5 Best Ways to Get to Port Douglas from Anywhere in Australia

If you’re dreaming of a tropical getaway in Port Douglas, the gateway to both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, one of the first questions you’ll face is: how do I actually get there? Unlike some other Queensland destinations, Port Douglas doesn’t have its own airport, Public Bus or Train station, meaning that no matter where you’re travelling from in Australia, you’ll always need to transit through Cairns first.

For first-time visitors, this can feel a little tricky, but from Cairns, the real decision begins: should you hire a car and enjoy the scenic coastal drive, hop on a shuttle, or pay for a private transfer? Some options are quicker but more expensive, and knowing the pros and cons can make a big difference to your holiday experience.

Therefore, today, I’ve compared all the main ways to get from Port Douglas via Cairns, including flights, self-driving, shuttle transfers, buses, and even why trains can only take you part of the way.

How to Get to Port Douglas (Via Cairns)?

When it comes to getting to Port Douglas, you have a few options, but only the Flights, Public Bus and Trains will get you as far as Cairns. From there, you can transit in approx. 1.5 hours to Port Douglas using either:
1. Hiring a Car in Cairns to drive to Port Douglas and use it as a way of getting around town and see the sites (Since there is no Public Transport in town).
2. If you’re staying central in Port Douglas and walking around, then booking a Shuttle Service from Cairns will be convenient.

Out of the 5 ways to get to Port Douglas mentioned below, some of these will be more convenient or suitable for you than others, some will be more budget-friendly, or sometimes you’ll need to combine services.

I’ll be going into more detail on all the options below, but here is a quick reference key on all the options, with Pros and Cons comparison to get you started!

1. Getting there by Car

If you love the freedom of the open road, driving or hiring a car to reach Port Douglas can be an adventure in itself. In fact, many travellers choose to make the iconic Brisbane to Cairns road trip and then continue north to Port Douglas.

When it comes to any of my traveling, there’s no doubt that driving is always my first option. I think it gives you the flexibility to stop wherever and whenever you want. Not only that, but you won’t have to worry about waiting around for a bus or shuttle to arrive or missing out on things when you run out of time.

These can be hired from any major Airport Like Cairns or Brisbane, or in Port Douglas itself on the days you need a car. Here are some pros and cons to consider if you’re thinking about travelling this way.

✅ Pros

  • Ultimate Freedom – Travel at your own pace, stop at hidden gems, and explore off-the-beaten-path spots along the way.
  • Scenic Drives – The Captain Cook Highway from Cairns to Port Douglas is amazing, and the longer coastal drives up the east coast are equally rewarding.
  • Cost-Saving for Groups – Hiring a car and splitting fuel costs can be cheaper than multiple flights and transfers, especially for families or groups.

❌ Cons

  • Long Distances – Driving from major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, or even Brisbane takes a lot of time (For me, minimum two weeks from Brisbane).
  • Fatigue & Safety – Long stretches of road can be tiring, and you’ll need to plan rest stops carefully to avoid driver fatigue.
  • Car Hire Costs – If you’re not using your own vehicle, one-way hire fees and fuel costs can add up quickly.

2. Getting there by Shuttle Bus

If you’re planning to visit Port Douglas without driving, one of the easiest ways to get there is by using a shuttle service.

These services only operate from Cairns Airport, your accommodation or CBD, so you’ll first need to fly, take a bus, or catch the train into Cairns before continuing north.

With plenty of companies to choose from (Private and Shared rides) and regular pick-up times. This is great for the budget-conscious people who don’t need a car to get around town.

Once you arrive, here are some pros and cons of choosing a shuttle.

✅ Pros

  • Hassle-Free Transfer – No need to worry about navigating roads or parking, you’re dropped directly at your accommodation.
  • Affordable Option – Shuttles are usually cheaper than private transfers or hiring a car, making them budget-friendly.
  • Frequent Departures – Many operators run regular services timed with incoming flights, so connections are convenient.

❌ Cons

  • Limited Flexibility – You’re tied to the shuttle timetable and may have to wait if your flight doesn’t align.
  • Shared Service – Often you’ll travel with other passengers, which can mean extra stops before reaching your hotel.
  • Only from Cairns – You still need to organise transport to Cairns first, as there are no direct shuttles from elsewhere in Queensland.

3. Getting there by Air

If you’re planning a trip to Port Douglas, one of the quickest and easiest ways to get there is by flying into Cairns Airport from major cities around Australia, then making you way further north.

Once you arrive in Cairns, you have the two methods of transportation mentioned above. Whether you choose to hop on a shuttle bus or rent a car from the Cairns airport, the short journey is well worth the effort.

Here are a few pros and cons to help you weigh up this option.

✅ Pros

  • Fast & Convenient – Direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to Cairns make it the quickest way to get close to Port Douglas.
  • Plenty of Options – Multiple airlines (Qantas, Virgin, Jetstar, Rex) operate frequent flights with competitive fares.
  • Great Scenic Drive – The transfer from Cairns to Port Douglas along the Captain Cook Highway (Great Barrier Reef Drive) is one of the most beautiful coastal drives in Australia.

❌ Cons

  • Extra Transfer Needed – Port Douglas doesn’t have its own airport, so you’ll need to arrange a shuttle, private transfer, or car hire from Cairns.
  • Cost Variations – Airfares can fluctuate, especially during peak holiday seasons or school breaks.
  • Baggage & Add-ons – Budget airlines often charge extra for luggage, seat selection, and other perks.

4. Getting there by Bus

If you’re considering an alternative to flying or driving, you can take the Greyhound Australia bus service all the way from Brisbane to Cairns. This long-haul journey covers much of the Queensland coast and can even be combined with stops along the way, but it’s not for everyone.

The Bus will arrive at Bunda Street behind the Cairns Central Shopping Centre. From there, you can catch a shuttle bus service or visiting a car hire depot. I guess this is where some people will choose to explore both towns and hang around Cairns for a few days before going north.

Here are the main pros and cons to help you decide:

✅ Pros

  • Budget-Friendly – Generally cheaper than flying or hiring a car, especially if you book in advance. Tends to suit the Backpacker with multiple stop passes.
  • Hop-On, Hop-Off Flexibility – Greyhound passes allow you to stop at destinations like Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Airlie Beach, Townsville, or Cairns on your way north.
  • No Driving Stress – You can relax, read, or sleep without worrying about long hours behind the wheel.

❌ Cons

  • Very Long Journey – The Brisbane to Cairns trip takes over 30 hours, making it a serious time commitment.
  • Limited Comfort – While modern coaches are decent, being seated for that long can be tiring and less comfortable than flying.
  • Fewer Departure Times – Buses don’t run as frequently as flights, so your schedule will need to fit Greyhound’s timetable.

5. Getting there by Train

If you prefer a slower, scenic journey instead of flying, driving, or catching a bus, you can take the Spirit of Queensland train from Brisbane to Cairns, and then continue onward to Port Douglas by shuttle or hire car.

This comes down to your preference, and there are plenty of people that enjoy travelling by Train to admire the views along the way. However, they arrive into Bunda Street central station in Cairns, same at the Bus station!

Not only that, but you have the flexibility of getting up and walking around inside the carriage(unlike the Bus). Plus, you’re not held up by general car traffic, especially starting from somewhere like Brisbane.

This rail experience combines comfort with Queensland’s coastal scenery, but it does come with trade-offs.

✅ Pros

  • Scenic & Relaxing – Offers stunning views of Queensland’s coast and countryside that you won’t see from the highway or sky.
  • Comfortable Travel – With tilt-train technology, wide seats, lie-flat options, and onboard services, it’s more spacious than a bus.
  • Unique Experience – Riding the Spirit of Queensland is an iconic travel adventure in itself, not just a means of transport.

❌ Cons

  • Time-Consuming – The train takes about 24 hours to reach Cairns, plus extra time to connect to Port Douglas.
  • Extra Transfer Needed – You’ll still need to arrange a shuttle, private transfer, or car hire from Cairns.
  • Higher Cost – Often more expensive than budget flights, especially if you upgrade to RailBed class for comfort.
  • Limited Flexibility – Trains run on a set schedule with fewer departure options compared to daily flights.

How to Get around Town?

Working out how to get around Port Douglas, just might affect the way you decide to get there.

With it being a small beachside town, pretty much your only options are walking the streets by foot, Hiring a Car (or using your own Car), or booking organised tours with transfers to see the sites.

➡Find your favourite brand & compare prices for your Rental Car HERE

Obviously, walking might not be out of the question, but that’s only if you’re not venturing too far from your hotel in the first place. However, if you stay close to town, you’ll find that almost everything is walkable, including the beach.

Surprisingly, there are a small number of taxis available to get you from A to B and unfortunately, Ubers aren’t around every corner in Port Douglas.
