From riverside walks, city views, to lively precincts, the Queensland capital offers a relaxed but vibrant nightlife that suits more than just partygoers. So trying to find things to in Brisbane at night is a common search for first-time visitors.

The tricky part is knowing where to go, especially if you’re short on time or unfamiliar with the city layout. Many visitors worry Brisbane might feel quiet at night, aren’t sure which areas are safe, or don’t know whether to focus on dining, views, events, or casual night-time activities.

After living in Brisbane for 25 years and exploring it both as a local and with visiting friends, I’ve pulled together this guide to help first-time visitors make the most of their evenings. So you can confidently plan your nights and enjoy the city after dark.

Fun things to do in Brisbane at Night!

I find the darks sky’s definitely change the experience in the city, the beauty and what you’re seeing. While I have plenty of content surrounding the Queensland capital and the things to do. As a local, I felt I needed to single out my best highlights and things to do after the sun goes down in the city.

This includes whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family, but in particular, if you’re a first-time tourist!

⏱️ Short on Time?

While I have plenty of options mentioned below, I firstly wanted to single out my favourites, or the highlighted attractions that should be FIRST on your list.

  • 1. Ride the River City Cats for the most amazing Skyline views.
  • 2. Drinks at The Terrace Rooftop Bar at the Emporium Hotel.
  • 3. Explore Eat Street Markets Northshore,
  • 4. Take an evening stroll or dine at Howard Smith Wharves,
  • 5. Visit the newest Lookout Sky Deck on top of the Star Grand Casino

While these are my top 5 activities, please read on below for more detail on these and even MORE choices added to my list today. Or, click for my video below to get a taste of our first-hand experience.

1. Mount Coot-tha Lookout

While most of today’s list is located in the CBD, Mount Coot-tha is one of the best places to visit at night, seeing how big the City actually is with the lights shining bright.

The café and ice cream shop is still open until 9pm or 10pm depending on the night, so could be an incredible date night or a family outing. Plus the bonus, there isn’t as many people visiting in the evening, so an empty parking space is easy to find.

The panoramic views from the lookout provide a breath-taking perspective of Brisbane’s glittering skyline. This makes it a perfect spot for stargazing or simply enjoying the city lights.

I’ve often come here for some slow shutter photography and also a vantage point for the city’s fireworks events like Riverfire.

2. Eat Street

Located at Northshore Brisbane, the Eat Street Markets is a must-visit for food lovers and anyone looking to enjoy a vibrant night out. Matt and I have often used it as a couple date night, or just hanging out with a group of friends.

They are open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening from 4 pm to 10 pm, and this bustling market is set up in repurposed shipping containers, creating a unique and lively atmosphere.

Eat Street Markets at Northshore Brisbane

They offers an eclectic mix of cuisines from around the world. So, whether you are craving Asian street food, American-style burgers, fresh seafood, or French pastries, you should find something that tickles your palate.

You’ll notice Families and kids tend to dominate early on in the night , with friends, groups and couples hanging around later for the live music, entertainment and bars.

And the best news is, you can catch a City Cat ferry from the City to Northshore Hamilton ferry Terminal and only walk 500 metres to get to Eat Street

3. Sky Deck

One of the most spectacular NEW and best lookouts in Brisbane is visiting the Sky Deck platform, but more importantly, how the landscape changes from this point at night. It’s open from 630am in the morning until 1030pm at night, or midnight on Friday and Saturdays, so it’s very convenient to visit whenever you’re available.

Best of all, It’s FREE to visit and you can stay on the platform as long as you like. However, if you book to stay at The Star Grand Hotel, you have private, priority lift access from the accommodation.

You have the chance to marvel at the cityscape from an elevated vantage point and I find it’s particularly enchanting at Sunset. But, it’s not just about the Views, it’s a versatile space perfect for some pre-dinner cocktails, a romantic dinner, or a group catchup with friends.

On the downside, the night time city lights tend to reflect off the Glass/Perspex barrier and it’s not always the best for photos. I also find the lights under the see-through floor are too bright at night and the effect of walking over it is definitely better during the day.

4. Emporium Lookout

Located in South Brisbane, the Emporium Hotel offers the Terrace Rooftop Bar and although very similar to the Sky deck, this is positioned on the opposite side of the Brisbane River and provides a different prospective (viewing the CBD).

Unfortunately, the sun actually sets behind you, but still exceptional for after work drinks in a luxurious space. It’s located on level 21 of the hotel and even the lift displays are entertaining on the way up.

It’s still FREE to enter. However, the cocktails typically range from $18 to $25 each, while wines and beers are priced from $10 to $20. The bar also offers a selection of gourmet snacks and dishes. There is also less of a glass barrier than the Skydeck, so photo’s are a little better in views of the city’s skyline.

Take it that one step further and you can stay at the Emporium Hotel to take advantage of the famous infinity pool overlooking the city.

5. South Bank Parklands

South Bank Parklands offers a multitude of activities to enjoy at night and where you’ll find something happening throughout the year.

Truthfully, If there is only area you have time for when wandering Brisbane at Night – the South Bank precinct is where you’ll need to go. That’s why, it’s also one of the best areas to base yourself in Brisbane, while your exploring the city.

While most people visit Streets Beach during the day, you’ll still find plenty of people taking a dip for an evening swim. Summertime in Queensland (or even just outside of this time) means the water will be perfect for a cool down or a way for you to stay active while on holidays.

Wander through South Bank and see the Nepalese Peace Pagoda at Night

Apart from that, the Rainforest Walk is still open to stroll through, the Brisbane Sign (This blog Header image) and you can even see the Nepalese Pagoda (although walking inside is closed at night). You can also participate in the nightly FREE exercise or Yoga Classes, browse the markets, or stroll the paths for a delectable dish at one of the many restaurants or cafes.

Visiting throughout the year brings different exhibitions and displays. I’ve seen the Noodle Markets, Cultural Festivals with live music and even the Brisbane Riverfire Festival brings many different art pieces. Additionally, you could be lucky to see the Grand Arbour Walk presented in Chinese lanterns or thousands of tiny lights.

6. Riding the City Cat River Ferry

One of the most enchanting ways to experience Brisbane at night is by taking a ferry cruise along the Brisbane River in a City Cat. As you glide smoothly through the water, the city unveils its stunning nightscape, with reflections of twinkling lights dancing on the river’s surface.

This relaxing and picturesque journey offers a unique perspective of Brisbane’s illuminated skyline, showcasing landmarks like the Story Bridge, Eagle Street Pier & Riverside, and the South Bank precinct in their full nocturnal splendour.

What’s more, you can’t beat the cost with the current Public Transport fees at just “50 cents” for one way travel. So, it’s both an affordable and delightful way to explore the city.

The City Cat provides the perfect setting to unwind, whether you’re a tourist soaking in the new sights or if you’re a local like me, rediscovering how pretty it can be to travel around on the ferry at night.

I find it’s a must do, even if it’s just to get from point A to point B. And you can find out more with my video HERE about using the Public Transport in Brisbane.

7. Story Bridge Climb

The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is one of Brisbane’s most iconic experiences, especially at night. This is when climbers are treated to stunning 360-degree views of the city’s illuminated skyline, over the Brisbane River.

However, it’s important to note that the night climb is not actually at Night, as opposed to you ascending at SUNSET (which is still really pretty) for a twilight experience. By the time you get down, it will be dark, with the city lights shining bright.

The climbing experience lasts about two hours and includes a safety briefing, equipment, and a guided walk to the summit and partway across the bridge. You can purchase Adult tickets around $129 to $150, with discounts for children, students, and groups.

It’s suitable for anyone aged six and up (minimum height 110cm), but children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. After completing it twice myself (once at Twlight), the experience is NOT physically demanding, but does involve several staircases and is best suited to those comfortable with heights and moderate activity.

8. Glow Worms

Glow worms are fascinating creatures that produce their own light through bioluminescence. Surprisingly, there is a cool experience to see these tiny light displays in the Gold Coast Hinterland, but the FREE spot is only available at night.

This involves visiting the Natural Bridge Waterfall in the Springbrook National Park and hanging out around the 1 kilometres loop track until after the sun sets.

This is when you’ll Find the Glow Worms along the Walking Path Trails and underneath the waterfall (In the Cave). Where they will light up, like stars in the night sky.

While you can visit this one your own, for those without a car or knowledge in finding the area, there are organised tours available to book. Just know that glow worms are quite rare and not found in many places around the world, so this is a very unique experience.

This glowing phenomenon serves to attract prey and mates, and is a mesmerizing sight for all visitors.

9. Drone & Fireworks Show

There is no better way to enjoy the night sky’s of Brisbane than with a Fireworks or Drone Show. These spectacular events draw very large crowds throughout the year and typically held during major festivals, holidays, and public celebrations, such as New Year’s Eve, Riverfire, and the Brisbane Festival.

Tens of thousands of people gather to witness these stunning shows, filling the riverbanks, parks, and many vantage points around the city. The drone shows add a modern twist to the traditional fireworks, combining cutting-edge technology with artistic creativity, creating cultural learning that captivate audiences of all ages.

These events are FREE to attend, making them accessible to everyone. So, If you’re planning to visit Brisbane, make sure to check the event calendar and experience the magic of the Fireworks and Drone Shows for yourself.

Riverfire in September is one of my personal favourites including displays by local Airforce with C-17 Globemaster’s doing fly-bys in the city. Although, the latest addition of the Drones was exciting to watch to.

10. Wheel of Brisbane

The Wheel of Brisbane is located in the heart of Southbank and one of the more prominent features in the city that stands out in the evening. It costs about $22 per adult, but there are discounts for concessions and families.

The 60-metre-tall observation wheel is perfect for tourists, first-time visitors, or even locals that have never done it before. We’ve always got the gondola to ourselves, but this could change in a high season.

I have to admit, that after completing the ride in the day and night, my preference slightly favours THE DAY TIME. But, this is more about the reflective glass gondola for photo’s, than the experience itself.

You still receive an informative commentary about Brisbane history and landmarks and it’s cool to watch everything around you with the city lights.

11. Howard Smith Wharves & Felons Brewery

The Howard Smith Wharves in Brisbane was redeveloped back in 2018 and surprisingly, this was my first time to visit. This included introducing the Crystalbrook Vincent 5 star hotel, and nestled beneath the Story Bridge.

The vibrant riverside precinct is a haven for those seeking leisurely moments and delightful experiences. At night, the area transforms into a picturesque wonderland where lights and the Story Bridge create a mesmerizing backdrop.

Bar & Seating at Felons Brewery Howard Smith Wharves

Felons Brewery, one of the gems of Howard Smith Wharves, offers a relaxed yet lively atmosphere ideal for casual drinks with friends or a romantic date night. The brewery boasts a diverse selection of craft beers and you can just imagine sitting back, sipping on a refreshing beer.

The outdoor seating allows visitors to soak in the views and they even have cute bean bags areas set up for a more intimate feel. The ambiance is lovely for unwinding after a long day, engaging in cheerful conversations, or simply admiring the beauty of Brisbane.

12. Strolling the Many Bridges

Walking over the Brisbane Bridges at night is an experience that transforms a simple journey from one place to another into a captivating adventure. As the cityscape transitions from day to night, most the bridges come alive with vibrant lights and different colours, to create that ambiance.

Plus you’re not short on choices! Between the Neville Bonner Bridge stretching from Southbank to the new Star Casino, The Kangaroo Point Bridge from Riverside to Kangaroo Point, The Goodwill Bridge from the Botanic gardens to the Maritime Museum and even the famous Story Bridge you can walk over.

I suggest mapping out your path and using the Bridge’s, along with the Ferry Rides to make the most out of getting around Brisbane.

13. Kayak Tour

Did you know that Brisbane has Sunset kayaking tours on the Brisbane River.  Ok, not officially at night, but they do end that way, and you have a little light on the back of your kayak, so other boats can see you.

➡  Find Kayak Tours HERE with GYG

You paddle through the waters of the setting sun, witnessing the city transitioning from day to night. As twilight descends, the river’s surface becomes a shimmering mirror reflecting the vibrant colours of the sky.

This guided tour typically lasts a few hours and costs about $100 per person (although slightly cheaper during the day). The excursion includes all necessary equipment and safety briefing, making it accessible even for beginners.

Is Brisbane Safe to wander around at Night?

As a 25 year Local to Brisbane, I generally consider it a safe city at night, particularly in popular areas like South Bank, the CBD, and well-patrolled entertainment precincts. But, there are different variations of safety, and I go into several of Brisbane’s Safety concerns here in more detail.

However, as with any major city, risks increase in busy nightlife zones such as Fortitude Valley, where alcohol-fuelled disputes and petty theft can occur, especially late on weekends or during major events. Since I’m not a young teenager anymore, I tend to avoid this area at night.

CBD at night from the Sky Deck Platform from the Star Casino in Brisbane

While South Bank and central parts of the CBD are among the safest areas due to good lighting, regular police presence, and crowds, caution is advised in less crowded spots, or dark alleys.

Keep your wits about you and use common sense, but I have a few points here to help round it down specific to after dark activities in Brisbane.

  • Always stick to main streets and well-lit areas.
  • Avoid secluded parks or alleys.
  • Travel with friends when possible.
  • Use public transport instead of walking long distances alone.
  • Keep valuables secure to deter pickpockets.
  • Stay alert to your surroundings,
  • Avoid excessive drinking.
  • trust your instincts and if something feels off, remove yourself from the situation.

Any any case, plan your route, and always let someone know your whereabouts, and using safety apps or devices. I’m sure you can confidently enjoy Brisbane’s vibrant nightlife while minimising risks.
