Queenstown is located on the South Island and a mere 6 hours southwest of Christchurch. While flying into Christchurch might sometimes be cheaper, Queenstown does have its own international Airport and direct flights from many countries.
1. The Remarkables & Coronet Peak
The first thing you’ll notice when visiting Queenstown is the surrounding mountains. This includes both “The Remarkables” and “Coronets Peak.”
While they can be seen and admired all year round, their popularity spikes during the Winter, offering some of the best Skiing facilities.
➡ Find Queenstown Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
The Remarkables are the most prominent figure, and most Queenstown hotels will have mountain views from their hotel rooms. Additionally, areas like the Gondola Ride and Bob’s Peak will thrive on the sites and make them worth visiting.
I even participated in skiing lessons for my first time in the snow and hired some of the gear in town.

2. Scenic Flights or Heli-Hikes
What better way to see the sites and views of Queenstown than from the air.
I’ve been lucky enough to take two different flights on the south island of Zealand, and both were well worth the experience.
➡ See prices for Flights HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
Firstly was my scenic helicopter flight up on top of one of the flat areas of Coronet’s Peak. Obviously, this was a different area from the ski fields, but it also included a snow landing, How cool is that!
This is where we hopped out of the Helicopter, threw a few snowballs, made snow angels, and took in the atmosphere of fresh powered snow.

3. Bungy Jumping
Bungy jumping is a heart-pumping encounter of a lifetime, and no other city holds as many options for Bungy quite like Queenstown!
You can choose between several locations to Bungy off the historic Bobs Peak with a beautiful view of the lake, or the Kawarau Bridge at 43 metres (which is where I took the challenge).
The Nevis Bungy is said to be New Zealand’s highest Bungee at 134 metres, and it definitely needs some guts for that first jump off the platform. Therefore, choose a size suitable to your needs and become one of the ultimate free-falling thrill seekers.
Note: You can Bungy Jump & Zipline from the Kawarau Bridge

4. Queenstown Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens is one of the best FREE things to do in Queenstown and offers a beautiful, tranquil setting away from the touristy town.
It’s only a few minutes walk from the city centre, and you can spend as little or as long as you want there.
Admire the magnificent-looking trees, overlook Lake Wakatipu, or take a seat to watch the ducks swim around. The gardens include water features, a wide variety of New Zealand trees & plants, a rose garden, and several significant memorials.
Tip: I often use places like this to fill in excess time, like when you’re waiting for a flight.

5. Fergburger
It’s not normal for me to suggest going somewhere to eat!
While eating is something you must do, my blogging is more about things to do. That being said, I heard that Fergburger in Queenstown was somewhere I just had to try.
Why, you ask? Isn’t it just a Burger place?
Well, Yes, Fergburger serves the standard Burger and chips! (I had the chicken one) However, when you see the constant lineup of people out the door, then you know it’s just somewhere you have to try!
With that said, know they serve people rather quickly, so don’t let the lines and limited seating deter you. Or visit outside of the standard eating windows (like me at 930am), to get through the line quicker.

6. Shotover Jet
The Shotover Jet Boat Tour is one of Queenstown’s most popular and highly advertised action-adventure highlights. You get strapped into a powerful jet boat seat and guided through the stunning Shotover Canyon with high speeds and exhilaration.
➡ Book the Shotover Jet HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator
All of this is both fun and safe for the whole family, with experienced and highly trained drivers, you can relax and enjoy the ride without fear.
The experience involves 360-degree spins, the highest speeds over water as shallow as 10 centimetres, and coming SOOO close to the canyon walls. On the downside, there is a chance of getting wet, but raincoats are provided.
NOTE: If you believe the Shotover jet is out of your price range, know there are a few other jet boating options available in New Zealand (Including Dart River)! But after doing more than 10 jet boat rides around the world, this is one of my favourites.

Check out my Photo Gallery Sales Page for sample tourism images needed for websites, banners, magazines articles, Marketing and/or Advertisement’s.
7. Onsen Hot Pools
Are you looking for romantic things to do with your partner? Then check out the fantastic Onsen Hot Pools, which is tucked away in the forest just outside of Queenstown and overlooking the Shotover River.
Day or night, It’s the perfect getaway for couples and friends looking to spend some quality time together!
The best part about this place is its location surrounded by nature and tranquillity. I booked a night-time package with the room covered in tea light candles, but my next opportunity will definitely be during the day and seeing the views.
Tip- Book your spot here a few weeks in advance, as they are relatively busy and have limited hot tubs available.

8. Gondola Ride to Bobs Peak
The Gondola Ride to Bobs Peak and Skyline Queenstown is an absolute must-do when visiting this beautiful region in New Zealand. Not only will you take in some of the best views around, but it’s the steepest cable car lift in the Southern Hemisphere.
As soon as you step off the gondola, you can settle into a restaurant or bar with stunning panoramic vistas, listen to music from local artists, or indulge in some delicious food and a few drinks.
In addition, the destination itself offers plenty of activities and eateries to enjoy(along with the Luge mentioned below). So the fun doesn’t have to stop when you arrive at Bobs Peak.

9. Skyline Luge Ride
If you want thrills for the whole family without going overboard, then the Luge Ride is just for you.
However, I recommend purchasing your tickets before arriving, as you can score specials and combo deals that include other Queenstown activities like the Gondola.
Not only that, I suggest purchasing a MINIMUM of 5 rides as there are 2 lanes (Beginner and Advanced). As it will take at least 3 rides for you to get to know the Luge (speed and how it manoeuvres) and start having fun.
There is a chairlift that will take you back to the start zone, and you can do it over and over again (since once is never enough).

10. Milford Sound
Although Milford Sound is a few hours’ drive away, it can still be explored with a day trip from Queenstown. In fact, due to snowy weather and closed roads, sometimes the flights from Queenstown to Milford Sound are more convenient and may be your ONLY way in.
➡ Book Milford Sound tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
Once at Milford Sound, you board an unforgettable river cruise for a slow ride along a pristine calm lake with stunning waterfalls and mountain peaks. The winding ridges lull you into a peaceful trance as you drift through serene waters.

Alternatively, while it’s a long journey and if the weather is good, I recommend driving to Milford Sound and staying overnight in Te Anau. It’s a charming lakeside town and home to an incredible Glow Worm Cave experience , a magical boat ride and walk through a dark cave lit by glowing creatures.
Although, If you’re heading up the West Coast instead, don’t worry, you can also see glow worms for FREE near Fox Glacier, making both options worth exploring!

11. Minus 5 Ice Bar
Where else can you see 18 tonnes of ice architecture and experience extreme temperatures. Look no further than the MINUS 5º Ice Bar, which is open daily from 2pm to 9pm.
➡ Get your Ice bar tickets HERE with GYG
They will provide coats, shoes, and gloves so you can live like an Eskimo for 30 minutes.
During that time, you’ll marvel at the handmade ice sculptures and taste some delicious cocktails (Mocktails for the kids) while drinking from a glass made from ice. Not only that, but the Instagram-worthy photo shots are just waiting to be taken.

12. Arrowtown
Arrowtown (Aka. Ahuriri Conservation Park) is located just 20 minutes northeast of Queenstown and is a quaint and rustic destination.
However, for those looking for a unique experience, gold fossicking is available in the area where visitors can hunt for their own gold nuggets (Yep – I did this, pictured below).
This provides an exciting way to travel back in time and be part of the original gold rush that began years ago. Not only that, but this same river was used in the filming of “Lord of the Rings”.

13. Ifly Skydiving Centre
The Ifly Skydiving Centre is an experience you will always remember, with state-of-the-art wind tunnel technology, this is a sensation of skydiving without actually jumping out of a plane.
You can purchase ticket online and trained instructors ensure your safety and guide you through the experience.
So whether you are looking for a fun experience with friends or want to conquer a fear of heights, the Ifly experience will not disappoint.

14. TSS Earnslaw Cruise
The TSS Earnslaw is a river cruise that starts with a peaceful journey past Queenstown’s beautiful sights and ends with an incredible dinner onboard where you can take in some excellent nightly-light views overlooking the city.
➡ Book your TSS Earnslaw Cruise HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.
Enjoy an evening of peace and relaxation as you sail down the river, and learn about the steamboat. Plus, giving you time to relax, gather your thoughts, and appreciate the beauty of nature around you, all as the sun slowly sets in the distance.

15. Lord of the Rings Tours
Middle Earth comes to life with its Lord of the Rings Tours in Queenstown!
As a fan favourite, these tours excite movie lovers of all ages as they show off sites used during filming. Feel like an extra and walk through the movie locations, and snap an image remembering where it was in the film.
➡ Check prices for Lord of the Rings tours HERE with Viator
My tour took me to several spots like Skipper Canyon, and we were provided actual movie photos and how it was enhanced for the Trilogy.
However, even if you are not a “Lord of the Rings” fan, I thought it was a brilliant tour for sites and views of unbelievable locations, that other tours just don’t visit.

16. Winery Tours
New Zealand is famous for its winery tours, and Queenstown offers a truly idyllic getaway for all wine lovers.
Guests can sample plenty of local products while they wind their way through stunning rolling hills and lush vineyards.
➡ Find Winery Tours HERE with GYG or HERE with Viator.
Whether you’re a romantic couple or a group of friends looking for an adventure. You’ll get to sample fantastic New Zealand whites and reds as you draw inspiration from The Southern Alps backdrop and picturesque Lake Wakatipu.

17. Hiking
I think Queenstown is an outdoor lover’s paradise, and there are literally dozens of epic hikes to complete here. These range from more accessible routes for weekend wanderers, to hard-core climbs for those determined enough to summit Queenstown Hill (even Mountain Biking Routes).
One particularly captivating hike is the Tiki Trail from Queenstown to Bob’s Peak and then up Ben Lomond. Offering mesmerizing vistas at every turn and the eventual summit presents a stunning panorama of Queenstown.
Others include the Moke Lake Loop, Queenstown Hill Walkway, Mt. Crichton Loop Track and the Routeburn Track.

18. Hydro Attack Ride
What encounter is crossed between a fighter jet and a torpedo? It’s the Hydro Attack ride, of course, and your epic things to do would not be done, without including this adrenaline rush!
It funny, but the Hydro Attack ride looks like a Shark and is completely enclosed for river diving. It can skim across the Queenstown Lake at 80 Kilometres per hour and quickly dive under.
Next minute your air borne, pointing straight up and blasting out of the water. Even if you don’t complete it yourself, it’s really interesting to see how it moves from a distance.

19. Skycity Casino
Located near the heart of Queenstown, SkyCity Casino is the perfect place for gamers, gamblers, couple of drinks or even to have a meal!
So whether you’re a high roller or a once-in-a-while player, this casino is a lovely way to fill in time or venture someone different for a meal.
From classic table games like blackjack and roulette to new-age video gaming machines and poker tournaments that attract players from all around the world. Plus, after hitting the jackpot or enjoying a few rounds of your favourite game, you can head over to the bar and enjoy a cocktail or two.

20. Queenstown Mall
The Queenstown Mall is a shopaholic’s paradise, especially if you are looking for those last-minute winter supplies!
So whether you’re in the mood to shop ’til you drop, browse the windows, find local products, or grab those New Zealand souvenirs.
It has become well-known as a tourist hotspot over the years. However, it’s a great place to browse around and maybe pick up a few necessities or bargains. There’s sure to be something that catches your eye, and if not, the mall’s atmosphere will make your trip worth it.
Choices include:
- Country Road – Classic Aussie fashion
- Witchery – Stylish women’s clothing
- Glassons – Trendy and affordable fashion
- Just Jeans – Denim and casualwear
- Lululemon – Activewear and yoga apparel
- Merchant 1948 – Quality footwear and accessories
- Rodd & Gunn – Premium menswear
- Jamies Jewellers – Family-run, local jeweller
- Partridge Jewellers – Luxury watches and fine jewellery
- Artisan boutiques with Merino wool products, Local art and photography

21. Winnie’s Pizza
Again, I don’t usually highlight food-related activities in my travel content, but I thought Winnies Gourmet Pizza Bar in Queenstown truly deserves a mention. Tucked away in The Mall, this lively and welcoming spot delivers an experience that goes far beyond your average pizza joint.
From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was buzzing with energy. The staff were warm, attentive, and made you feel right at home. The menu is packed with unique and creative pizza combinations, and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious.
But what really makes Winnies stand out is its iconic opening roof. Yes, the entire roof lifts up! On sunny days or during special moments, it opens to let in fresh alpine air and natural light, creating an unforgettable dining atmosphere. It’s one of those quirky Queenstown experiences that’s unexpectedly awesome.

Where to Stay?
Queenstown has many different accommodation options, so knowing the best place to set up camp can take a lot of work.
I generally like to stay central near the city, so I’m within walking distance away from tours and things to do. For me, my last couple of visits was staying at the Lomond Lodge, Rydges Lakeside or QT Queenstown.
➡ Check prices for Queenstown hotels HERE with Booking.com
Whereas if you had your own car, more options would open up further out of the city and, therefore, cheaper.
Whether you’re hoping for something backpacker style or have your heart set on staying in luxury, you’ll find something suitable to your needs. Plus, many rooms have stunning views of “The Remarkables” (snow-top mountains).

How to get around?
For those who want to see more and utilize their time more efficiently, I think car hire is by far the more convenient option. These can be hired direct from the Airport in Queenstown or Christchurch, and I have found the prices reasonable.
➡Find your favourite brand & compare prices for your Rental Car HERE
Alternatively, exploring Queenstown can be easy with the public bus service that’s available throughout the city. Although it will limit you to their service route, so I would make sure you look at that before choosing this option.

Best time of year to visit?
Queenstown is a four-season destination, so any time of year is the best time to visit!
However, consider what you want to do first and base your time of year around that.
In the warmer months (December to February), you can explore its beaches and take any number of adventure activities, from skydiving to jet-boating and biking through its stunning landscape.
For winter lovers, it’s also an incredible destination from June to September, and ski fields are within close proximity for all levels of skiing!

FAQ’s – Common Questions?
Is Queenstown Safe?
Queenstown is one of the most spectacular places in the world, and yes, it’s also very safe for a tourist. However, it’s true that the town attracts tourists from all over and can be quite lively all year round.
As a result, there’s little need to worry about crime or safety, and both locals and visitors can feel secure exploring this stunning landscape.

Although, any city always has general safety concerns, especially one you need to become more familiar with. Common sense should be followed and limit putting yourself in situations without the most up-to-date information.
That being said, after my many visits to Queenstown. I felt very comfortable walking around the central city area at night, and locals were friendly when asking for help or directions.

Are there UBERs?
Yes, yes, yes! You can absolutely find an UBER in Queenstown, and it could be more available than taxis.
So keep your options open for getting around town, and ensure you have the Android, or Apple APP downloaded before you arrive.

Are you Road tripping the South Island?
Exploring the MANY attractions on the South Island of New Zealand is a road trip like no other. It’s packed full of alpine landscapes, turquoise lakes, rainforests, and natural wonders.
