How do you get to Millaa Millaa Falls From Cairns

Millaa Millaa Falls is located near Millaa Millaa (please see location map here), along the Waterfall Circuit, in Tropical North Queensland.

The entire Waterfall Circuit is a 20 kilometres loop road ( Theresa Creek Road) with 3 waterfalls to visit, including Zillie Falls and Ellinjaa Falls.

On a self-drive tour from Cairns, travel about 80 kilometres south on the Bruce Highway and turn right onto the Palmerston Highway.

Continue to follow this road for 50 kilometres, then turn right down Theresa Creek Road and travel two kilometres to find a small signpost directing you to the Falls.

How long is the walk?

Millaa Millaa Falls walk is only a few hundred metres and would have to be the most manageable walk I’ve seen to a waterfall this size in a long time.

You can make it from the Car park to the falls within about 5 minutes, but it will require navigating about 50 stairs.

On the other hand, there is another small car park (about three parks) you can access right in front of the falls, and surprisingly, you can see the falls from your car. Presuming this is there for those with accessibility limitations.

How much time do you need?

If you only have 30 minutes, a quick stopover will undoubtedly be worth it. To be honest, I did all three falls on the waterfall circuit in just over an hour.

But this will depend on what you want to do and how much time you have.

But, if you have a little more time, it’s worth setting more to take in the beauty of this impressive setting and maybe even enjoy a picnic lunch or a dip in the waters below.

If you’re driving your own vehicle, then this will be a little more flexible for time. As well as having the opportunity to see the other two falls on the Waterfall Circuit.

Or, it’s a great place to stop on your Brisbane to Cairns road trip itinerary and only a short via off the highway.

Can you swim?

Yes, you can swim and would have to be one of the biggest waterholes in this area.

But be warned, the falls are about 18 metres and it has tall cliffs that are shaded most of the day, so that means the water is always icy cold. So, ensure you bring a towel and change of clothes to get straight into.

It’s also a photographer’s dream with its cascading lagoons and lush surrounding nature.

Swimming is allowed but it can be cold

Car Parking & Bathrooms?

The car park does have enough room for Busses, large vehicles, and Caravans. However, keep in mind this is a very popular waterfall, and having enough space could be an issue. Therefore, try to visit during the week, early in the morning, and out of school holidays for fewer crowds.

There are a couple of picnic tables, an information board, and public bathrooms (the only ones along this road). There is also plenty of grass to spread out with a blanket, picnic, and take a seat to admire the surroundings.

If you’re lucky enough to visit at a quiet time, you can look out for the elusive Platypus. Otherwise, the sound of water crashing was hypnotising, even though this was just after winter and not as much water for us.

In the end, the only way to get really close to the falls is by swimming, but it’s not the only waterfall near Cairns you can visit!

Most rainfall in the Atherton Tablelands occurs in the summer season, from December to March. Therefore, this is the time Millaa Millaa Falls will be running to its fullest.

It’s also the warmest weather, so the best time to swim.

I took the photo’s in August for this blog, straight after winter. At this time, the rainfall would be limited, and you can see there is still a decent waterfall to see. However, the water temperature was pretty cold and therefore why we didn’t go swimming, but there was someone else who jumped in.
