If you’re planning a visit to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, you might be searching for a natural swimming spot that’s both beautiful and easy to access. That’s where Gardners Falls near Maleny comes in, a local favourite that combines a short walk, and a refreshing waterfall.

For first-time visitors, it can be tricky to know what to expect. Can you actually swim at the falls? How hard is the walking track? Where do you park? These are common questions, especially if you’re trying to decide if it’s worth adding to your itinerary.

As someone who loves chasing waterfalls around the Sunshine Coast, I’ve put together this complete guide to Gardners Falls. This post covers everything you need to know before you go.

How to Get to Gardners Falls near Maleny

Gardners Falls is tucked away in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland (Please see map here), just 30 minutes inland from the coastal strip and only a 7-minute drive from the charming town of Maleny. It’s a convenient stop if you’re already exploring nearby attractions like Montville, Kondalilla Falls, or Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

To get there, simply enter “Obi Lane South” or “Spicers Tamarind Retreat” into your GPS, then follow the road all the way to the end until you reach the dedicated parking area.

The route is fully sealed, so you won’t need a 4WD, any standard two-wheel drive vehicle will do. Driving your own car or hiring one for the day is by far the easiest option, as it gives you the flexibility to combine Gardners Falls with other scenic stops in the Hinterland.

It’s important to note that there is no regular public transport to Gardners Falls. However, in peak summer months, a few small group tour operators occasionally include the falls on their itineraries alongside other popular stops such as Kondalilla Falls.

Still, self-driving remains the most reliable way to visit and enjoy this hidden gem at your own pace.

Is there car parking?

Yes, There is Car parking, but please lower your expectations in snagging one of the spots. In reality, there are about 10 to 15 parks here, and every time I’ve visited, they have been full.

I’m surprised, for such a popular spot for swimming, this would have to be one of the most inconvenient places to park your car.

At busy times, cars are lined up along Obi South Lane, making it very inconvenient to drive in there. It’s a very small area, so if you can’t find a park, it’s generally a three-point turn to try and get out while others are still lined up behind you.

My best advice is to try everything possible to visit out of busy times. This means going early in the morning or late afternoon, during the week, and not on long weekends or school holidays.

➡  Find Hinterland Tours HERE with GYG, or HERE with Viator.

Your alternative to this would be parking along Obi South Lane and walking to the car park. Know that this walking time will be added to the top of the actual hike mentioned below.

Tip – The only time I’ve got a Car park is by driving in by 8 am in the morning. Obviously, this would depend on the time of year, but use it as a guide.

At the Car park, there is an environmental toilet and one or two picnic benches (uncovered).

Officially there is no facilities at the falls or the waterholes themselves, and you’ll need to bring a picnic rug or something to sit on. There are grassed areas around there and some rocks you could give a go.

How long is the walk?

The great news is the walk is only a few hundred metres (600 return or 10 minutes) or maybe a little extra to get to different parts of the waterhole. Along the walk, you should keep in mind that this is a shallow creek bed that cascades along the way.

This means the most you’ll be doing is sitting in the water as it rushes by. When you finally reach the waterhole, you’ll arrive at a 3-metre waterfall with a relatively deep swimming hole at the end.

There will often be kids jumping for the higher rock edges, or using the rope swing to bomb dive into the swimming hole. Although, due to unknown obstructions and changes in creek conditions, I would never attempt this for safety reasons.

Apart from that, It’s a brilliant little waterhole for a pool noodle or a donut floaty. Not only that, it’s effortless to swim up to the waterfall and give your head a natural massage.

Is it a difficult track to walk?

It’s class as Grade 1, and no effort to walk the flat, dirt track. And being only 300 metres you’ll be at the end in five minutes. However, you should look out for wildlife and stay alert, as I did see a snake slithering across the track on one of my visits.

Thongs or flip-flops will be acceptable to wear, especially if you’re swimming. Although, some might prefer closed-in shoes for comfort or protection.

The short walk is very tranquil, with the sounds of the waters rushing down the creek and the birds echoing through the rainforest. You’ll actually feel like you’re in a small canyon with the stream running through the middle and large trees and palms on the edges.

Can you swim?

Absolutely, Yes, you can swim, and so many people take advantage of this in the summer. Kids would need to be supervised, and babies are probably better in the areas along the creek bed where you’re just sitting in the water.

Surprisingly, Gardeners Falls is just one of the brilliant waterfalls on the Sunshine Coast and I have more mentioned below!

Safety Tips and Tricks

You’re visiting a wild swimming location with limited service. Therefore, you always need to take care and respect your surroundings. Here are just a few points to consider:

  • Rope swings are available and used at your own risk.
  • Only wear thongs on the walking track if they are comfortable. Closed-in shoes on walking tracks are always safer.
  • First Aid Kit might be handy in the car.
  • Take plenty of water, a few snacks, and wear sunscreen.
  • Always keep children within viewing distance.
  • Never via off-the-formed tracks.
  • Be aware of wildlife and stay away from dangerous animals. I have spotted snakes on this path.
  • Leave only footprints and take only photos. Take all rubbish with you.
  • Don’t destroy the natural environment.
  • Know your own limits.
  • Don’t swim alone, and don’t put yourself or others at risk
  • Always read and heed on-site information and signs
