How to Organise your Day trip?

Since Rottnest Island (or Wadjemup) is located about 19 kilometres off the coast of Perth, transfers are available through three operators:

  • Rottnest Express
  • Rottnest Fast Ferry
  • and SeaLink Rottnest Island

➡  Find Day Trips HERE with GYG, Or HERE with Viator.

However, these depart from different areas like

  • Perth City,
  • North Fremantle,
  • Fremantle,
  • or Hillary’s Boat Harbour.

Ferry travel times vary, ranging from around 25 minutes from Fremantle, 45 minutes from Hillary’s Boat Harbour, and up to 90 minutes from Perth City.

When organising your trip, it’s important to note that prices differ among various ferry service providers. The cost primarily hinges on the departure point, travel date, time of year, the operator, and chosen package (including Bikes, Inc Lunch or Bus Tours).

On the journey over, there is plenty of time to sit back, relax, and watch the scenery slowly pass by as you head from the mainland to your holiday destination.

Ferry Departure Times?

While there may be mid-morning departure options, I think they limit your time on the Island, missing the opportunity to fully capture the beauty and marvels that await you.

Therefore, I recommend having the entire day at your disposal, providing the flexibility to set your own pace and absorb the surroundings fully.

Estimated or My Recommended Departure times:

  • 7:30 am – Leave Perth
  • 8:15 am – Arrive on the Island
  • 4:30pm – Leave the Island
  • 5:15 pm – Arrive Perth

How to get around the Island?

Push Bike

To experience the beauty, you’ve got to approach it the right way, and that means embracing the power of pedals! The bicycle reigns supreme as the most favoured mode of transportation on a Rottnest Island day trip.

With 11 kilometres of terrain and cars restricted, I found the humble pushbike stands out as the ideal means to explore the Island’s landscapes.

Note: These bikes can be hired as part of your day trip package deal with the ferry operator

Bus

Cycling isn’t always going to be your preferred way to explore! That’s why it offers a variety of alternatives for touring.

You can opt for the convenient hop-on/hop-off bus service. This operates with 19 stops across the island on a 30-minute schedule, providing a comfortable way to enjoy the sights.

The downside is a strict time schedule and waiting for the bus to come back around. So alternatively, consider an organised tour to maximise your visit and have expectations about what you’re seeing.

Note: Both are still a great choice and a reliable option for extended stays past a day trip.

12 Best Things to do!

The lovely Rottnest Island (or Rotto, as it’s known to the locals) is a decent size to explore, 11 kilometres wide and 5 kilometres long. The sandy Island is known for its beautiful clear waters and brilliant swimming locations.

While the Island is primarily a tourist destination, there are about 300 permanent residents, mainly in Thomson Bay and Kingstown settlements. However, it welcomes around 700,000 visitors each year.

But, below are some of the best things I found to do!.

Looking down the barrel of the old Cannon

1. Discover the Beaches

With so many beaches, deciding where to begin can be a delightful dilemma. Consider exploring:

  • Henrietta Rocks,
  • Parker Point,
  • Salmon Bay,
  • Mary Cove,
  • Little Armstrong Bay,
  • Little Parakeet Bay,
  • Pinky Beach,
  • and the Basin.

These are just a few examples, and you could find many smaller, hidden coves and bays while you get around. Each beach on the Island has its unique charm, making it a paradise for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts.

2. Snorkelling or Diving

There are hundreds of native and tropical fish species, a shipwreck, and 20 different types of coral. You might be lucky to find a turtle or two, colourful lobsters, or even giant stingrays

Can you believe I was just standing in knee-deep water on the shores when a stingray swam by?(pictured below) I have to admit it shocked me a little and scared my friend even more. But, an amazing experience to see it in its natural environment.

3. See a Quokka or two.

Quokkas are small marsupials, which can often look like tiny kangaroos. They inhabit the Island in large numbers, making it one of the best places to spot them.

Quokkas are incredibly friendly and do not shy away from humans. As such, they are very easy to photograph. This is why they are known worldwide as the happiest creatures and convenient for selfies.

Quokkas are found all over the Island, but I mainly found them in the more popular Settlement area. Although, other spots include:

  • The Basin,
  • Stark Bay headland,
  • the bike parking area near Porpoise Bay,
  • and Bickley Bay dunes.

Also, under the trees on Wadjemup Rd on the way to Wadjemup Lighthouse, Parker Point boardwalk, and Salmon Point.

4. Cycle around the Island

As mentioned above, you can design your day and get active while exploring the Island. The well-paved roads make cycling the optimal way to discover the Island’s beauty.

I recommend taking plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat that can be used with a helmet.

With its long stretches of coastline, secluded bays, and abundant wildlife, it’s hard not to be intrigued by this beautiful destination. It takes about 1.5 hours to ride around the Island, but with frequent stops for swimming and sightseeing, that time can easily stretch out much longer.

5. Museum

A visit to The Wadjemup Museum allows you to learn about the Island’s history. Its range of exhibits includes age-old artifacts, vintage postcards, artworks, and outdoor sculptures.

Conveniently, it’s open daily and located behind the Bakery and General Store

It shares the history of the lands, stories about the prison, art, aboriginal culture, and how the Island was used for quarantine during the pandemic. Some might like the whale bones, seaweed collages, and showcases from local artists.

6. See Both Lighthouse’s

The Island has two lighthouses – The Wadjemup Lighthouse and the Bathurst Lighthouse. Both were constructed in the 1800s and are a highlight point of interest for any visitor on the Island.

The Widjemup Lighthouse is the fourth tallest in Australia and offers fantastic views of Perth City. It sits proudly atop the highest point on the Island, stands 38 metres tall and was constructed in 1896. The Bathurst Lighthouse, located on the northern edge, stands 20 metres high.

7. Try a Segway Tours

Taking a Segway tour is the perfect way to have fun while learning all about the Island’s history. Segway’s are fun and easy to ride, as they allow you to explore the Island quickly and comfortably and are suitable for all ages.

You can take a guided or self-guided tour, depending on your preferences. If you take one of the guided tours, experienced staff will help you, filling you in on the Island’s fun facts and history.

8. Sky Diving

Experience an adrenaline-pumping adventure while taking in the stunning view of the Southwest from above with skydiving! From a bird’ s-eye view, you can see many more places, like secret beaches and hidden coves.

Embark on this exciting journey and feel your heart racing as you plummet toward the ground in a thrilling free fall before slowly gliding back down.

9. Seafood Cruise

A Seafood Cruise is a relaxed-paced experience that allows you to unwind on the open water and soak in the picturesque island views. All while indulging in the pleasure of delectable seafood.

I don’t know about you, but nothing beats a feed of cold, fresh prawns dipped in a cocktail sauce or Thousand Island dressing. Between that, and a nicely cooked salmon and a crisp salad.

10. Scenic Flight

A scenic flight over the Island offers a different perspective without the adrenaline rush of skydiving. Nestled in the comfort of your exclusive window seat, you’ll get an incredible view of the fantastic landscapes.

Catch up-close glimpses of the coastline, rugged cliffs, and pristine beaches as your skilled pilot takes you on a carefully devised flight path around the Island. You’ll surely be blown away by the adventure and learn a thing or two along the way.

Or, if you’re like me, I tend to get a bit snap-happy on these things!

11. Learn the History of the Island

The history of Rottnest Island is like taking a step back in time. The Aboriginal culture and stories, the wildlife, military insights, and the importance of Wadjemup, there is something unique to be learned around every corner.

The island abounds with wildlife, providing keen naturalists with the perfect opportunity to observe unique birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians up close! The indigenous presence on the Island is evident, as is its time as a military base.

12. Bakery

The iconic Bakery is a must-stop for tourists. I smelt the freshly baked goodness from metres away and couldn’t help myself indulging in a sausage roll. But once inside, I was greeted with attractions of sweet and savoury treats that made my mouth water, so it was hard to decide.

Every indulgence is created with fresh flavours and old-school favourites. From decadent doughnuts, crusty sourdoughs, delicious pies, and more. I’m sure they’ll have something to tantalise your taste buds.

What does Rottnest Stand for?

After its separation from Australia’s mainland, the Island remained uninhabited until the arrival of thirteen Dutch sailors at Bathurst Point on 19 March 1658. This marked the commencement of European exploration and settlement.

Six days later, Willem de Vlamingh explored the Island further and maintained its whimsical moniker. The Dutch explorer named the island and earned its early title as ‘t Eylandt ‘t Rottenest or “Rats’ Nest Island”. This is due to the explorer’s initial impression that quokkas resembled giant rats.

Despite the initial comparison to rats, Willem described Rottnest Island in his reports as a “paradise on earth.”
