5 Day Playa Del Carmen Itinerary: Riviera Dreams for First-timers!

Researching a trip around the Yucatán could start with a 5 Day Playa del Carmen itinerary that makes the most of your time on the Riviera Maya. With cenotes, beaches, ruins, islands, and vibrant nightlife all within reach, I think Playa del Carmen is an ideal base for first-time visitors.

The biggest challenge is choice overload. Should you stay local or take day trips to Cozumel and Tulum? How do you balance beach time with cenotes and ancient ruins without feeling rushed? For many first-timers, it’s hard to know what’s realistic, and what’s worth the effort.

Having spent time exploring Playa del Carmen as a base, I’ve built this itinerary specifically for first-time visitors who want variety without stress. This guide breaks down each day, while still seeing the highlights that make Playa del Carmen such a standout destination.

5 Day Playa Del Carmen Itinerary in Mexico

I’ve created this five day itinerary in Playa Del Carmen, to help you maximize your time touring the city. So, join me as we take you on a journey through historical sites or participate in any number of spectacular activities!

So, is Playa Del Carmen Worth the visit? I definitely think so with unique cenotes, adventure parks, beaches, snorkelling in the Caribbean and much more.

But we especially loved its charm, convenient location to Cancun, abundant culture and atmosphere, making it much more than just a thrill-seeker’s paradise.  

➡Day 1 – Mayan Ruins Day tour

Although there are various Mayan ruins, none are as famous as the Chichen Itza, which is just over two hours from Playa Del Carmen. It’s recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World and UNESCO World Heritage Listing, and it’s easy to see why.

With an immense size and rich, inspirational history, the ruins are a highlight of a day trip from the city.

Although Chichen Itza is remarkable, it can get pretty crowded and is not always ideal for everyone.

That said, don’t be discouraged, there are other Mayan Ruins and we found our way to the Ek Balam Ruins.

Ek Balam is about the same distance away from Playa Del Carmen but comes with two more distant features. This includes an option to climb the stairs to the top of the ruins and visit the nearby Cenote Maya Park.

So, not only did we get guided on the history of the Mayan people and their traditions. But, it was an experience of a lifetime abseiling into the cenote.

Ultimately, it was so much fun swimming, riding the zipline and jumping off the platforms. 

➡Day 2 – Xplor Park / XCaret

This Xplor Park is worth checking out for a whole day and is the epitome of exhilarating entertainment. It offers 18 different ziplines, waterslides, and even amphibious vehicle rides through their circuit jungle.

The 18 zip lines will satisfy adventurous souls, and will take a few hours to travel to two different circuits.

On the other hand, you can chill with a river ride or swim through cenotes and under waterfalls. Generally, the ticket price will include lunch, and some offer hotel pickup (if you want it, but we took a Taxi from our hotel). 

While the Xcaret Park is another whole day trip to explore, I at least recommend seeing the Mexico Espectacular show in the evening.

From the moment it began, I was enthralled by the colours, dances, and music that brought everything that is Mexico to life, exhibiting the splendour of its richness and diversity.

The ultimate theatrical production takes place in a great outdoor arena with 6,000 seats.

With over 300 cast members, the production showcases unique traditions and the richness of Mexico. Each region’s story is brought to vivid life through a marvellous display of costumes and mesmerizing performances.  

➡Day 3 – Swimming in Cenotes

Another highlight while in the Yucatan Peninsula is the city of Tulum. The area is home to an abundance of cenotes and is only one hour south of Playa Del Carmen.

As someone who has been to a few of these underground pools, I highly recommend El Pit Cenote for divers, to probe the depths of the earth.

Then, for a more casual dip, the Dos Ojos Cenote is worth it, offering snorkelling and diving.  other choices might include the Grand Cenote, Cenote Azul, Cenote Cristalino, and Cenote Jardin del Eden (Ponderosa).

➡Day 4 – Day trip to Cozumel

Cozumel is the largest Island oasis in the Mexican Caribbean, and it’s a great place to de-stress on a day trip.

You can choose between a fully guided tour or taking the ferry and doing your own thing. Either way, the Island escape will undoubtedly add some variety to your Playa Del Carmen itinerary.

The gorgeous sunsets and lush jungle landscapes are designed for unwinding. And the history buffs can tour ancient Mayan ruins and learn about the history of the Caribbean and of the island. 

The clear waters provide some of the most incredible snorkelling and diving within a fascinating underwater world. Therefore, you can expect vibrant coral formations, schools of tropical fish, and even the occasional sea turtle.

➡Day 5 – Shopping & Beach Day / Food

Shopping

La Quinta is the premier place for shopping and excitement in the heart of Playa Del Carman. Once you step onto this buzzing avenue, you’ll be drawn to the colourful storefronts selling souvenirs and handmade crafts.   

While wandering around, we stumbled upon performers from authentic Mexican dancers and musicians around every corner who left us stunned. However, our absolute favourite performance was the Danza de Los Voladores or Flying Pole dance, an ancient Mesoamerican ritual.

We did some shopping here and Isla Mujeres (just off the coast of Cancun), but found the prices and variety much better in Playa Del Carmen. If it helps, you can read my comparison between the two locations, if you want to know the differences.

See the Portal Maya Sculpture

The Portal Maya Sculpture in Parque Los Fundadores, is just one of those sights you pass by when wandering around the streets.

It is a striking 52 feet high, made of bronze, and features a couple with clenching hands. 

It’s an iconic centrepiece figure overlooking the beach with captivating and intricate details.

Visit the Beach

Playa del Carmen’s beaches are easily accessible by foot or car, depending on where your hotel is.

Stay for as little or as long as you want, go swimming, laze on the beach, or simply fill in a little time between excursions!

Unfortunately, while the beach was awesome, it was clear that the locals were fighting a losing battle, trying to clean up mass seaweed with tractors!

This Sargassum invasion is a yearly occurrence (between April and August)with the tides and weather changes. Therefore, I hope it’s better for your visit. 

Try the Food

I’m not much of a foodie, But when I visit any country, I love to try all the local flavours – And I just LOVE Mexican cuisine! 

While wandering the streets or shopping districts, we never had any issues with service or a good meal. And most the waiters spoke English, which helps us out immensely.

What sets this place apart is the passion and love the restaurant owners put into every dish. They take pride in their craft, and it shows in the food quality.  

Where to stay

When comparing accommodations in Playa del Carmen you’ll want to begin Downtown. Review the neighbourhoods of El Centro, Quinta Avenida, and Playacar for their exciting nightlife, shopping, and dining options.

Alternatively, you can head to North Playa del Carmen for something more peaceful with sought-after beaches. It’s only a thirty-minute walk from Downtown and seems like a different world.

Otherwise, be more adventurous and try South Riviera Maya, with its cenotes, jungle, and beaches between Playa and Tulum.  

How to get there & Around

If you’re flying into Cancun, then you have options to get you the one-hour south to Playa Del Carmen. Sure, you can rent a car, but there are group shuttles and also public Transport to get you there.

Surprisingly, we went with a private shuttle service with door-to-door pick-up and drop-off.

Sure, it was a little more expensive, but the time we saved by not having to navigate public transportation or wait for shared shuttles was priceless. 

Perusing Playa Del Carmen shouldn’t be rushed, but finding the best way to get around that suits your situation is important.

We used a Hotel pickup service, walking, and the Taxi service, which was easy to arrange, but there are various options to choose from.

Biciplaya’s bike-sharing system is an eco-friendly alternative that will get you there quicker than walking. Otherwise, Colectivo and the City Bus offer affordable public transportation.

Additionally, the ADO Bus is great if you’re feeling more adventurous and want to check out nearby towns and cities.  

When’s the best time to visit

The ideal months for experiencing the very best of this tropical paradise are from December to March, the winter months. For the coolest month, January offers an average daily maximum of 27 degrees Celsius for those who love warmth but want to avoid the heat.  

However, if you love hot weather, May is the month for you, with an average daily maximum temperature of 33 degrees. Some consider September and October gloomy due to the lack of sunshine. However, these months have their own attractions and benefits. 

I actually visited the area during July and August, the rainy season, but this was the only time I could take one of the Whale Shark tours. 

I think it only rained for 2 hours on our first day and then brilliant for the rest – So, I guess luck plays a big part too.

FAQ’s – Common Questions?

Is it safe to visit

If you have some concerns about city safety in Playa Del Carmen, it’s important to use your common sense and take precautions while you’re there.

While it’s true that any destination can present potential dangers, Playa Del Carmen is generally considered a safe place to visit.  

One thing to remember is to leave your valuables at home and avoid bringing anything that could attract attention. Furthermore, limit strolling the streets at night, watch your alcohol intake and never accept a drink from a stranger, especially if you’re travelling solo.  

Always trust your instincts and be aware of your surroundings.

What to eat and drink?

Exploring the local food scene in a new city is a wondrous event! But I have some choices here to help you out.

El Fogon serves up great tacos al pastor in town, while La Parilla offers an incredible range of grilled meats and seafood.  

If you desire something low-key, head to Carboncitos for some casual Mexican fare or fresh ceviche at Los Aguachiles. Finally, for truly unique dining, venture into the jungle to find La Cueva del Chango, where you’ll dine among lush greenery and a serene waterfall.

Not only are the food options endless, but the restaurant staff’s warm hospitality adds an extra layer of charm.   

Food

Make sure you try some of these lovely Mexican dishes:  

• The Taco – soft or hard shell
• Burritos packed with pinto beans, chicken, beef, pork, and sour cream
• Pozole is a hearty soup or stew made with pork
• Chilaquiles are crispy square tortilla pieces served with salsa
• Huarache is made with a doughy base filled with beans and salsa for something a little more filling.  
• Cochinita Pibil is a slow-roasted pork dish. 
• Quesadilla – I can’t get enough of these grilled wraps!
• Tripas, which are boiled and grilled small intestines used as fillings for tacos  

Drinks

After that, you can wash it all down with one of the many delicious and refreshing Mexican drinks like:

• Paloma
• Pulque
• Margarita
• Cerveza
• Horchata 
• Michelada   
• Agua Fresca 
• Mexican Coffee F 

Is it expensive to visit?

Setting your best Playa Del Carmen itinerary can be daunting, especially when you are under a budget. However, besides the daily tours and adventure activities, I didn’t find the prices too high.

But I do live in Australia, and things can get pretty expensive here compared to elsewhere. 

However, everyone’s budget is different, and you can certainly make this trip fit yours. I’m always choosing a hotel based in a location convenient for my activities and walking distance from other entertainment. Price comes second to that, once I look up the Reviews. 

It’s easy to find cheap and delicious food at taco stands and local bars. And, if you’re staying near the 5th Avenue area, the restaurants are more expensive. That said, there are many local spots near 10th and 30th Avenue that are reasonably priced.  

Is it ok to drink the water?

Plan your Mexico vacation carefully to avoid any potential health risks and ruining your vacation. It’s crucial that you don’t drink the town’s water supply and opt for sparkling or bottled water when dining at restaurants.  

Additionally, brushing your teeth with tap water is NOT recommended. So instead, use in-room bottled water or purchase some extras from nearby stores.  

Most of the ice in Mexico is made from filtered water, so you can enjoy your cocktails and sodas (if in doubt, just ask). But above all, remember to stay hydrated while in the hot temperatures of Mexico.

Wrap up!

Overall, I think a five day Playa del Carmen itinerary is a great choice for your next vacation. Together with its local heritage, Caribbean Sea, marvellous cenotes, and a vast variety of delicious cuisine. It’s definitely my ideal holiday!
