Day 1 – South Brisbane & South Bank Areas
Let’s start our 5 Day Brisbane Itinerary with an entire day around South Brisbane or South Bank.
Truthfully, if I only had one day to explore the city, this is where I would spend most of my time. There is just so much to do here for a first time visitor, including couples, families, and groups of friends.
➡ Compare prices for Accommodation HERE with Booking.com
Cultural Precinct
The area is bursting with cultural experiences, including museums, art galleries, and libraries. This is all packed into the Cultural Precinct and is mostly FREE to visit.
With traveling displays and new artists coming through all the time, I think I’ve seen something new every time I’ve visited.

Streets Beach
If you’re craving some beach time but don’t want to venture too far out of the city? Then, check out Streets Beach, which is your FREE local man-made beach, swimming pool, and kids’ water splash activity area.
The sparkling blue lagoon gives off major tropical vibes and is surrounded by white, sandy beaches and plants. And the best part? It’s right in the heart of the city!

Brisbane Sign
Are you looking for that picture-perfect location to capture your next Instagram-worthy moment? Visit the iconic Brisbane sign, where every man and his dog climb over the large letters to create the perfect picture!
Even better that the city skyline and high-rise buildings are in the background that speaks – “Yep, I’ve been to Brisbane,” and it’s included in the activity central hub of South bank.

➡ Find Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
Wheel of Brisbane
Next up, we’ll have you admiring the views from one of the highest points in Brisbane City while riding the giant Ferris Wheel.
Enjoy a 30-minute relaxing ride while listening to commentary on the city’s history and interesting facts. Even better, you can ride day, or schedule your Brisbane activities in the evening (both if you like) for a very different experience.

Peace Pagoda
If you’re like me and were around the area for the World Expo 1988, then you might remember the Peace Pagoda. The Nepalese people brought it to Australia as their contribution, and it is the only structure still standing today from the event.
Browse the intricate design and wander through the bottom floor to marvel at the work that went into it.

Day 2 – Lone Pine Sanctuary / Kayak Tour / Eat Street
Lone Pine Sanctuary
Are you new to visiting Australia and wanting to see the local wildlife?
While I’m a big believer in seeing wildlife actually in the wild, this is not always possible for everyone. This is where places like the Lone Pine wildlife Sanctuary Zoo come in handy. Not only that, it is located close to the city with both Bus and Ferry Public Transport.
➡ Book Lone Pine Tickets HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
While you might think there are just Koalas there, you can in fact, see so much more. They have been in business since 1927 and gradually increased their variety over the years. Today, the facility houses crocodiles, kangaroos, and Tasmanian devils and I’ve recently seen the sheepdog and wild bird show.

Kayak Tour
Exploring the River from a ferry might be good enough for you, but paddling on a kayak could be even better. I’ve done the sunset Kayaking tour a couple of times over the years, and it can be pretty fun while getting in some exercise.
➡ Book your River Kayak HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
The tour only goes for a couple of hours, and you’re taken by the guide a few hundred metres up and down the river. However, all this happens while ferries and other boats are gliding by, so expect a few waves.
In the end, the unrestricted city skyline at night is phenomenal from this angle.

Eat Street
Have you ever heard of the Eat Street Northshore Markets? If not, you’re in for a treat!
Hop on a CityCat ferry and cruise up the river to Hamilton, where this global food market takes place every Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
But It’s not just any food market, it also has roving entertainment, live music, arcades, and market stalls – plus bars for the parents. Although, since it’s only open on weekends, you might need to adjust your itinerary to suit slightly.

Day 3 – Visit one of the Islands
No visit would be complete without seeing one of the islands offshore. Did you know the South East Queensland region contains some of the world’s largest sand islands?
And guess what? Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island are just a short boat ride away.
Moreton Island
Visiting the lovely Moreton comes with two options! Enjoy a beach day and snorkelling the wrecks, or spend the day completing activities at Tangalooma Island Resort. While the two areas are relatively close to each other, Trust me when I say it’s easier and less time-consuming to try and fit them both in.
Especially when you’re on a day trip.
➡ Find Moreton Island tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
I have day-tripped and stayed at the resort more than ten times, and each trip can be tailored to suit your needs. Most people visit for the dolphin feeding, but others will love the Quad Bike tours, Helicopter Rides, and using the other resort facilities.
On the other hand, it’s brilliant getting the boat to drop you near the wrecks for snorkelling, or taking an organised tour to sand toboggan in the dunes. If that doesn’t take your fancy, then you can just chill out on the stunning beach, or swim for the day.

North Stradbroke Island
Have you ever heard of “Straddie”? It’s the affectionate nickname given to Stradbroke Island, a true gem of a destination off the coast. I have personally visited several times on a day trip, camping on Flinders beach, or a week-long stay in a resort.
➡ Compare prices to Straddie HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
However, you can organise a day trip to Stradbroke Island, which mainly consist of swimming at beaches and freshwater lakes, and short walks over the headland.
Out of Both Islands, Stradbroke can be cheap and convenient to get around with an inbuilt community with public Transport! Either way, this is the second-largest sand island in the world, and you have plenty to keep you entertained.

Day 4 – Mount Coot-tha / Story Bridge Climb
Mount Coot-Tha
Are you tired of just rolling out of bed each morning and starting your day without any excitement? Imagine waking up to the sun peaking over the horizon from one of the best lookout points in Brisbane, at Mt Coot-Tha.
But there are plenty more things to do at Mount Coot-Tha. This also includes wandering around the Gardens or seeing a show at the Planetarium. You’ll have plenty to keep you entertained with a range of facilities like the Cosmos Dome, exhibition area, mini-theater, observatory, and Galaxy gift shop.

Story Bridge Climb
I’ve done the Story Bridge Climb a couple of times while living here, during the day and night. While I think it’s hard to recommend the best time for you, I would say it’s worth doing at least once.
➡ Book your Bridge Climb HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
The experience lets you take in the stunning city views and learn about its construction. It will take a few hours of your time for the safety briefing, changing clothes, and the gradual climb. But overall, I want you to take it all in and know you’re standing on one of the best vantage points in the city.

Day 5 – XXXX Brewery / Botanic Gardens / City Hall
Brewery Tour
You can’t come home from a holiday in Queensland without seeing how the local beer is made. If you’re a fan of beer, then the XXXX Brewery tour is the perfect for you.
But if not, then it still is interesting to see how it’s all made and walking through the factory.
The brewery tour lasts around 90 minutes and includes some beer tasting, which is always a bonus. This beer is an icon, and its heritage dates back over a hundred years.

City Botanic Gardens
Check out the City Botanic Gardens if you’re looking for a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. While you can visit any time of the day for free, special events can be held throughout the year to spark more interest.
As the original botanic gardens in the city, they’re brimming with history and charm.
Take a stroll among the Weeping Fig Avenue or pause to admire the ornamental ponds. You’ll also find an impressive Bamboo Grove, a stunning Walter Hill Fountain, and the Brolgas sculpture.

City Hall
The City Hall Building is an integral part of the city’s history and architecture.
Adjacent to King George Square, the grand building boasts sweeping marble staircases, vaulted ceilings, chandeliers, and a mosaic-tiled floor.
Honestly, this should be at the top of your list of things to do in Brisbane for free.
Take it that one step further and take the 15 minute clock tower tour, which includes a ride in a beautiful, old, hand-operated lift and a bird’s-eye view of the city. While this tour is still free, you need to book in advance as spaces are limited and it can be busy.
Fun Fact: This was used in the filming of “Boy Swallows Universe”.

Where to Stay?
So you’re planning a trip to Brisbane, but you need help figuring out where to stay? One of my best tips for a 5 day Brisbane Itinerary would be to choose a suburb or area based near the activities you have planned for your trip.
Therefore, the CBD, Southbank, or South Brisbane areas would be ideal based on the options today.
➡ Find Brisbane Accommodation HERE with Booking.com
However, If you’re on a tight budget, there are plenty of affordable areas to stay in Brisbane, especially getting further out of the city. But if you’re looking to splurge on a luxury high-rise with sweeping river views, well, you’ve got options there, too.

Best time to visit?
When it comes down to a good time to visit this wonderful city, I think any time of year is ideal. But of course, it all depends on what kind of activities you’re interested in doing.
- If you’re the type who enjoys diving into water activities and getting your tan on, then getting close to summer would definitely be the best time to come.
- On the other hand, if you prefer exploring the great outdoors and all its bushy glory, then winter would be ideal for your 5 day Brisbane Itinerary.
➡ Check out Brisbane Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
But no matter what time you decide to stay in Brisbane, one thing is for sure – you’re in for a fabulous time!

Is it Safe to visit?
I have lived in Brisbane for over 20 years, and I think it’s incredibly safe to explore. But there are always a few common sense precautions that you should take to ensure your safety while visiting. This includes keeping an eye on your property and not walking around in dark alleys or unfamiliar areas.
With that being said, most of Brisbane is very well-lit and offers plenty of excellent transportation options, such as buses, trains, and taxis. So as long as you keep your wits about you, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy all that this exciting city has to offer without any worries.

How to get around?
When it comes to getting around, there are many ways you can do it. Personally, I prefer the flexibility of having my own car. Being on a time-dependent schedule, I need to have the ability to stop or go whenever I please.
➡Find your favourite brand & compare prices for your Rental Car HERE
This is why I love road trips or even hiring a car once I reach my destination. Plus, having my own car, I feel like I have control over my journey, allowing me to better immerse myself in the local culture and explore more hidden gems along the way.
On the other hand, if you think figuring out how to navigate public transportation in a new city can be intimidating, don’t worry; I’ve got you covered. I created a helpful video on my YouTube channel that guides you on how to get around Brisbane without a car.

Wrap Up!
In the end, your 5 Day Brisbane Itinerary can be tailored to suit your needs or swapped out for other options. And if you don’t like what you see here, then you can always explore my additional Brisbane post inspiration.
