Review: Big4 Sandstone Point Caravan Park & Resort

If you’re planning a family getaway or a coastal escape near Brisbane, the BIG4 Sandstone Point Holiday Resort often pops up as one of the top recommendations. With its prime location right next to the iconic Sandstone Point Hotel and overlooking Bribie Island, it’s a popular choice for both locals and travellers.

The challenge, however, is figuring out if it truly lives up to the hype. With so many caravan parks and resorts across South East Queensland, first-time visitors often wonder: Is the BIG4 Sandstone Point worth the cost? Are the facilities as good as they look online? And does it suit families, couples, or groups best?

After many stays over the years, I’ve had both good and bad experiences staying in the park. So, In this review, I’ll share my honest thoughts on what you can expect at the BIG4 Sandstone Point Holiday Resort. That way, you’ll know exactly whether it’s the right fit for your next Queensland getaway.

My Review of Big4 Sandstone Point Caravan Park & Resort

The Sandstone Point Caravan Park & Holiday Resort is located at Sandstone Point (please see location map HERE), near the Bribie Island Bridge. If you take the Bribie Island Exit from the M1 Bruce Highway, there is only another 20 minutes until get to the BIG4 on your right.

Overall, My review of the Big4 Sandstone Point Caravan Park is a positive one and would love to stay there again the future. However, while they keep adding new facilities and the prices sky-rocket to the point of “Excessive”, I think it makes it less affordable for the average camper.

Most people won’t spend more than $100 a night for their whole family and I think their fixed accommodation can be extreme, even for a standard Caravan Park. Not only that, but these same prices are comparable to some luxury style hotel rooms. So, I know where I would rather stay?

With that said, I have stayed in the here several times over the past few years (Including the first weekend they opened). And, I think It’s still a brilliant way for a group of friend to get together. This includes having a few drinks, and chilling out in the pool or waterpark (yep the big kids can use it too).

For this reason, I think it’s worth staying at least once, and I might go back – if I see a good deal.

✅ Pros

• Fantastic facilities with multiple pools (including a large waterpark for kids), a swim-up bar, heated spa, playgrounds, tennis court, etc.
• Very family-friendly and well-suited it is for families with kids, with plenty of entertainment and safe play areas.
• Great location, set right on the shores of Pumicestone Passage, between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
• Variety of accommodation types: from powered caravan/tent sites to villas, safari tents, and overwater villas, giving options for different budgets and comfort levels.
• Excellent landscaping & layout: sites and cabins are spaced well, clean, and amenities (kitchens, laundry, bathrooms) are well-maintained.

❌ Cons

• VERY Pricey for camping sites & fixed accommodations (villas, safari tents) and overall costs (extras, food, etc.) add up.
• Noise / crowding, as it’s popular and busy, it can get loud, and waiting times for things (pool bar, cafes) can be longer during peak periods.
• Rules and restrictions with parking & day visitors (wristbands, visitor access limitations) that felt a bit heavy-handed.

Types of Accommodation

Tent & Powered Sites

There are sites available all over the park, and with several amenities blocks and camp kitchens, it’s really doesn’t matter where you go. Most sites are a decent size, with plenty of room, and have a patch of Astroturf to park beside.

There are heaps of trees around, so if you’re booking a few sites for a group, you need to be mindful of this if sharing gazebos, etc.

Safari Tents

The Safari tents are located up the back of the park and come in a Luxury Size for two, or family size for four people. This is your glamping option with all the facilities available in the park, along with luxury tented housing.

From the outside, they seem to have plenty of room and a nice addition, if you’re not into rough camping. They come fitted with Air-conditioning, TV’s, and a bathroom, as well as an alfresco balcony and dining area.

Luxury / Studio / Multi-Bedroom Villas

There are luxury Villas for two, Studio Villa sleeping five people, and multi-bedroom villas for those large groups and different family’s sharing. Numbers can cater from 2 guests up to 12 guests, depending on the group you have visiting. Normally featuring an open plan lounge and dining areas, bathroom/s, alfresco dining, Bunk beds, or trundles for kids.

Personally, while the rooms here are amazing, the thought of staying in a caravan park for the prices they charge is not worth it.

Especially when I’ve compared it to other luxury hotels like my stay at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore! I mean, can you believe it was cheaper to stay there?

Is there Car Parking available?

The rule is one Car per site and I can understand this with a busy park like this. The only time I’ve had an issue, was when the entire Caravan Park was empty due to a pending cyclone and everyone cancelled their site at the Park.

Cyclone or not, we still stayed at the Park with our friends and ended up with a block of 10 sites to ourselves ( Could have fit 4 cars on our site alone). We sleep in a campervan with a Gazebo tied to it. Therefore, we like having another car to help us to exit the Park during the day and visit Bribie Island. As there was no one else around, the second car also provided a little windbreak from the winds.

I understand there are second car rules in place to limit a crowded park. However with the park almost empty, Management still threatened to charge us for a second site with another car, even though we were still only using our own site. As the Park was three-quarters empty, I was hoping for some understanding or allowances, but I guess not!

In the end, our awning broke from the wind and had to be replaced. This was obviously a little disappointing and lessoned our enjoyment.

Note: You’re allowed to bring a second car. However, it must be parked in the car park across the road. Therefore, If you have a big group staying in the Villa or Cabins, you have to walk your luggage in from there. Would you find this very convenient?

Facilities in the Park

The Water Park

Well, who wouldn’t love this one, most of the time you will see all the kids hanging out here, while the adults chill out in the heated pool. Or you will find adults chasing the younger kids around over all the slides and spray each other with water.

The big bucket is pretty cool and is constantly being filled up. Every few minutes the bucket will be full and pour the whole lot out a once, over the top of you. The pressure can be high, so hang onto the smaller kids. Easy enough to pull some swimming suits off too, so watch out for that.

Note: There is no lifeguard supplied at the waterpark or pool. Safety is your own responsibility, and adults should be supervising children at all times.

Heated Pool

The Pool is not only being heated but has plenty of room, and the bean bags are so comfy. With most of the kids in the waterpark (right next to the pool), it’s an easy way for the adults to chill without too much jumping and splashing around.

There is also a small wading pool for the little ones (heated and joined to the big pool), or you can just sit and relax while they splash around. I find it pretty easy to get a lounge chair, but they are all on a first-come-first-serve basis. There is a couple of day beds that, although they have a two-hour limit to share around.

Don’t forget Bean Bag Island, full of palm trees to relax the day away, getting some sun on the AstroTurf.

Restaurant & Bar

If you didn’t bring your own food, or just want the night off there is a restaurant and bar. I haven’t eaten much myself here, but seen a lot of snack food and burger meals around. Apart from that, there is a Cocktail Menu where you can spoil yourself with a few special, umbrella drinks.

While the quality might be ok, the prices are on the excess side for some items like the Cocktails (Average $16 per drink). But you don’t need to carry around money, when everything can be charged to the site and paid on exit (just like a hotel).

Camp Kitchens

I have seen a few camp kitchens around this Park, and certainly up to standard. I find them very comfortable with the room and fitted with everything you need. Not sure it’s at every camp kitchen, but the ones I’ve used had a Barbeque, Kettle, Toaster, Microwave, fridge, and a vending machine.

Amenities Blocks

There a several Amenities blocks around the caravan Park that are all fitted with toilets, showers, and bathroom sinks. The showers have two sections – one with a seat for placing your gear, etc, and the shower itself. I have never had to wait for a shower yet (even during busy periods), so must be enough around to suffice the park residents.

Sometime, I’ve found the locks broken and others getting stuck in the stalls. But, this is probably just general maintenance and could happen all the time.

Brick Fire Pit

If your visiting during the winter, come check out the fire pit located at the Sunset Deck. Only available on Friday and Saturday nights, and times are subject to change. But, If there is no fire pit, there is seating here to gather the crowds for an afternoon drink.

Jumping Pillow

I remember going on one of these a while ago, but the fun is more suited for the kids on this one. I do like the fact that the BIG4 has a Shade cover over the top of it. I think it helps big time with the summer heat and kids forgetting they need sunscreen.

Tennis Court

Will have to try out these Tennis courts one day, but has been a while since I have played. As mentioned before, I’m a pool girl and more likely to see me there. However, this court does look nice (Photo above) and a great way to entertain yourself without getting in the water.

Playground

Kids will be running around the park together with all their new friends, from one area to another. The playground is another spot for some out-of-pool fun with slides, swings, and areas to climb all over.

Gym

Yes, there are those people that like to exercise while they’re on holiday. I have seen the Gym, but since I only visit for a weekend, my exercising is already scheduled at home.

It’s fully airconditioned and offers a bike, treadmill, rowing machine, elliptical trainer, and weights to give you some variety. You can even watch the TV as you work out.

Go Karts

These Go-Karts are a great idea but find the adults seem to do all the work while the kids sit back and get driven around the park…lol. Single Seaters seem to the more popular though, and often see the kids running around on them.

• Designated Smoking Area
• Free Wi-Fi
• Secondary Car park

Are Animals Allowed?

We don’t have any animals, but some of our friends do. Unfortunately, they either have to leave their pets behind or choose not to come for the weekend. I guess with a busy park, they have the safety and security of the other guests in mind when making this decision.

Is there a Day Visitor pass?

On the other hand, they don’t allow day visitors either and I find this very inconvenient. Most parks we visit have an estimated $5 charge for day visitors, but this Caravan Park doesn’t allow them at all.
