My Review: Is the Jungle Zipline Worth It?

Overall, I thought the Jungle Zipline was worth it as a half-day excursion, leaving plenty of time in the afternoon to relax back at your hotel or explore Port Vila further. Personally, I loved the balance of thrills, nature, the rainforest, and catching glimpses of the ocean while on the Skybridge.

While I usually prefer cultural and unique experiences when visiting a country for the first time, I really enjoyed the chance to get to know the staff, who were fun, welcoming, and loved to share a laugh along the way.

Would I do it again? Yes, I’d happily return, given the opportunity. The combination of friendly guides, incredible views, and that rush of adrenaline makes it an adventure worth repeating. Even if it isn’t typically the kind of activity I would prioritise on a first-time visit.

On the other hand, its perhaps not the best on a rainy day. Zipping in the wet is possible under certain conditions and I’ve done it in Fiji, but it’s less ideal.

What to Expect

Hotel Pickup

On our visit, we were staying at the Breaka’s Beach Resort. While it was an out-of-the-way location, the guide showed up on time (even early) to collect us in an “open style” tray-back dual-cab Land Cruiser.

The Hotel Pickups were particularly handy given that, after the earthquake, the access road was restricted to staff vehicles only. I also think we got lucky with the transfers, as the road had only just reopened (people were walking the last 200 metres), but the 4WD ride up was rough and steep in sections.

I have to say that riding in the “open back area” of the vehicle was a little uncomfortable over the potholes through town, so you might want to hold on tight if sitting there.

Before too long, you arrive at the Ziplining centre!

Gearing up

I think safety is a big priority, and everyone is fitted with a continuous safety harness. The guides are both professional and light-hearted, making the experience fun and reassuring.

Ziplining fun

Honestly, the Jungle Zipline is more than just an adrenaline rush, it’s a full adventure set in the heart of Efate’s lush rainforest. The course spans six ziplines stretching over 2.2 km, weaving you through the treetops, soaring across deep canyons, and opening up to surreal views of Mele Bay and the South Pacific Ocean.

I felt the staff were genuinely friendly, cracking jokes along the way, but also very thorough in explaining each step of the process. All this made us feel completely at ease!

The highlight for many is the sheer mix of thrills and scenery, one moment you’re flying through the jungle canopy, the next you’re gazing out at turquoise waters.

The Skybridge

However, one of the standout features is the Skybridge, a 120-metre suspension bridge that hangs around 65 metres above the canyon floor.

The Skybridge essentially ends the tour! You complete the last Zipline passing by the bridge and then come back to walk on it. This is why the normal Zipline ticket cost “includes” the Skybridge, or why you can do the Skybridge section only, on its own.

At the Skybridge, you can slow down, soak up panoramic views, and even pause for photos. On our tour, we lingered around for nearly 20 minutes, which made the experience feel relaxed rather than rushed.

We even stayed long enough to watch someone in our group take on the optional Giant Canyon Swing, a heart-pounding 70-metre free-fall drop that’s not for the faint-hearted. For those who prefer something different, there’s also the quirky “Chair in the Air”, a suspended seat with a view, perfect for taking it all in at your own pace.

Drop Off

On the way home, we rode inside the Dual Cab, and I have to admit, it was a much smoother ride. Until we got a flat tyre going through town and Matt helped the guide change it.

Conveniently, the drive will either drop you back at your hotel of choice, or somewhere else in the Port Vila CBD. There were a few group members who got dropped off at the Shopping centre or a restaurant for lunch.

Where is the Jungle Zipline Located?

The Jungle Zipline is located at Mele Bay on Efate Island, just a short 25-minute drive from Port Vila. The site sits along Devils Point Road, a scenic stretch that runs past Island Magic Resort and down to the lush rainforest that frames the adventure park.

Map of Port Vila to Jungle Zipline

It’s worth noting that since the recent earthquake, the access roads in and out of the Zipline are now restricted for staff use only, which means a self-drive option is not practical (at the moment).

Fortunately, the tours include free transfers & hotel pickup from Port Vila, making it simple and stress-free to organise your visit. Whether you’re staying in town or arriving on a cruise ship, getting to the Jungle Zipline is easy and convenient so that you can focus on the fun rather than the logistics.

How to Get there

There are a couple of ways to reach the Jungle Zipline, depending on whether you’re staying in Port Vila or visiting on a cruise. This includes:

Overall view of the Skybridge in Port Vila Vanuatu

1. Join a Guided Tour (From Hotel or Cruise Terminal)

We found the simplest option to book a half-day excursion on the Jungle Zipline that includes return transfers. These tours often bundle in extra activities such as the Skybridge, the giant swing, or a garden walk, making it a great value experience.

➡  Find Zipline Tours HERE with Viator, or HERE with GYG

This is the same if you’re arriving by cruise ship, where it’s available as an organised shore excursion. Plus, transfers are scheduled to align with your ship’s timetable, giving you peace of mind.

Jungle Zipline seating and Picnic Area

Pre-booking is highly recommended for better flexibility and to lock in value. But, just note that if you book on the cruise, this will cost more than booking independently.

To be honest, there were two guests on our tour who only brought the Canyon swing when they arrived, so that can be an option too.

Expect a short 25-minute 4WD ride (up to an hour with other Hotel Pickups) up the mountain, followed by a safety briefing and harnessing before the adventure begins.

2. Self-Drive / Either Private Driver or Car Rental

Due to road hazards after the earthquake, this option isn’t available right now, but after the roads are in a better condition, they might go back to a self-drive choice.

Therefore, booking private drivers or hiring your own car will be for those who prefer more independence or planning for other activities on the same day.

The drive is scenic, but the road conditions can be rough after rain, so take care. Clear signage makes it straightforward to find the site, though most visitors find it easier to join the included tour transfers.

Best Time to visit?

The Jungle Zipline is a popular attraction in Port Vila, especially on cruise ship days and during peak holiday seasons. It’s best to book early to secure your preferred time slot.

Personally, I would avoid Cruise ship days if you can, but they will limit the numbers on each tours. Otherwise, morning slots would be better while some vacationers are still sleeping.

You’ll also enjoy clearer views of Mele Bay and the surrounding rainforest when the light is softer.

Photography Spots!

Some of the best photo opportunities include standing at the centre of the 120 m Skybridge, where you can see both the canyon below and the ocean beyond.

Action shots of your group zipping across the ravines are also a must (video is better for this), and don’t miss the panoramic views of Mele Bay from the higher platforms.

How long is the tour!

Allow 3–4 hours for the full Jungle Zipline and Skybridge experience, which includes safety briefings, gearing up, and the zipline course. If you add on extras such as the Giant Canyon Swing or a leisurely garden walk, you can easily turn it into a half-day adventure.
