Review: Oahu/Honolulu Helicopter Flight Tour! Worth it or Not?
If you’re heading to Hawaii and considering a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, an Oahu helicopter tour is probably on your radar. Flying above the island’s valleys and world-famous beaches sounds like the ultimate way to experience paradise, but the big question is: is it really worth it?
For first-timers, the price tag and nerves about flying in a helicopter can be real sticking points. Add in the sheer number of tour companies and different flight options, and it can feel overwhelming to know which one to choose and whether the experience will actually live up to the hype.
Having taken an Oahu helicopter tour from Honolulu myself, I can share exactly what to expect, from the views you’ll see and the flight itself, to the pros, cons, and whether it justifies the cost. In this review, I’ll help you decide if a helicopter tour is the right choice for your Hawaii itinerary.

Was my Honolulu Helicopter Flight tour Worth It?
Overall, our Oahu helicopter tour was, in the simplest term – Unbelievable! Every minute of the flight provided unique and stunning views. This included the crystal blue waters, Pearl Harbour, Diamond Head, Honolulu’s city skyline, and the bushland covering the mountains.
I don’t think there’s a better way to see so much in a little amount of time!
But, What made it even better? Having to choose between the doors on or off for our flight! Of course, we decided the “Doors off” was ideal with unobstructed and unrestricted views. Plus, it was a chance to really soak everything in and capture the best photos.
It was a Bucket List item to fulfil and gave us memories and amazing photos we will cherish forever. But, here is a quick list of Pros and Cons to help you decide if it’s for you:

Review & What to Expect On the Tour?
Which flight did we choose?
For the love of old T.V. shows, we ended up choosing a replica “Magnum P.I.” Helicopter for our flight tour. Of course, being able to remove the doors was also a factor, and having a window seat.

There are heaps of different helicopter tours available on the mainland, and since everyone is different, you’ll have your own requirements for the type of Hawaii Helicopter tours you want. Just do your research and find the one that suits you!
Do you get weighed?
Absolutely, Yes! Before embarking on a flight, it helps them to ensure that the weight is evenly distributed inside the cabin. This is so that everyone has an enjoyable and safe flight.
Where did we fly to?
Our exact Hawaiian chopper flight took us over the main areas of Honolulu, including the city skyline & resorts, the marina, and Waikiki Beach. They took particular attention flying over the magnificent volcanic crater, and you could see where people were walking up to Diamond Heads Summit.
Additionally, you could see the beaches with waves rolling in and the hundreds of surfers trying to catch their daily breaks. We also covered areas over North Shore, Jurassic Park filming locations, and The Pearl Harbour Monuments.
How long did it take?
We were picked up at our Waikiki hotel, driven to the airport, and had a flight time of 60 minutes. Overall, with the check-in, safety briefing, and time in the air, it took about two and a half hours.

There are other options you can choose from based on how much time you have available and your budget. This includes anything from 20 minutes to a few hours. If you have a particular goal in mind for your flight, then just do your research and choose the best option for you.
Do you need a Window Seat?
For me, an essential part of any helicopter flight is having a smaller, four-seater Helicopter( 3 seats plus the pilot) for the ride. This means for the 2 seats I’m purchasing, you are guaranteed a window seat.
There is nothing worse than trying to take photos from a Helicopter while leaning over another passenger, even if they are travelling with you. It’s because of this, I feel like middle seats need to be cheaper for the downgraded experience.
In fact, when booking any flight, If I’m not guaranteed a window seat, then I simply don’t book. Again, just a personal choice, but after having one experience sitting in the middle, I won’t do it again!
On this occasion in Honolulu, Matt and I were placed in the back seats of a four-seater Helicopter, and we both had window seats – A big plus for us!.
Is sitting in the Front Seat important?
Getting the front seat next to the pilot is the prime seat for any ride in the chopper and has the most unrestricted view. So, if you manage to snag this one, you’re doing very well, but not an absolute must!
Most helicopter flights are seated according to weight and balance. This means the pilot will weigh everyone on the flight and distribute the weight accordingly. It’s not an exact science, but I have found the lightest person tends to be in the front.
Deciding between Doors ON or Off?
Having the Doors OFF on a helicopter flight is something that you won’t be able to do everywhere. Specific areas will have rules and regulations for this option to be available. Additionally, this can be dependent on the other passengers your flight has.
But, essentially – I find having the “Doors OFF” makes for better photos with less glare and better composition.
One downside to the doors off is the wind, which can get extremely blowy and cold, even in Hawaii. We completed our Hawaiian Chopper ride in April at an average of 25 degrees Celsius – and it was still chilly.
If you have ever taken photos through the windows before, you will find the sun, and your camera lens reflects off the glass, and most of your photos will have a cloudy flare. If you have no choice, it’s best to take a flat lens and push it as close to the glass window as possible. It will stop the reflection from happening.
Having the “Doors OFF” will have its own requirements for safety. For example, wearing closed-in shoes, strong hair ties for longer hair, and wearing warmer clothes. Additionally, securing belonging like cameras with wrist or neck straps. This means tablets, iPads, and selfie sticks that protrude from the helicopter’s cabin are not commonly allowed.
What do you wear?
The best kind of clothing for a flight is snug and lightweight! Make sure no extra fabric from baggy clothes will flap around and make a nuisance for you or the other passengers. Hats, scarves, or hankies should be left at home too, and any loose items in your pockets could disrupt.
Most of this is discussed in the safety briefing and placed in a locker before the flight.
On the other hand, there’s no better way to make the most of your helicopter tour than by wearing dark clothing. Dark colours minimize the glare on the helicopter’s windows, allowing you to enjoy unspoiled views of your destination.
How much Did the Tour Cost?
Expect the cost range for a helicopter tour around Oahu from anywhere between $300US to $600US. This obviously revolves around the flight time, distance travelled, and areas you fly over.
Time of day could also be a factor, especially when you’re after a sunset helicopter tour. Additionally, private tours will also increase the cost when fewer seats are filled.

Overall, Helicopter Tours are considered a bucket list or large ticket item for anyone. But, I believe it’s worthwhile in some regions of the world and recognize it as a small price to pay for such a memorable adventure.
Best Time of day for the Flight?
Generally, I would recommend a helicopter flight sometime between 10am and 2pm. With the sun high above you, this reduces the risk of having your view blocked by sun glare on the windows.
On the other hand, this really depends on the flight path, which way you’re facing, and the subject of viewing. Ultimately, each location will be different and honestly depends on what time is convenient for you. Although, If you manage to organise a sunset or sunrise Helicopter Tour, this is an experience on its own.

Are the Flights Safe?
Helicopter tours are a great way to see your destination in a unique and special way. But, still, the question of safety certainly comes up a lot!
You can rest assured that, Yes, the flights are safe! As long as you go with a reputable provider who keeps their helicopters well maintained and makes sure their pilots are highly capable, you’re sure to have an enjoyable and safe experience on your tour.
Not only that, but all tours include a safety briefing which is completed before flying. Most consist of watching a short video or someone manually telling you the dos and don’ts. This typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes, and then you’re ready to ride.
Some countries require you to wear a life jacket when flying over water. These are smaller than a boating Life jacket and consist of a small pouch in the front tied with a belt around you.
What should you bring on your flight?
Before you take off, be sure to pack the essentials for your journey!
- Clothing layers are important to always have on hand as the temperature in the air can be drastically different than on land.
- Definitely remember a camera so that you can capture incredible shots and make lifelong memories.
- Make sure to wear sturdy shoes that can handle a bit of rough terrain if your tour includes any sights seen at ground level.
- And bring plenty of water!
Can you get Air sick?
If you’re someone who gets a bit motion sick when traveling, it could be something to consider when getting into a helicopter. The varying speeds, bumps, and turns could cause some nausea if you’re prone to motion sickness.
Therefore, It can be handy to take some form of medication or other precaution may be wise before taking off.
I’m more prone to boat sickness than flight sickness. But Ginger drinks are a great option, and purchasing over-the-counter medications from the chemist should be fine.
Why do you wear headphones?
Wearing headphones allows you to communicate with your fellow passengers and the pilot. Plus, the tour might contain commentary and provide local history and information on the sites you see.
Another reason is that it allows you to block out the noise from the engine and other outside noises (especially with the Doors Off). While making it easier to talk without having to speak any louder than you would have to normally.
What is the Turbulence Like?
Of course, it depends on the weather, but if you’re headed out for your tour on a windy day, you may experience some bumps and drops. But after roughly 10 different helicopter flights I’ve taken, I find the turbulence is basically non-existent.
The rotor blades smooths out most of these bumps before reaching the passenger compartment.
Is a helicopter tour a Good First Date?
If you’re looking for a first date idea, then, Yes, a Helicopter Tour can often be a great idea to surprise your other half. After all, not only is it a romantic and unique tour you get to share together, but the views, especially at night, can often make quite the impression!
Can they cancel in the rain?
Rain, as such, wouldn’t cancel a tour unless it was really stormy weather.
With that said, I’m not sure it would be an enjoyable flight and especially photo’s, during a time like this. I often book flights last minute, when I know what the weather is.
However, wind will affect the flying time and fuel needed, not to mention the safety of the guests. Therefore, some bad weather, especially wind, and lightning, will postpone a tour. It could also control where you fly, obviously in the direction away from the storm.
Where to Stay?
Plenty of great options exist if you’re looking for the perfect place to stay in Honolulu. I was researching for ages to find a hotel by the beach in Waikiki, so I could get up close and personal with golden-white sand and blue ocean waters.

If you’re on a budget, then you can choose a resort nestled further away from the beach and something more secluded and private. But still with plenty of amenities that will make your stay luxurious and enjoyable.
