Is the Gold Coast Part of Brisbane, in Queensland?
If you’ve started planning a trip to Queensland, you might be wondering: is the Gold Coast part of Brisbane? It’s a question that comes up often, especially for first-time visitors trying to piece together their itinerary. On a map, the two look close, but are they actually the same place?
It can get confusing when airline routes, tour operators, or even locals casually mention “Brisbane and the Gold Coast” in the same breath. That’s why understanding the distinction before you book accommodation or transport is so important.
Having 25 Years with living and travelling between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, I’ll break it all down for you in this post. I’ll explain the differences, how far apart they are, and the best ways to travel between them. By the end, you’ll know exactly how to plan your trip without any confusion.

Is the Gold Coast Part of Brisbane, in Queensland?
Officially, the Gold Coast is NOT part of Brisbane and shouldn’t be mistaken as one city. Even though, when driving from one to the other, it actually doesn’t feel like you’ve entered a new city.
In fact, Brisbane is actually about 1 hour’s drive away from the Gold Coast. It’s hard to believe that two cities so close to each other can be so different, but the Coast has its own unique flair.

Surprisingly, Brisbane has a unique setup when it comes to governing bodies. While Brisbane City Council LGA is the primary governing body, there are a few other LGAs (Local Government Areas) in the area, like Logan City, Ipswich, Redlands, and Moreton Bay.

While this may seem like a lot to keep track of, it actually ensures that each area in Brisbane is receiving tailored attention and representation. Also, to avoid getting confused, some suburbs and Local Government Areas share borders, which can give the illusion of merging.

Which is Better to Visit?
So, you’re planning a holiday, and you’re looking to compare Brisbane vs. Gold Coast? Well, It really depends on what type of experience you’re after!
If you’re keen on soaking up the sun and catching some waves, then the stunning Gold Coast is the perfect choice. With incredible beachfront accommodation options, you can relax in style and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of the city’s high rises.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more upbeat, cosmopolitan vibe, Brisbane offers a wealth of activities to suit all tastes. From exploring the stunning botanical gardens and cultural additions to taking a look at the South Bank precinct attractions.

How far is Brisbane from the Gold Coast?
The Gold Coast is an estimated 70 Kilometres (or 1 Hour) away from Brisbane. Whether you’re starting from the heart of Brisbane or from its outskirts, the drive will generally take you down the M1 Pacific Motorway.
This is the same as the A1 Highway, which runs a circle around the entire country.
You’ll see exits from the highway nearly every couple of kilometres, and these exits are all numbered with suburb names to help with navigation. I guess this is where the confusion lies when it doesn’t feel like leaving one city to get to the next.

Can you stay one city and visit the other?
Absolutely, Yes, It is possible to stay in Brisbane and spend a day on the coast. This way, you can take advantage of the city life and also explore the sandy shores, many thrilling theme parks available, and all the other exciting activities this tourist mecca offers.

Size & Which is Better for tourists?
Which is Bigger?
Brisbane is the capital city of the sunny Queensland state and has the biggest population, with 2.5 million. But this also includes Greater Brisbane area localities with over 15,000 square kilometres in size. Not only that, but it’s the third largest city in Australia, coming behind Sydney and Melbourne.
As for the Gold Coast, it has a population of 730 thousand and roughly 1400 square kilometres. However, It’s the sixth-largest city in Australia and the largest non-capital city in the country.

Which is better for Tourists?
If you ask me, then, I think the Gold Coast is more worthwhile to first-time tourists and set up with a lot more activities to choose from. However, for the past 20 years, I’ve had the pleasure of calling Brisbane home, so my vote could be swayed when considering being a tourist in my home city.

Although, I must say that I’ve ventured down to the Gold Coast countless times, and there’s just something about the place that keeps luring me in. I think it’s the undeniable holiday vibe that seems to permeate the air. It could be the beach or waking up to a sunrise over the ocean.

Public Transport & Commuting
What’s the Public Transport Like?
Whether you’re a local or a tourist, navigating public transport in Brisbane can be a bit of a challenge. That’s why I decided to make a YouTube video sharing my tips and tricks on how to get around the city.
In my video, I cover everything from the different types of public transport available to how to buy a ticket and plan your route using the handy Translink app. I wanted to make getting around Brisbane as easy as possible for everyone.

As for the Gold Coast, I’ve often driven there to get around, but the Public system is growing and looking way better than ten years ago. Ultimately, introducing a ferry and Tram service was brilliant and helped to get around to the more popular suburbs.
Conveniently, these two cities both use the same public transport system, making it a breeze to navigate your way around. The GoCard system acts just like a credit card, allowing you to tap on and off at each location you visit.

Do People Commute between the Two City’s
Living on the Gold Coast but working in Brisbane can be a great choice for those who want to enjoy the coastal lifestyle while still having access to city amenities. There was one place I worked at in Brisbane City, and I felt like over half the people lived on the Gold Coast.
So, it can be done!

However, it’s important to be prepared for the traffic that comes with the commute. It’s not uncommon for driving to take anywhere between 1 to 3 hours in your car. Public transport From Brisbane to the Goldy is an alternative option and really improved over the years with the introduction of the Tram.
From there, you’ll need to consider the tram or bus service to get you to your final destination. While the commute may seem daunting, it’s worth considering all your options to find the best solution for you.

Which is better to live & Climate for each?
Which one is better to live in?
I have a saying that might resonate with you – “I don’t holiday where I live, and I don’t live where I holiday.” This is why I live in Brisbane and will holiday on the Gold Coast.
With that said, I think overall, Brisbane has greater job opportunities and more affordable housing to base yourself in (especially in the suburbs).
But once again, it comes down to your lifestyle and what you can afford.

Do you prefer fast-paced city living or a more relaxed beachside vibe? Are you on a tight budget, or can you afford to splash out on a fancy apartment? For me, living in Brisbane makes the most sense, and I doubt you’ll ever see me living on the Gold Coast.
However, I can definitely see the appeal of the Gold Coast for those who want to be right by the ocean and don’t mind spending a little extra. It’s also great if you’re looking for a job in the hospitality or tourism industry.

What is the Weather or Climate like?
I might be biased, but I just love the weather and climate in South East Queensland, which is probably why I’ve spent so long living here. It’s the middle area of Australia, which means we don’t get the chilling southern winters nor the sweltering summer heat in the North.

Call it my Goldilocks reference – “Not too hot, not too cold – it’s just right!”. But it also includes both Brisbane and The Gold Coast, and the two have minimal differences in weather.
But it’s not to say that the area is the same temperature all year round, and we do get seasonal changes and climate shifts. During the winter, from June to August, I will have to wear layers and longer pants. Alternatively, from December to February in the summer, I will look for places to swim and live in air-conditioning.

With an average winter temperature of 14°C, you’ll have no problem staying warm while exploring all the region offers. The sub-tropical climate also means that you can enjoy mild temperatures in the autumn and spring (around 20°C) and comfortably warm weather in the summer (around 24°C).
Of course, with great weather comes a bit of rain. But even the rain here is unique, with most of it falling in the summer and autumn months (December to April). It’s also influenced by various factors, from local topography to broader weather patterns like the El Niño-Southern Oscillation.

Wrap Up!
I guess overall, I’ve made it clear that the Gold Coast is not Part of Brisbane, but they are both still worth a visit for different reasons. Whether you’re interested in a day trip or a full vacation, you can swap between the two or base yourself at one and visit the other.
Follow my other Gold Coast blogs for updated articles on new spots around town. Since I live in South East Queensland, I’m always adding to it when I see new activities or things to do come up.
