Day 1 – Pearl Harbour Memorial
Visiting the Pearl Harbour Memorial is an emotional and profound experience that can easily last the whole day. Therefore, It’s important to come prepared and dressed for the occasion. This includes wearing comfortable clothing and shoes that you can survive walking around for hours on end.
➡ Find Pearl Harbour tours HERE with Viator, or HERE with GYG.
The Base area stands as a solemn reminder of one of the most significant moments in American history. On December 7, 1941, over 2,400 Americans lost their lives, and twelve ships were sunk in the Harbour, marking the start of the United States’ involvement in World War II.

You can obviously visit the site on your own and see the displays as you walk around. But I want to stress the importance of booking in advance to avoid missing out on the highlights.
It’s one of the best activities to do in Honolulu, jam-packed with crowds, and sometimes choosing pre-booked tours (this is what we did) will provide transport and skipping lines to specific exhibits.

Day 2 – Diamond Head & Helicopter Flight
Diamond Head
Honolulu has no shortage of amazing things to see and do, but there’s one activity that stands out.
The Diamond Head Crater summit hike, otherwise known as Lē‘ahi.
This iconic landmark has been a part of Oahu’s coastal defence system since 1908, and it’s fascinating to explore the bunkers, tunnels, and observation towers left behind from that time.

But what really makes this hike special is the stunning panoramic views of the Beach and beyond that await you at the top. Not only is it an excellent workout, but it’s also one of the best & cheap things to do in Honolulu.
However, don’t let the difficulty level deter you, as the trek is only one mile or 1.5 kilometres one way, making it accessible to almost everyone. And if you time your visit just right during the winter months, you could even spot some passing whales in the distance.

Helicopter Flight
Helicopter flights are sometimes my all-time favourite thing to do, but it does depend on the location. What more could you want with Hawaiian Island beachside views, but we opted for the added bonus of flying in a replica of the Magnum PI chopper from the old TV show.
➡ Book Helicopter Tours HERE with Viator, or HERE with GYG.
Fair enough, the flight alone is probably good enough; I guess if you were a fan of the show, you would understand! In the end, it might not be the cheapest activity, but trust me, it’s worth every penny.

The views from up high are simply stunning, and you’ll be able to see so much of the island in such a short amount of time.
After many helicopter flights around the world, another incentive for this tour was flying with the doors off. Sounds scary, I know, but I love the photos so much better this way, and you can read more about my Helicopter flight review and experience here.
The ride was phenomenal, from the stunning North Beach to awe-inspiring views of Diamond Head Crater and the beaches. However, seeing the entire Pearl Harbour base from the air was the most incredible.
I felt like I was part of history, flying above a location where so much has occurred.

Day 3 – Beach Day, Photo with “The Duke”
Beach Day & Esplanade
Who doesn’t like a beach day?
And if you’re staying in Waikiki, then you won’t have to go far. With 2 miles of beaches, the sound of crashing waves, the salty breeze, and endless relaxation.
So, how is this for a plan? Why don’t you start out your morning at the esplanade with a delicious breakfast? Then, take your time strolling through the shops and soak up the entertaining atmosphere along the way. When you’re ready, grab your towel, find a spot on the beach, and dive into crystal blue waters.

But it doesn’t stop there, you can go swimming, learn to surf, or try out paddle boarding. You can even catch the free fire breathing show or acrobatics.
With nothing but the warmth of the sun and the sound of waves, you can spend the day lazing around and watching the world go by. Waikiki may be full of things to do, but sometimes, the best vacation is the one with no agenda at all.

Photo with “The Duke”
Standing tall on the Beach is “The Duke”, who welcomes visitors to the picturesque island of Oahu. This bronze statue of Duke Kahanamoku is a true symbol of Hawaiian pride and honours a hero who mastered swimming, canoe paddling, and surfing in Waikiki.
Duke’s accomplishments in swimming are impressive, having broken world records during his first competition and winning gold and silver medals in various events at the Olympics.
Today, the statue attracts thousands of visitors every day who come to take pictures and pay tribute to the legendary Duke.

Day 4 – Trolley Hop-on Hop-off
Try out the most interesting way to explore Honolulu with the Trolley Hop-on Hop-off service! Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a first-time visitor, this service lets you discover all that the city has to offer on your own terms.
➡ Purchase Trolley tickets HERE with Viator, or HERE with GYG
From stunning beaches to mouth-watering cuisine, there’s no limit to what you can see and do with the help of this convenient public transport system.
- The Blue Line allows travellers to experience the towering cliffs of the Na Pali Coast and the shimmering waters of Waikiki Beach.
- The Green line will get you near Diamond Head
- The Pink Line offers luxury boutiques to street vendor shopping.
- Or the Red Line captivates Honolulu’s past up to its modern present.

Day 5 – Snorkelling or Diving, Luau Cultural Show
Snorkelling or Diving
Embark on a adventure to Turtle Canyon and explore the majestic underwater world of coral caverns and vibrant tropical fish. Glide through the crystal-clear waters and keep your eyes peeled for the green sea turtles that frequent the area.
➡ Find Snorkelling Tours HERE with Viator, or HERE with GYG.
Not only that, but a shark dive tour promises to be a unique and exhilarating experience. While guaranteed safety measures are in place at all times, it is still an exciting opportunity to get close to sharks that can grow up to 15 feet (5 meters) in length.
Depending on the season, the coast is also a Whale Watching playground. Their acrobatics are nothing short of amazing and will leave you in complete awe. As you get lost in the moment, you’ll learn about the strong cultural significance that these creatures hold for native Hawaiians- being a representation of Kanaloa, the god of all ocean life.

Luau Show
What better way to end your 5 day Oahu Itinerary than with a Luau Cultural dinner and show? This lively event is a great place to meet other travellers as well as learn about Hawaiian culture while having tons of fun.
You’ll be treated to an enormous feast featuring mouth watering dishes such as Kalua Pig and Haupia. And, of course, there’s no better way to end a meal than with some locally-made poi!
➡ Find Luau Shows HERE with Viator, or HERE with GYG.
But it’s not just about the food – the Luau also features thrilling music and enchanting cultural performances, complete with song and dance. Learn the art of hula dancing, take part in headband weaving, witness the imu ceremony, or see the fire dancing.
Does this sound like an exciting way to end your trip?

Where to Stay?
For me, It is all about the location and price, being able to walk places, close to public transport, or tour pickup spots. As it was, we stayed at the Aston Waikiki Hotel and it had convenient options to get around.
➡ Book Honolulu accommodation HERE with Booking.com
Despite ours not being the fanciest hotel, the convenience of being directly across from the beach made up for it. Honolulu can suit your budget, from basic and affordable accommodations to luxurious resorts.
However, the only downside to an esplanade hotel is the noise. This comes from the passing cars, sirens, and anything else. Therefore, I suggest that if you’re a light sleeper, ensure you look into the balcony soundproofing or maybe choose somewhere off the main street.

How to get Around?
While hiring a car for this Oahu Itinerary is unnecessary, there may be some instances where it’s beneficial to have your own set of wheels.
Perhaps there are some specific sites or attractions that aren’t on the regular tourist route you want to see. Or you’re staying extra days and want the flexibility to drive around as you please.
➡Find your favourite brand & compare prices for your Rental Car HERE
Renting a car can be a game-changer, and while I didn’t need it this trip, it does allow me to set my own time schedule and spend as much time as I wanted at each location.
However, if you do decide to rent a car, be sure to budget for parking or enquire at your hotel, as it can be pretty expensive in the city.

Best time to visit?
Honolulu is known for beachside fun that can be enjoyed any time of the year, and my April visit was no exception. Despite being out of high season for us, the weather was fantastic, and the crowds were manageable, making for a more personalized experience.

Consequently, it was the affordability that sealed the deal, as I felt the prices were more reasonable compared to the peak summer months.
While it’s true that June to August is when Waikiki is alive with a bustling tourist scene, the prices can reflect that. Therefore, those seeking a more peaceful getaway may want to consider other months when you can find more room to relax and special deals.

Is it safe to visit?
I thought Waikiki was a fantastic destination for anyone looking for a safe and comfortable vacation spot. The streets are easy to navigate, and the locals are friendly and inviting.
As Australian tourists, we always felt comfortable walking around and exploring the area.
While it’s always wise to take certain safety precautions, there’s no need to worry excessively while there. Just remember to be aware of your surroundings and use common sense, and you’ll be able to thoroughly enjoy all that it has to offer.

Wrap Up & Read More!
Overall, Oahu is an excellent destination for anyone looking for a nice balance of activities and relaxation. While a 5 day Waikiki Itinerary will be a nice taste tester for the area’s highlights, tourists can and will easily spend a week or two here (if you have the time).
