Is Rottnest Island Worth the Hype for your Bucket List from Perth?

Planning your first trip to Perth always comes with one big question: Is it worth visiting Rottnest Island? With its famous quokkas, turquoise bays, and relaxed island vibe, it’s known as one of Western Australia’s most iconic day trips.

I’ve been there too, trying to weigh up costs, ferry times, and what you can realistically fit into your itinerary. Especially when visiting Perth comes with a long list of amazing things to do.

After experiencing “Rotto” first-hand a couple of times, I’ll walk you through my top reasons it should be on your Perth itinerary. Plus, how to get there, logistics and how much time you really need to enjoy the island properly.

Is Rottnest Island Worth visiting?

I definitely agree that Rottnest Island is worth the journey, in particular for a day trip. The island’s beaches are a slice of heaven, with enticing sand and clear waters. Which I think is a perfect backdrop for relaxation, adventure types, or for those after exciting beachside activities.  

For those who adore the great outdoors, Rottnest offers a natural playground of scenic trails and unique flora and fauna. So, you can imagine sunbathing on the serene shores of The Basin, exploring the rugged coastline by bicycle, or discovering your smile, alongside a friendly quokka.

10 Reasons I like visiting Rottnest Island!

Rottnest Island is located just 19 km from the coast of Fremantle, 33 km from Perth’s city centre, and 22 km from the suburb of Hillarys.

It’s strategically positioned for an ideal day trip escape and is accessible via a short ferry ride. 

This provides an immediate change of scenery from a busy urban life to a maritime haven of serenity. Its accessibility, paired with the island’s considerable charm, contributes to Rottnest’s allure and what drawn me to the Island time and time again!

So what are the specific reasons I like visiting – lets read more into those below!

1. Meeting the Quokkas 

So, here’s the deal with these little bundles of joy! Quokkas are indeed the heart and soul of Rottnest Island. These wonderful macropods seem to have mastered the art of smiling, as though they will start giggling at any moment!   

Despite being wild animals, quokkas are remarkably friendly, making it easy to snap a selfie. They will often set up the perfect photo opportunity for you with their natural curiosity and lack of fear.

Even Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth) has gone viral with a photo like this!

Now, I know we all love to snuggle with cute and cuddly creatures, but with Quokkas, it’s all about respect. So, without touching them, admiring them from a short distance is recommended!

But more importantly, sit or lie down and let them come to you (and they will come to you).

In fact, opting for a fully guided tour is ideal if you’d like all the particulars handled for you. Guides are incredibly knowledgeable about the island’s history and ecology, which is a great way to learn.

3. It’s Known as a Snorkelling or Diving Paradise 

Rottnest Island isn’t just about land based beauty, its marine life is just as stunning and diverse.

You can don snorkelling gear and swim from one of the island’s serene beaches. Or, for a truly immersive experience, connect with one of the local dive companies to explore deeper into Rotto’s underwater world.

Some of the more popular beaches you can check out are: 

• Little Salmon Bay: A sheltered lagoon for beginners or those seeking a relaxed snorkelling session. Here, you’ll swim amidst schools of friendly fish in calm, crystal waters. 
• Parakeet Bay: Another pristine spot for snorkellers, with gentle waves and an array of marine life. Its vast stretch of sand is perfect for sunbathing after your aquatic exploration. 
• Parker Point: Designated as a marine sanctuary, Parker Point is teeming with vibrant corals and fish. The underwater snorkel trail provides an informative journey through the area’s ecological wonders. 
• Henrietta Rocks: For a combination of snorkelling and history, head to Henrietta Rocks to see the ‘Shark’, a shipwreck now home to various fish and serving as an intriguing dive site. 
• Little Armstrong Bay: A more secluded bay, which is a snorkeler’s dream. Its rich marine life and calm waters make it a visual feast for those looking to escape the more populated beaches. 

Reaching these spots is as easy as cycling around Rottnest Island and diving into the transparent waters. 

4. Learn the Military Legacy 

Rottnest Island, though peaceful now, resonates with echoes of its past.

Therefore, its military history is essential to understanding the entire narrative of this Western Australian landmark. Surprisingly, it has been more than a picturesque getaway since it played a pivotal role in Australia’s defence strategies.   

During both World Wars, Rottnest held significant military importance. This includes serving as a prisoner-of-war camp in WWI for those deemed a threat to national security. In WWII, the island had its coastline armed with guns and held many lookout posts, guarding approaches to Perth and Fremantle. 

For history and military buffs, tour old gun emplacements and explore the tunnels that snake through the island.

The military remnants scattered across the island were not mere rusting relics but Rottnest’s true testament to its service to Western Australia and the entire country.  

5. The Aboriginal History 

Before it became known for its quaint quokkas and pristine beaches, Rottnest Island or Wadjemup, deeply represented the cultural significance for the Whadjuk Noongar people. 

When it was connected to the mainland around 6,500 years ago, it was a site for important ceremonies where various Aboriginal communities met for social and trading purposes. Over time, rising sea levels turned Wadjemup into an island, cutting off access from the mainland. 

With the onset of European settlement in the early 1800s, the island was repurposed into a prison and forced labour camp for Aboriginal men and boys. This period is a stark reminder of the suffering endured under colonial policies. 

Today, you can visit the Wadjemup Museum on Digby Drive to learn about the Islands history. Or find you way to the Wadjemup Lighthouse, which is the highest point on the island and constructed in 1896.

6. There is A Beach for Every Wanderer 

Besides the snorkelling, Rottnest Island’s beaches are gorgeous coastal landscapes, each with its own charm and set of wonderful activities. Some of these include:

• For those seeking the sun, simply lounge on the soft sands of Pinky Beach and take in the allure of the ocean with the iconic Bathurst Lighthouse as an impressive backdrop. 
• If you want to immerse yourself in sparkling waters, Geordie Bay is a delight, providing a refreshing escape from the warmth of a summer’s day. 
• For the quieter soul, try Rocky Bay or Ricey Beach, offering a peaceful oasis for sunbathing or a day of relaxation. 
• Snorkelling enthusiasts will find Little Salmon Bay and Parakeet Bay to be wonderful retreats, with the inviting water teeming with marine life.

While the beaches on their own are brilliant for capturing great memories. The stunning coast also provides ample opportunities for snapshots with a quokka, so make sure you’re always looking out for them. 

7. Hiking the Wadjemup Bidi 

If you’re yearning for a deep connection with the landscape of Rottnest Island, strap on your hiking boots and hit the Wadjemup Bidi.

Know that the Bidi means “trail” or “track” in the Noongar language and is a respectful nod to the island’s Aboriginal custodians. It comprises five distinct sections, each with its own character and story. 

Across these trails, you’re walking through history and culture, surrounded by environmentally significant landmarks. This 45 km network of trails offers an immersive experience, spanning the entire width of the island.  

They offer a multitude of sights from rugged coastal headlands to serene inland lakes and incredible views across the ocean. More importantly, you’re covering areas that the general tourist won’t see, with secluded and hidden gems.

8. You can ride around on a bike. 

Explore Rottnest Island at your own pace and with an eco friendly twist by cycling.

Biking is undoubtedly the preferred mode of transport (what I normally do), as it’s a delightful way for a casual rider or fitness enthusiast to soak in the landscape. 

With dedicated bike paths and minimal vehicle traffic, you’re in control!

For me, I enjoyed going wherever the roads took me and spending as much time (or as little) at each location I found. Ultimately, it’s a quick way of getting around without relying on the Public bus timetable. 

9. Find a delectable Seafood meal. 

If you’re anything like me, an excellent feed of prawns or freshly cooked salmon can be enjoyed after a day of adventure or relaxation.

And, you’ll find that the local cuisine can be a magnificent highlight of your visit. 

The island has several eateries where you can savour the freshest seafood caught from the surrounding waters. And dining options range from casual beachside shacks to more refined restaurants, each with its own take on preparing the ocean’s bounty. 

Be sure to check out some of your options, like Thomson’s Rottnest or Aristos Waterfront. These are both near the main settlement on the island.

They have become favourites for seafood aficionados seeking to satisfy their palates while observing some superb ocean views. 

10. Find more wildlife than just the quokkas. 

Rottnest Island’s marine reserve is home to a mesmerizing collage of varied marine life. This includes colourful fish and green turtles weaving gracefully through coral reefs. Not only that, but the rocky shores serve as an ideal habitat for a diverse species, including the western rock lobster.

Although man-made, the main settlement areas also offer fantastic nature and wildlife. So, walking through Thomson Bay, you can observe parrots, bobtail lizards, and silver gulls. Additionally, during the late winter season, you can witness the spectacle of the humpback whale (MegapteraIts novaeangliae) migration from the West End. 

At any time of the year, the Cathedral Rocks viewing platform is where you want to go. It offers a prime opportunity to observe the playful antics of long-nosed fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and the basking of the Australian sea lions.   

I was even standing on the beach in the water and a large stingray swam by (see photo below).

In the end, the island has five marine sanctuary zones with strict ‘no take’ regulations, barring a few exemptions. This is to ensure the protection of its incredible ecosystem and biological diversity. Otherwise, remember these are wild animals and be mindful not to feed or touch them.

How to get to Rottnest Island?

Accessing Rottnest Island is straightforward, with several ferry companies (Rottnest Express, SeaLink Rottnest, and Rottnest Fast Ferries) offering regular departures from Perth daily.

These are designed for those planning a day trip to soak in the island’s splendour or even an extended stay to immerse yourself in its beauty.

How many days do you need there? 

The duration of your stay on Rottnest Island can vary based on your interests and available time. If your schedule is tight, rest assured that a single day on the island can suffice to get a taste of its stunning beaches & surroundings, and meet the resident quokkas.

With that said, if you have the flexibility, consider extending your visit to a weekend or, ideally, three to four days.

This extended stay allows for a deeper connection with the island’s natural wonders, cultural heritage, and leisurely pace. Thus ensuring a more comprehensive and fulfilling experience of all that Rottnest Island incorporates. 

Can you walk around on your own? 

You can absolutely embrace the freedom to walk around Rottnest Island alone. However, while the island is relatively small, journeying solely on foot may limit how far you can venture or restrict what you see.

So, most visitors find that hiring push bikes is the preferred mode of travel for getting around.   

Alternatively, the convenience of the Adams Hop-on Hop-off bus presents another reliable mode of transportation. This way, you can rest your legs without missing the scenic landscapes.

Otherwise, consider booking guided tours for a more structured exploration. This guarantees an informative and structured visit to all the main sites on the island. 

Note: Rottnest Island is 11 kilometres long and 4.5 kilometres wide.

When is the best time to see the Quokkas? 

Quokkas tend to be nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night.

This means throughout the day, they generally prefer to spend their time sleeping and resting, often nestled under the shelter of shrubs or bushes.

But know that on each of my day trips, I did manage to encounter a few. 

However, the early mornings and late afternoons are prime times for those eager to spot and snap a selfie with the adorable Quokka. During these periods, quokkas are more likely to be foraging and exploring, the perfect opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. 

Note: Essentially, this means an overnight or longer stay is going to increase the likelihood of seeing them.

In conclusion, Rottnest Island truly exceeded my expectations every time, and I wouldn’t hesitate to visit again in the future. Although next time, I hope to stay longer, increase my knowledge, and explore other areas further.
