If you’re planning a trip to Tropical North Queensland, you might be wondering the difference between Cairns vs Port Douglas and which is the better destination for your next beach holiday? Both spots are iconic gateways to the Great Barrier Reef and the Rainforest, but they offer very different vibes.
The tricky part is that most first-time visitors don’t know which location will suit their style of travel. Cairns is bigger, busier, and more affordable, with lots of tours and nightlife. Port Douglas, on the other hand, is smaller and more relaxed, famous for its luxury resorts and stunning Four Mile Beach, but it usually comes with a higher price tag.
So, how do you choose? Having spent time in both destinations, I’ll compare them side by side, looking at beaches, reef trips, food, atmosphere, accommodation, transport, and overall value. So, you’ll know exactly which one is the better match for your tropical getaway.

Cairns Vs Port Douglas – Overall Comparison?
Ultimately, when it comes to choosing between Cairns and Port Douglas, it really depends on your budget and what you want to see. Both are known as a “Reef Gateway,” and each offers a unique blend of outdoor activities, stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and great food and entertainment.
But, I have a small table below to give you a brief overview to help!
Personally, I think both destinations are great to visit and have their own drawcards.
- Cairns is worthwhile, offering more options for Great Barrier Reef Tours, the picturesque Kuranda, and some incredible waterfalls. And know that I’ve spent many relaxing days swimming at places like Babinda Boulders or Josephine Falls.
- Meanwhile, you’ll benefit from visiting Port Douglas as the neighbour to the stunning Daintree National Park, Mossman, and various other Great Barrier Reef options. Although, while you can visit the Daintree from both towns, it’s actually closer to Port Douglas.
However, no matter which destination you choose, they are only one hour away from each other and can be seen on the same holiday. Ultimately, selecting a base town to stay in and exploring the other on a day trip is possible!
Which is better to see the Great Barrier Reef?
As someone who has had the opportunity to dive and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef over 100 times, I can tell you that there isn’t much difference between the different cities along the coastline (including the comparison between Cairns and Port Douglas).
However, I have noticed a distinct variation between the inner and outer parts of the reef. While you genuinely never know what you’re going to see on any given day, I think it comes down to pure luck.
Sometimes, you might be lucky enough to witness an abundance of marine life, and other times you may not. That being said, one thing is certain: the Great Barrier Reef is a truly magnificent wonder of the world that should be on every traveller’s bucket list in Australia.
Which one is more expensive to visit?
Cairns would definitely be the ideal choice when looking for budget accommodation. This beautiful city has proven time and time again to be a reliable and affordable international gateway, welcoming travellers from all around the world. If you’re looking to save some cash, finding a cheaper place to stay in Cairns is the clear choice for you.

But what if you’re after a little bit of luxury? If that’s the case, then Port Douglas is precisely what you want. As an exclusive and secluded destination, it’s perfect for special getaways, honeymoons, or just a little rest and relaxation.
However, just keep in mind that Port Douglas has more expensive accommodation options, so make sure it fits within your budget. On the other hand, there are ways to find cheaper alternatives here, but it requires you to stay out of town, and not directly on the beach.

Do you need to hire a car?
So what’s the best way to get around in either town? If you know anything about me, I tend to visit many hidden sites, local hotspots, and things that tours or public transport don’t go to.

This means I personally prefer to rent a car because it gives me the flexibility to explore at my own pace and see as much as possible in a short period of time.
While you don’t have to hire a car in either, I think Port Douglas has a BIGGER NEED to hire a car without a public Transport system.(more on that below)

Which has the better beaches?
If you’re looking for stunning beaches in Queensland, look no further than Port Douglas and its famous Four Mile beach. While it’s true that Crocs and stingers can pose a threat, the beach is patrolled and offers designated safe areas for swimming.
If you’re looking for a place to dip your toes in the water while on vacation in Cairns, then you might want to skip the beach straight off the city.
Unfortunately, it’s not really swimmable, and it’s more of a mangrove area than a sandy oasis. Plus, there’s the added risk of Stingers during the summer season, and crocodiles can pass by all year round.
However, there are plenty of fantastic options if you want to see some of Australia’s breath-taking beaches. Just book a tour to one of the islands as I think there is plenty to do at Green Island, or maybe you might like Fitzroy Island, for example.
To truly experience the coastal beauty of the region, consider taking a tour to explore other nearby beaches like Palm Cove and Ellis Beach. And during their jellyfish season, don’t forget to suit up in a lycra stinger suit to keep yourself safe while enjoying the water.
Best things to do (Apart from the Great Barrier Reef)
There are plenty of tour options from both towns, and you’ll have no trouble seeing the highlights like the Daintree National Park and the Great Barrier Reef from either.
That being said, I feel like Cairns has more choices, and you’ll want to plan out a 7-day itinerary in Cairns carefully so you don’t miss out on any of the fantastic adventures. This includes options between the Great Barrier Reef, Atherton Tablelands, Kuranda, and even day trips north to Port Douglas or further.

On the other hand, Port Douglas is a laid-back luxury destination and perfect for those who want to kick back and relax but also have plenty of options for entertainment. Therefore, I recommend planning a 5 day itinerary in Port Douglas to see all the major sites, or longer to sit by the beach or pool every day.

Airport, Safety, & Population
Where is the closest Airport?
The good news is since they are only a one-hour drive from each other – There is only the Cairns International Airport to fly into. Therefore, Cairns would be the more straightforward option to base your accommodation if you’re not looking to transfer!
But how do you get from Cairns to Port Douglas? Well, you’re lucky that it’s not too tricky, and you can make your way there by hiring a car or taking a shuttle service from the airport or city. Therefore, don’t let the distance between these two destinations deter you from experiencing the best of what tropical North Queensland has to offer.

I would personally hire a car, but this is simply for the freedom of exploring, and I’m usually under a strict time schedule. Not only that, unfortunately, there isn’t much public transportation in Port Douglas, and it will make it easier to get around.
Are they both Safe to visit?
Just like any North Queensland coastal town, you start to raise concerns when it comes to taking a dip in the water. Choosing the Best time of year you want to visit is easy as long as you understand what you can and can’t do. With stingers (jellyfish) and the deadly saltwater Crocodiles, it’s essential to exercise caution whenever you’re near the water or going for a swim.
But places like this have precautions to best protect their tourists, and there are plenty of ways to avoid situations like these. Some of these include swimming in the freshwater streams or visiting during the winter season from April to October.
Apart from that, Cairns is simply stunning, but like any city, it does have its fair share of issues. Unfortunately, youth crime and homelessness have increased recently and you need to be cautious.
I have visited the area about ten times over the past fifteen years and can honestly say it is one of the friendliest and most welcoming Australian towns. However, there are certain areas that you might want to steer clear of around the city alone, or late at night. But it’s a safe place to be if you use your better judgment.
On the other hand, Port Douglas is a pretty chill place to be, and you can wander the streets day or night and feel secure knowing that crime isn’t a major concern there.
What’s the difference in population
Cairns might be the perfect place for you if you’re looking for a bustling city experience. With a population of 161 thousand residents, there’s always something going on in this lively metropolis. From a vibrant nightlife and backpacker scene, to an endless option for dining and entertainment, you’ll always have things to do.
On the other hand, if you’re seeking a more intimate and peaceful vacation, Port Douglas may be more to your liking. With just over 5 thousand residents, this charming town is perfect for enjoying some much-needed relaxation and rejuvenation.
Traffic, Public Transport & Food
Which has better Traffic?
Driving around Cairns during peak work hours can be a bit of a headache. The traffic is definitely more built up, as it’s a bigger town. I found myself stopping and starting a lot, which can be frustrating.
On the other hand, Port Douglas has a bit more room to breathe. Although it only has one main street and one road running along the locality, I never had any issues with parking or getting around in my car. It felt freeing to be able to drive without constantly hitting the brakes.
Therefore, if you’re looking for an easy and stress-free drive, Port Douglas may be the better option for you.
Is there Public Transport?
If you’ll be relying on Public Transport for your travel, then Cairns definitely has more systems available.
This includes a daily public bus, Taxis, Ubers, and walking (if you’re staying close to town). While it’s true that the buses come with some limitations, they’re still an excellent option for those who want to save money on transportation while on their trip, especially if you’re a backpacker.
On the other hand, Port Douglas is limited with public transport and only offering tour pickups, walking around, and a few taxis. While you can get a shuttle bus from Cairns, there are still no buses to get you around town.
I just wanted you to know, public transportation is certainly an option, but it can be limiting in terms of where you can go and when you can get there. If you ask me, I like the freedom to venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that you might have missed otherwise.
Can you find great places to eat?
As someone who doesn’t consider themselves a foodie, I was pleasantly surprised to find an abundance of dining options in both.
But from what I’ve heard and experienced, Port Douglas seems to shine when it comes to satisfying the cravings of culinary enthusiasts. There’s something about the small-town vibe and the coastal location that just adds an extra flair to the already impressive selection of restaurants.
However, you can find enough fresh seafood, fusion meals, cheap takeaways, to gourmet burgers at both. So, even if you’re not a die-hard foodie like me, don’t be afraid to explore either town’s café and restaurant scene.
Weather, Stingers & Crocodiles!
Is there a difference in the Weather?
With both towns only an hour apart from each other, it makes their weather changes almost identical. Although surprisingly, different seasons bring a varied experience. This means you’ll find international tourists visiting in summer to escape their winter, and Aussie tourists will visit in winter to escape the colder southern temperature.
Clearly, this makes it a great place to visit no matter what time of year. It just depends on what kind of experience you’re after. But you’ll have to come to see for yourself why both are must-see destinations!

- December to March – 23 to 33 degrees Celsius (350mm, 10 to 14 days of rain)
- March to May – 24 to 29 degrees Celsius ( 200mm, 12 to 17 days of rain)
- September to November – 23 to 30 degrees Celsius (50mm, 5 days of rain)
Do you need to look out for stingers or Jellyfish?
When planning a visit to either, it’s crucial to be aware of stinger or Jellyfish season. From November to May each year, these coastal areas are affected by potentially dangerous jellyfish.
While it may be tempting to take a dip in the beautiful waters, you must take preventative measures to avoid being stung. Thankfully, there are plenty of options to protect yourself, such as wearing a stinger suit or swimming in areas with net enclosures.
Are there Crocodiles?
When it comes to North Queensland, there’s no denying that the sight of crocodiles can be a little unnerving. These fascinating creatures can be found hanging around rivers and estuaries, especially in warmer, cloudier water.
While they tend to shy away from the salt water, crocodiles may occasionally venture out to move from one river to another. Fortunately, many beaches in the area have protective measures like nets or lifeguards to keep visitors safe.
Despite these precautions, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Therefore, never swim alone, swim in netted or lifeguarded areas, or do your research before stepping into an unknown location.
