The challenge for many visitors is figuring out how it all works. Get from Brisbane to Sunshine Coast using Public Transport?

For todays journey, you can obviously start from Brisbane Central Station or using the Airtrain from the Brisbane International or Domestic Airport.

If you don’t have time to read the entire post? Get the highlights here on how to Travel from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast using the cheap Public Transport system here:

  • Step 1 – Starting at the Brisbane Airport, use the Airtrain to Eagle Junction Station, or alternatively, use my cheaper hack with FREE Bus to Skygate/DFO and Public Bus to Toombul Train Station. If you’re starting in the CBD, get on platform for the Nambour Train at Central or Roma St Station.
  • Step 2 – Board the Nambour train travelling north, which will stop at Landsborough or Nambour, depending where you final point is on the Sunshine Coast.
  • Step 3Connect to a Public Transport Bus travelling to the Coastal Areas, or your desired location on the Sunshine Coast

If this has you intrigued, then please read on for more detailed information and how to use the GoCard/Smart ticketing system, Costs and navigating the Translink App.

However, If you need a visual of everything in this blog today, please click the picture below and watch my video on the whole process.

Step 1 – Starting from Brisbane Airport or Central Station!

If you’re starting at the Airport, only take about 10 minutes to navigate from the arrival lounges. Stroll along the walkway bridge and up the escalators, while you’re following the Airtrain Signs.

These will depart around every 30 minutes, and travel through to Brisbane City and eventually down the Gold coast.

escalator to the Brisbane Domestic Airtrain Platform into central Station

The Airtrain runs on a different (more expensive) pricing regime. But, you can still use your Go Card or Contactless credit card to pay for it.

Generally, traveling from the Airport to Brisbane Central Station, a single Adult Ticket will cost $22.30 for a one way journey. But, you can save money by purchasing this portion separately online, adding more adults, and with a return journey.

Alternatively, you can use cheap public services instead of the Airtrain! This will take a little longer, but certainly save you some cash.

In the end, If you’re Travelling to the Sunshine Coast, I suggest getting off at the Eagle Junction Station (instead of going all the way into Brisbane Central) and connecting to the Caboolture/Nambour train, which heads north.

Airtrain Public Transport from Brisbane Domestic Airport

From Brisbane Central Station!

If you’re starting at Brisbane Central Station, it’s just the one express service you’ll be catching. You need to Look for the TV schedule travelling North, and finding the one coloured in Green to Caboolture/Nambour.

Brisbane Public Transport Signs work on a colour system

You shouldn’t have to wait long for a train (within 30 minutes). But, always make sure you stand back from the yellow line for safety.

When the train stops, press the button in the middle of the doors to open (unless someone has already pressed it from the inside).

Then board the train.

Note: While the Sunshine Coast Hinterland public transport options are limited. If you’re planning to explore this area, please consider renting a car or joining a tour.

Step 2 – Brisbane to Nambour on the Train

It’s around 100 Kilometres or 60 miles in distance between Brisbane City and Nambour and it will take almost 2 hours to Get to one of the stations.

In comparison, travelling by car will take around 1 and a half hours, but could be longer depending on the time of day and heavy traffic.

However, there is about 10 stations around the Sunshine Coast and hinterland areas. But know every single ones of these Train station are about 20 kilometres from the coastal areas.

So, you will need to connect onto a bus to get to your final destination.

I have heard rumours of a light rail or Tram system being implemented, but that will be a few years away from now. However, I love how well it’s working on the Gold Coast and eager for it’s arrival.

Your Translink app will help you choose the best Train station to get off, but Landsborough and Nambour seem to be the most popular and more likely to have closer connections with the Buses.

Although, the Beerwah Train station is the best if your going to Australia Zoo. They have a free courtesy bus and it’s generally there to meet you.

Along the way you can enjoy a pleasurable journey with sites of Greater Brisbane and once you start getting past Caboolture, you’ll see the Hinterland areas,

If anything, in between the Beerburrum and Glass house Mountains Station you need to look out for the amazing site of Mount Tibrogargan.

You could also just sit back and read a book, listen to music or talk to the other passengers.

There will be crowds on the trains if you’re travelling with the Monday to Friday working traffic. But, weekends and school holidays will be pretty cruisy and you shouldn’t have any issues getting a seat.

More and more people (Including the school kids) will start to phase off as you go further north, travelling out of the city.

Since it is a longer journey, there is a bathroom on board and like most the trains in South East Queensland, they have free Wi-Fi and all air-conditioned.

There are also quite carriages. These are situated on the second and second last carriage of every service. Which means if you’re sitting in one of these, there is no talking loudly and chatting on your phone or playing music.

All the other carriages are to have noise kept to a minimum, but a little more leeway than the quiet carriages.

Step 3 – Connect from Train to Bus at Nambour

Nambour Station is a brilliant option for bus connections, and you’ll want to get off here for Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Coolum, Eumundi or Noosa Heads.

Landsborough is another good option for connections, which is closer if you want to get to Caloundra, Kings beach, Kawana and you could also do Mooloolaba.

I honestly find the Buses a little harder to Navigate, but the TransLink app will help you catch the right one.

Translink Bus Public Transport from Nambour on the Sunshine Coast

Firstly, The bus will display the Service number mentioned in your App, but you also need to look out for the direction.

We almost got on a bus that displayed the right number, but turns out, he was going the other way, on the same line. However, within 5 minutes, there was another going the way we wanted to go!

The Bus will be subjected to normal vehicle traffic and it’s more like a milk-run stopping all the time. They were comfortable enough, with Air-Conditioning and elevated seats towards the back.

I do find you have to take more notice of where you are! Plus you have to press the stop alert button, when you want the bus to let you off at the next available stop.

Pressing the Stop button on a Translink Bus

They could definitely benefit from installing TV displays, with the stops coming up. But, If you are new to the area, please just talk to the driver and tell him where you are going and they will generally stop there for you.

Honestly, the opportunities are endless, with where you need to go and you can simple type a location into the Translink app. It will even tell you how long between connections, and far you have to walk from your last stop.

Just remember to Tap and Off with each service and you’ll be fine!

Sit back and enjoy the scenes, and city streets – but it will be stopping every few minutes until you reach your destination.

It took us about 30 to 40 minutes to get to the coastal areas, but this will also depend on whether you have other connections.

How to use the Go Cards?

The Public Transport options in South East Queensland are through the Translink Network. This includes the Trains, Trams, Buses, and Ferry’s services that you can take you throughout Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

Any Translink service can be paid for using Go Card, or a paper ticket.

Sample Go Card for South East Queensland Public Transport

If you are travelling substantially on the network for your visit, then I definitely recommend the Go Card, as this ends up working out about 30% cheaper than a single paper ticket.

You can purchase A Go Card either online, at manned train stations, a local retailer like 7 elevens, or news agency’s that display the Go Card sign.

Or, you can get adult Go Card tickets from these big self-service fare machines, which display in a few different languages. As well as helping you top up your Go card with extra money, or checking your balance.

Although, just be careful when using the touch display on these machines. They aren’t always the best at selecting the option you intended. I often find a delay and you might have to press really hard for your fingers to be recognised.

As an alternative, you can manage your Go Card by:

  • Completing a single top up online.
  • registering an auto top up online (which is what I do being a local) ,
  • or you even going to the same retailers you buy the card.

And, don’t forget that Go Card balances are also displayed when you tap them on and off each service.

But, if you need a one-off paper ticket, you can purchase them at these same fare machines, as well as manned train stations.

About Contactless Smart Ticketing?

Using the Smart Ticketing System is no difference in Price than with the Adult Go Card. So, It can be a convenient option if you’re only using the Public Transport a limited number of times.

Essentially, the smart ticketing machines is using your Credit card, Visa Debit or even Contactless payment devices like your Mobile Phone and Smart Watches (See Picture below). These are being introduced across all the services, including Trains, Trams, Bus and Ferry

I see the smart ticketing machines at major stops, but they aren’t everywhere yet (but, could be when you arrive).

Others will show the Go Card only on the tapping display.  So, if you are travelling to a less popular station, then you might need a paper ticket or purchase the Go Card.

Since Smart ticketing is only suitable for adult fares, you will need a Go Card for Seniors, Children or other accepted Concession Card holders.

Smart Ticketing Machine displaying Credit Card Options on the Public Transport

Once you have either the Go Card or Credit Card, you just need to make sure you Tap On when you get on the service or enter the station. And Tap Off when you get to your destination.

That’s even if you’re connecting onto another service like Train to Bus, Bus to Tram, or Train to Ferry, you have to tap on and off each single one.

You’ll know it’s activated when the big tick shows up and your card balanced displayed. Tapping off will also show a big tick, plus how much this trip cost.

Failure to tap off your Go Card at the end of the journey will result in a fixed amount deducted from your balance. This is generally the highest fare travelling all zones.

Tapping on and off is required for any Public Transport in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast & Gold Coast

How much does the Public Transport cost?

The fare price are generally charged in zones. However, as of August 2024 they are trialling 50 Cent fares!

This is to help with the cost of living, across the entire network in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. These cheap fares may or may not be around for your visit. But prior to this, a single zone started at peak times with an Adult Price of $3.55 and up to $21.48 for 8 zones.

Obviously, this gets cheaper for off peak times and concession card holder.

Even if you’re connecting services (like the Train and Bus) in the one trip: The system knows whether to charge you or not based on the time difference between your last Tap off.

How to use Translink App?

If you’re trying to plan out your journeys, this can all be done through the Translink App. This is available on your phone, or you plan your journey prior on your desktop.

This uses all networks from point A to point B that you select including

  • The cost.
  • Walking distance to and from your location and destination.
  • the train platform number.
  • Service times.
  • and the service numbers.

This is your Go to App for any public transport around Southeast Queensland. It’s available on Google play and Apple Store and very handy to ensure you make your connections and know where you need to be.

It can even navigate from your actual location and walking distance to the nearest public transport stop

But just know that you will need Data or Wi-fi service to access it.
