Queensland hosts many festivals throughout the year, but the FREE Brisbane Riverfire event draws more than 500 thousands visitors from around the world. Is the Riverfire Event Worth seeing in Brisbane?
Overall, I think the Riverfire Festival in Brisbane is a must-see event, lighting up the city’s skyline with a spectacular fireworks display, set to a curated soundtrack. Together with the military displays, flight manoeuvres, and the multitude of vantage points, It’s well worth seeing at least once is your lifetime!
I’ve spent more than 20 years in Brisbane and never missed a Riverfire Festival. I’ve watched it from TV at home, on the 36th floor of my prior workplace in the city, on a dive boat with 12 other people, or among the crowds on the ground.
It doesn’t matter where you see it, the colours and lights will be phenomenal. Surprisingly, I even think this is a much bigger display than the other fire works held in Brisbane, which includes Christmas and New Years Eve.
What is the Brisbane Festival?
Brisbane Festival is one of the city’s most exciting annual events held in the capital. This celebrates arts, culture, and entertainment guest for over three weeks in September.
The festival transforms Brisbane with a dynamic program of theatre, music, dance, comedy, circus, cabaret, and visual arts, showcasing both local and international talent.
The festival brings the city to life with immersive installations, live performances, and pop-up events across various venues, from the South Bank Cultural Precinct to the Powerhouse, West End, and beyond.
Just know, many of the events are FREE, while others offer unique ticketed experiences.
The entire festival’s grand finale is the FREE Riverfire event, a spectacular fireworks display for 30 minutes, one Saturday night in September.
This is all complete with aerial displays and maneuvers by the Helicopters and large Planes of the Australian Defence Force. Tourists will come from far or wide for the one night, but many of locals enjoy the festival over the three weeks.
Note: This is a televised event and will be possible to watch from the comfort of your own home.

Where can you watch the fireworks?
You can watch Riverfire from anywhere in the city from New Farm, Kangaroo Point, Riverside, North Quay, Southbank, and South Brisbane. The locals have their favourite spots, and you’ll find the popular ones get busy from lunchtime (like Wilsons Outlook or Eagle Street Pier).
The fireworks display starts around 6:45pm (After the sun sets) and runs for about 30 minutes. There are several firework barges on the Brisbane River, along with some set off from the tops of Buildings.

Your Best Riverfire Vantage Points!
The main sections will all have fireworks right in front of you, or you will be in between 2 barges. Some of these vantage point are:
- South Bank Parklands
- River Terrace, Kangaroo Point
- Below Kangaroo Point Cliffs
- Captain Burke Park, Kangaroo Point
- Wilson Outlook, Fortitude Valley
The closer you are to the Story Bridge or South Bank, the busier it will be and the quickest to fill up with people.
For the Photo’s this blog, I was located on Bowen Terrace, halfway in-between the Story Bridge and Wilson Outlook. I got there at 430pm, ready for the Military display at 5pm, and the Fireworks at 6.45pm.
As you can see from the photos, I was not perfectly in line with the Bridge, but still a great location. The fence line was already taken but still able to shoot higher than the crowd due to the elevated ground.
BEST TIP – Anywhere along the river will have a decent viewpoint and don’t be too concerned with the crowds.

Bridge Views
Wilson Outlook is the best position for a Story Bridge viewpoint. Although, the City Reach Boardwalk (Riverside) is also great. Riverside area is closer to the bridge, but difficult to frame in the whole picture without a wide-angle lens.
Both locations have limited room, and you will need to get there early. Many will bring chairs, Picnic blankets, and food to mark their spot for the afternoon.
Southbank & Kangaroo Point
Southbank is the busiest for tourists, family’s and will fill up early. However, there are plenty of shops, eateries, and Bars around here to keep you entertained before the night starts.
Any spots around Kangaroo point are huge too, but none of these will have direct views of the bridge (but you will have barge fireworks).
The Victoria Bridge has been an option in past Riverfire events, but unfortunately it was closed this year. I wouldn’t reply on other bridges either, like the Goodwill Bridge, or the new Neville Bonner Bridge.
From the River?
Do you have your own boat? Then purchasing a Riverfire Boat permit is an option and brilliant for limiting crowds. This will need to be organised well in advance and there are lots of rules around times and positions.
Another option are the tourist boats or river cruises, but you will be charged for the convenience. Most of these river cruises will book out in advance too, so get in as soon as the date is announced at the start of the year.

What are the Military Displays?
Around dusk, we started with a military display flying through the city. First up was the C17A Globemaster completing two flyovers through Brisbane city and getting pretty close to the buildings.

Next, there will be several Army Aviation helicopters flying over, hovering, or completing manoeuvres. This will all take about 30 minutes and much enjoyment for the crowds.

As another option, a test flyover of these Military aircraft happens on the Thursday before the event. And times for this will be announced on any Local Brisbane news outlet.
This is a brilliant way to see the Flyover without the crowds on the Brisbane Riverfire evening.

How can you get into the city?
With the crowds and limited parking, it’s best to take public train transport or stay at one of the Brisbane hotels to walk around. The public transport options are often FREE and I like catching a train to either Fortitude Valley, Central Station or South Brisbane, depending what your viewpoint will be.
Bus, Taxi, or Uber transportation will be limited towards the city, and depending on where you are, traffic will be horrendous. I’ve even seen many Ubers deny a booking if it goes anywhere near, or through the city around this time.
The Story Bridge is also closed for the Riverfire event, along with many roads around the city.

Where to Stay in Brisbane
You will find that most of the Brisbane accommodation in prime viewpoints or with balconies are either private housing or booked out well in advance (at least by 12 months).
However, if you do get one booked, this will allow you to stay in your room and watch the event from there.

Alternatively, there will be other Hotels or apartments available shortly before the event – these will have windows or a short walking distance to the other vantage points.

Can you see the Fireworks from Mt Coot tha?
If you don’t want to be in the midst of the crowds in the city, Mount Coot-tha is a great option to watch the Brisbane Riverfire. You will hear some cracks and fireworks popping in the distance, and you’re at a high viewpoint to see them reach over the buildings.
If you have some excellent zoom on your camera, you might still be able to get some great photos. But, to the naked eye, for me these are too far away.
