get your Ferry tickets HERE with GYG

For convenience, the boats run every 30 minutes, and you can either book before you go, or simply show up and hop on the next one. Although, I’m sure it might be better to book in advance during busy seasons.

Ferry ride to Isla Mujeres

With the island’s size, you can walk or bike ride to many places, which is great for the budget. However, cruising around in a golf cart is so much fun and a brilliant way to explore further.

And you don’t even have to hire it the entire time, just schedule your site seeing and do it all in one day.

➡  Hire a Golf Cart HERE with Viator

There are many places where you can rent a golf cart either online in advance, or when you get there. Additionally, this can be affordable with prices averaging from $15US per hour to $48US during the day.

All you need is to be over 18 and have a valid driver’s license.

FAQ’s – Common Questions?

Best Time to visit?

While there are seasons in Isla Mujeres, some times are more ideal than others, depending on your arrangements. Budget, summer heat, and rain could all factor into this.

Graph Data on Month to Month Average Temperatures & Rainfall in Isla Mujeres in Fahrenheit

However, since I was visiting for the Whale Sharks, our July dates were met with a small amount of rain and some warm sunny days after that.

If you’re trying to travel at other times of the year, December through April boasts fantastic weather conditions. But this is also the busiest time for tourists, sometimes making it difficult to fully enjoy the island’s charm.

However, if you can handle the heat and occasional rain shower, consider from May through October when the sunshine is out, and snorkelling and diving opportunities abound.

Or, if you’re minding your budget, November and December might appeal.

While each season portrays its unique blend of activities, it’s crucial to keep an eye on the hurricane season, which typically peaks in September and October

Is it safe to visit?

From my experience, I can confidently say that I felt very safe visiting the island of Isla Mujeres. The island has a tranquil atmosphere and is a superb destination for those seeking relaxation or adventure.

The locals were welcoming, friendly, and helpful with directions or recommending a restaurant.

With that said, it doesn’t hurt to take some basic precautions and help ensure your trip is enjoyable and stress-free. If you’re visiting Isla Mujeres, make sure to be mindful of your surroundings and avoid dark alleys at night. And do not take anything with you (like expensive jewellery) that may attract unwanted attention.

With a little bit of caution and common sense, you’ll be able to relax and immerse yourself in all the beauty and civilizational awareness that this stunning destination offers.

My Best tips and Recommendations!

Here are some of my top recommendations to keep in mind.

  • It’s a great idea to book any transfers, golf carts, or trips in advance to save time and hassle once you arrive. (especially in the peak season)
  • Additionally, staying in or near the island’s downtown area can help you save on transportation costs and provide easy access to food, drinks, nightlife, and the beach.
  • It’s essential to stay hydrated in the hot summer months, so bring bottled water
  • Although the ice is okay, made from filtered water, just be advised NOT to drink tap water
